What. Da. Fuq? As DS just said after the musical number “did that just happen?”

It’s Dr Who Jim, but not as we know it.

Edited for typo.

@Globules I better get myself a lottery ticket for the next draw then!

Giggorata · 25/12/2023 20:22

To the person who was asking about Jodie: I didn’t like the way she was written, as a nervy and self doubting, needy sort of person. I didn't like the millions of not very interesting companions. I didn't like the over wokeness

I like my Doctor to be the cleverest person in the country but almost childlike sometimes and for it to hit you in the face sometimes that s/he is a thousand year old alien.
A human said this about the Doctor, but he couldn't have said this about Jodie, I think:
“ He's like fire and ice and rage. He's like the night and the storm in the heart of the sun.
He's ancient and forever. He burns at the centre of time and can see the turn of the universe.
And... he's wonderful.”

Might be able to say this about Ncuti..

Christmaswrap · 25/12/2023 20:30

Bland disappointing crap. Be nice if rtd tried definitely get the feeling he’s full of his own genius.
they should get the woman that wrote fleabag and a decent side kick with a bit of character. Maybe even someone, god forbid whose not blonde and pretty.

I kinda liked it once the Disney bit was out of the way. I hope they don't lose the soul of Dr Who by selling out to Disney world.
That being said I think Ncuti was great, clearly having the time of his life and I reckon he and Ruby will be a good pairing. All the episodes so far have been a curates egg but show promise. With the Jody era I didn't make it past the first episode.
The whole Ruby and her family had strong echoes of the Rose era I thought.
Finally, I was thinking why wasn't the nosey neighbour more phased by the Tardis and then...they said her name was Mrs Flood. So....River Song, Amy Pond ...Somebody has a thing about water names.

Agree with all of this. I really wasn't keen on the song and dance number, that felt very Disneyfied and not Dr Who. The rest felt very in keeping, though. Liked Ruby. Ncuti was great too... I did think he might be a bit too pretty, but I suppose that's Disney for you.

Hope we get more Anita Dobson and Angela Wynter. They're both great, and it would be nice to see room made for two older actresses.

First episode of Dr Who that we have ever seen, not sure on the musical scene but it kept our attention. I wonder if it's worth binge watching past series'?

Yes definitely. Both the Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant series. The Weeping Angels episode with David Tennant is my all time favourite episode.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 25/12/2023 20:59

Enjoyable enough. Found the music loud in places drowning out what was being said at times. Looking forward to see where this goes next though. Hopefully in the right direction cause like what saw so far its just having the script and that to go with it now

MissyB1 · 25/12/2023 21:06

Best one in a very long time! I’ve been watching Dr Who since John Pertwee in the 70s, I really enjoyed tonight’s. The last few years I felt it really lost its way, looking forward to more of the new Dr!

SaltySeaCat · 25/12/2023 21:19

So who are Ruby’s biological parents?! No DNA matches seems very unlikely…. Could her mother be Mrs Flood?

Geertings · 25/12/2023 22:09

I think that the “rent control” was aimed at the American audience and they were actually living in social housing. When I lived in London in quite an upmarket area, the Victorian properties had a mixture of social tenants who had been there for many years, and owners that had bought properties at very high prices that had been sold off as part of right to buy or the council selling to make money when they became vacant.

Eyesopenwideawake · 25/12/2023 22:11

Awful. Just awful.

rockstarshoes · 25/12/2023 22:11

I really enjoyed it!

I haven't watched since about 2 episodes into the Jodie Whittaker era!

The actress who plays Ruby Sunday was in Coronation Street and her acting was good so hopefully she will find her feet!

Crikeyisthatthetime · 25/12/2023 22:26

Can't believe so many people think it was ok. We watched it with jaws on the floor in astonishment, and not in a good way. The goblins were beyond awful. And that musical number with the goblin Ms piggy, just no.
Having said that, I love the new doctor. Milly Gibson was great in Corrie so hopefully her character will improve. She wasn't given much to go on in today's effort .

ThePoshUns · 25/12/2023 22:28

I loved it. Haven't enjoyed Dr Who so much since the DT days. I enjoyed the episode, very tongue in cheek. I liked Ruby, good chemistry between her and the Dr.
I live near Cardiff and Bristol so enjoyed spotting the locations as well.

"not blonde and pretty" is unfair. Catherine Tate is much more interesting than that and there have been lots of non blonde companions.

I enjoyed it, not keen on the musical bit but thought the goblin's fingers and arms were proper creepy. The huge flat had the feel of an optical illusion and I think if you want Dr Who to be realistic you're probably barking up the wrong tree.

I thought the foster mum was an amazing actress - the switch from warm and nurturing to beaten down and resentful was really well done. Loved Ncuti and thought Ruby was charming. No complaints here.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 25/12/2023 22:33

Liked it. Proper dr who.
But goblins do not live in ships sailing the skies. They are damp dwelling underground and leaf mould strewn holes in dark forest dwelling creatures. As everyone rightly knows. Harrumph.

ToastandJamandTea · 25/12/2023 22:49

I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to May to get into their story!

IIRC she's only the second blonde companion since the reboot? Unless you count Kylie Minogue from that one episode.

wizzbitt · 25/12/2023 22:54

Haven't watched Dr Who since the 80s when it used to terrify me. But I decided to get into it with my 9yo DS as I love Ncuti. The first two episodes with David Tennant and Catherine Tate were brilliant. I didn't understand why he was back and not Jodie but I'm assuming she was a bit of a damp squib and DT is so charismatic?
I thought the new companion's acting was a bit yr1 drama school and the storyline was silly but there were some lovely moments. The foster mum's change was so well done. I'd like to have seen more of that storyline before the Dr went back in time.
Obviously I have no idea what the water references mean Flood etc- and I'm way too lazy to google.
On the whole we both enjoyed it though. But I'm not that much of a fan so may lose interest by May! 😂

Coronado2 · 25/12/2023 22:57

I really enjoyed it

Clawdy · 25/12/2023 23:09

Not usually a fan, but really enjoyed this one. The new doctor is great, and Ruby is a very good actor.

Globules · 25/12/2023 19:17

We've been watching Dr Who waiting all day for the episode. (Christmas Invasion and Voyage of the Damned anyone). This episode did well to start to wash away the awful Jodie era. Not sure about the singing, but boy, Ncuti is going to be good with Russell T Davies at the helm.

David Tennant and Billie Piper/Catherine Tate are easily the best series' if you're new to Dr Who.

This, all of this.

CountTo10 · 25/12/2023 20:56

Yes definitely. Both the Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant series. The Weeping Angels episode with David Tennant is my all time favourite episode.

Christmas 2008 The Next Doctor
DT and David Morrissey , Dervla Kirwan.

Excellant , (I'm not even a Dr Who fan, but this is my favourite episode and my Christmas watch )

drspouse · 25/12/2023 23:31

I liked it and was hoping to start my adopted DCs on watching it more (they liked Sarah Jane) but with that storyline, no way!

MissTrip82 · 26/12/2023 03:46

Story was rubbish but loved the new dr. Amazing charisma.

DuckalaBanana · 26/12/2023 06:58

Ulysees · 25/12/2023 19:11

It was like Labyrinth/Glee

Wasn't fussed on the new doctor but side kick's canny

Adult dcs thought it was mad

I thought Fraggle Rock / Gremlins
