What. Da. Fuq? As DS just said after the musical number “did that just happen?”

It’s Dr Who Jim, but not as we know it.

Edited for typo.

Who was the older woman neighbour? Has she been in previous series at all?

Angie off Eastenders of yore, something Dickinson.

Anita Dobson

We've been watching Dr Who waiting all day for the episode. (Christmas Invasion and Voyage of the Damned anyone). This episode did well to start to wash away the awful Jodie era. Not sure about the singing, but boy, Ncuti is going to be good with Russell T Davies at the helm.

David Tennant and Billie Piper/Catherine Tate are easily the best series' if you're new to Dr Who.

Nudgethatjudge · 25/12/2023 19:17

It divided our household.
2 loved it
2 thought meh but willingly to see how it goes.

CaveMum · 25/12/2023 19:19

I knew that flat was in Clifton (Bristolian born n bred), I said as much to DH who shrugged in an unimpressed manner.

I jokingly said on the other Doctor Who thread a few weeks ago that RTD was bound to do a musical bit given his obvious nods to Buffy (2 Doctirs/2 Slayers, etc), so looks like I was right!

ShitIforgothelves · 25/12/2023 19:21

I liked it. Never watched the jodie whittaker series, what was wrong with it?

WotNoUserName · 25/12/2023 19:22

I loved the kitchen in the flat! I want it (but I expect it's £££££)

My boys are huge Who fans and loved it, lots of wondering who Mrs Flood is. Love Anita Dobson!

So far I like the new Doctor and Ruby.

RTD has just said EXACTLY this in Unleashed.

He said he's been desperate to do a musical episode for ages since the brilliant Buffy episode.

It's as if you knew!

I thought it was fun. Anita Dobson (Aka Lady May, which is pretty cool) is looking great now - there is obviously something going on with that character, but I'll be slightly disappointed if she's the Master. She might be Old Ruby or Ruby's time travelling mum.

Anita Dobson I think

mateysmum · 25/12/2023 19:29

I kinda liked it once the Disney bit was out of the way. I hope they don't lose the soul of Dr Who by selling out to Disney world.
That being said I think Ncuti was great, clearly having the time of his life and I reckon he and Ruby will be a good pairing. All the episodes so far have been a curates egg but show promise. With the Jody era I didn't make it past the first episode.
The whole Ruby and her family had strong echoes of the Rose era I thought.
Finally, I was thinking why wasn't the nosey neighbour more phased by the Tardis and then...they said her name was Mrs Flood. So....River Song, Amy Pond ...Somebody has a thing about water names.

Butteredtoast55 · 25/12/2023 19:34

Ooh, well spotted @mateysmum

thatsnotmywean · 25/12/2023 19:35

It was wierd.
I liked the singing.
I don't like Ruby, I don't think the acting was all that great from the actress, and the character was very much 'all right then', when if it were me, I'd be utterly confused and demanding more answers from the Dr.
So not a very realistic plot.
Goblins were wierd, not scary, bit boring.
Mrs Flood though - flood, pond, river...connection there I think!!! She knows its a Tardis but the doctor doesn't seem to recognise her. But DTs Dr didn't recognise River at first cause different timelines. Is it River, an older Amy, or another Pond?

It's really difficult to define. The writing was just a bit crap. The other showrunners always had bits which made me shake my head and say "oh Rusty/Steven, what were you thinking?" But the Chibnall era increasingly made my heart sink from the beginning of each episodes even though a couple of bits were OK.

A lot of people blamed the failure of the Whittaker / Chibnall era on the "woke agenda" but I think they must have been people who'd never previously watched any other 21st century Dr Who episodes. There's been politics / representation issues since the first Eccleston episode, but it's all about how you do it.

ErrolTheRednosedDragon · 25/12/2023 19:39

It was fun. The musical bit was incongruous but I'll forgive it as it's Christmas.

We gave up on the Jodi Whittaker ones after the first few episodes, they were so disappointing due to the writing.

DH and I had been oblivious of the 60th anniversary trio but dd said they were good so we'll watch them sometime.

Newgirls · 25/12/2023 19:39

Loved it! Ncuti was fabulous. Loved the singing gremlins. Lovely foster message. Xmassy church. Anita Dobson flood like her a lot.Perfect!

SmugglersHaunt · 25/12/2023 19:39

I thought the assistant’s acting wasn’t great - even Davina McCall acting as Davina McCall was more convincing

hitherandhither · 25/12/2023 19:40

Loved Ncuti (but easy to do as love him as an actor). Ruby Sunday seemed a bit one dimensional - her emotions always seemed to be quite high so I'm hoping that we see more depth going forward.

The musical part seemed a bit shoe horned in - RTD ticklist? If they'd made the goblins a bit more magical then I could buy it in a way, because I'm also a Buffy fan so I'd get the homage.

Can't believe we have to wait until bloody May though!!

PS Found this about the price of a top floor flat in that stretch of terraced houses. Obv. the inside doesn't match the one on screen - perhaps the TARDIS was involved in some way! Grin

They did say that the flat had some kind of rent control and that's why they couldn't move out despite it being grossly unsuitable for grandmother's needs.

MyLadyTheKingsMother · 25/12/2023 19:48

Well that was crap.

What's with the baby eating goblins?

I hope this isn't another switch off season like capaldi's

PinkFrogss · 25/12/2023 19:50

I enjoyed it, there were certainly a lot of parallels with the first episode of new who, which I found intriguing.

PriOn1 · 25/12/2023 19:51

It was amusing enough, though won’t stand out as a classic Chrismas episode. Bit lacking in plot and depth. Love the new Doctor, like Ruby. Singing was weird, but not bad enough to be offputting.

The Jodie Whittaker era seemed to get more and more preachy. Dr Who has made political points and had agendas, but they were always secondary to a plot. In the Whittaker era, the politics were the main point and the plot became secondary. Having a political agenda without becoming tedious needs great writing and that was missing.

Pieceofpurplesky · 25/12/2023 19:52

I enjoyed it. It set up the new series - who is Ruby, what is Mrs Flood's connection. The goblins were fun for kids on Christmas Day. It delivered and RTF and Ncuti will be a fabulous team

megletthesecond · 25/12/2023 20:01

I've not really watched it in decades but I liked it. I assume Anita Dobson will pop back as a baddie / goodie. And what about the mum, unless she is the mum?
