Señorita 89 - BBC iPlayer and BBC 2 saturdays - Mexican noir?

I must have taped this as I usually watched whichever "noir" series the BBC fills this spot with so wasn't really sure what it was.

Set in 1989 on the surface it is about a beauty pageant, but takes a look at what is going on behind the scenes and the pressures on the contestants.

And then one of them dies.

Also has a young female academic who is there to provide culture to the contestants, but she really wants to tell them they can be more than their bodies. But are they in fact making the best (material) choice given their impoverished back grounds?

Please note: some scenes of sexual violence. Not quite the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo but just a warning.

I wonder what anyone else makes of it. I feel asleep as I started watching late so cant really judge!

We watched it last night - i think it will be quite good. Looks like the whole thing is a cover up for prostitution - not really a surprise!

Title should have said BBC 4 which has been the noir spot on saturdays for some time now.

Yes, its a Mexico tv series. That why I put (as a joke) Mexican Noir as it's in the BB$ noir slot.

So has sub titles as mostly in Spanish.

A great series - nice to have Mexican noir, I really enjoyed it :)

I'm still watching week by week and like they way they are showing the reality of some women's lives without it being a lecture.

But not a great ad for Mexican men!

I binged it and really enjoyed it.

I've only just caught up with Saturday's episodes. Think it is better than I thought at first, because I was put off by the beauty contest part of it, the clothes, the make up.

Have stopped letting this distract me and more focused on the characters and the plot.

SPOILER for anyone who hasn't watched all episodes!!

I was so hoping for all of the women to defeat the system ie the men controlling them.

So disheartening. I saw one review that made it sound like the one who was crowned queen was part of the manipulation. But I thought it was once she realised that the women had been deceived again, out of fear rather than triumph, she went through with it. How did they swap the tape so that the one that would show the truth didn't get shown?

But of recent series I have tried and thought why bother, this and Tokyo Spice are the only ones I have felt I really wanted to know what would a happen, and felt that the story telling was good.

Only saw last two weeks, it was gripping and was great to watch to take mind off football defeat.
It was chilling, had shades of the Epstein story.
Was hoping for the big exposé, but obvs some one on the corrupt side was in the edit suite, cancelling the sister's live interview and ditching the dodgy tape.
Great story telling, there was a good line at the end, something about not letting the 'wolf' inside......
