Has anyone saw Ricky Gervais latest video *TW*

He has recently posted a video on his tik tok of his Netflix special due out in a few weeks, and he's making fun of children with cancer.

I could barely get through the video to be honest. Felt sick.

I know there is dark humor but my god, surely this is too far?

Found it.

Admittedly, I'm hard to offend - I'm not offended. It's more of a joke about humour, isn't it?

Anyway. TW and all that:

Ah I just found it quite distasteful and I'm also hard to offend, trust me 🤣

Thats how I took it.

Of all the men in the world that are bad, I don’t think Ricky Gervais is one of them.

Neitheronethingnortheother · 01/12/2023 01:25

But he's not making fun of kids with cancer, that's not the point of that clip that's shared at all

In fact I think the point has sailed over your head OP

If it's sailed over my head then can you explain?

I found it over all distasteful as did 95% of the comments under the Instagram posts ...

Instagram. 🙄

Wiccan · 01/12/2023 01:29

They are just jokes and Ricky has a great way of explaining that they are jokes . It's one of the reasons I like him .

PMAalltheway · 01/12/2023 01:37

I feel it was a step too far. I'm always open for comics to have free speech but some things should be off limits.

GarlicMaybeNot · 01/12/2023 01:46

OK, what does fava beans and a nice Chianti make you think of?

Has it ever given you a bit of a chuckle? Does that mean you support cannibals making a stylish meal of their victims' livers?

... which is an extrapolation of the point Gervais was making. One of the roles of performance art is to examine the things that "should be off limits".

There's a millennia-old discussion to be had about why our sense of humour skirts close to revulsion, but that's one you'll have to take up with philosophers and comedians.

He's explaining that when he does comedy he plays a role in the same way that actors play a role, but somehow actors can play rapists and murderers and racists on films etc without (most) people getting personally annoyed with the actor, but people get personally annoyed at comics when they play a role and say something someone doesn't like.

Honestly he explains it really well, I genuinely can't see how you think the focus of this clip is around making fun of kids with cancer.

CavalierApproach · 01/12/2023 01:54

It doesn’t come across to me as if he’s making fun of children with cancer at all.

I found his use of the r-word a lot more shocking, even though it immediately becomes evident that he’s not using it casually, but doing a ‘bit’ that turns on how shocking it is to hear someone use that word. Messing with the audience’s shockability antennae a bit. I see the difference there, although I still don’t like hearing it and I think you could make a case that it’s not justifiable (which I personally would probably find more convincing than any assertion that the clip there is making fun of cancer victims).

It’s clever although I found it uncomfortable to watch, which I’m sure is the goal.

I have zero time for any IG posters having fits of the vapours about it.

Wiccan · 01/12/2023 02:00

I'm looking forward to watching Armageddon. Gervais is a fucking genius, is it still ok to use the word genius ?

Dibbydoos · 01/12/2023 03:55

I completely agree.

RG is sound.

He was taking the rise. I wasn't offended when I watched this.

He is doing work for Make a Wish. The kids who want a chat with him know what he's like.

HoppingPavlova · 01/12/2023 04:05

Exactly this.

Josette77 · 01/12/2023 04:16

But that's not what it's about?

DC1888 · 01/12/2023 04:51

He's a sound fella Ricky.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 01/12/2023 05:41

Ricky Gervais, who wrote a series of posts using an offensive term for people with Down’s Syndrome? And then doubled down when challenged? And then claimed he didn’t know the origin of the term? That Ricky?

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 01/12/2023 05:42

I haven't seen the clip but he is very big on the subject of a joke isn't necessarily the target of the joke.

Capertillar · 01/12/2023 05:55

I told off on MN for saying fit of the vapours.
Apparently it's misogynistic!

NutellaEllaElla · 01/12/2023 06:32

I haven't got time for your virtue spiraling, fun policing, humourless, authoritarian bullshit.

GetYourBaublesOut · 01/12/2023 06:41

Of all the comedians out there, I believe RG is one of those with his heart in the right place. Him and Rhod Gilbert

He is not making fun of children with cancer in this. He is telling a joke and then going in to explain the joke.

To illustrate what he is saying, the joke needs to be one that - if you believed that's who he really is - would be distasteful. Otherwise it doesn't work as an illustration.

He's a prick who loves punching down in his 'comedy'. I honestly do not get the love for him at all.

pickledandpuzzled · 01/12/2023 07:04

I dislike sharp, cruel comedy. So I don’t watch it. That’s most of RG stand up stuff. I can still recognise the cleverness of it. I think the nastiest stuff is that reflects our nastiest side. The famous ‘her penis’ sketch wouldn’t have been nasty of nastiness hadn’t been present to reflect.

It’s interesting though- people laughed at Russel Brand. We do need to exercise discernment.

pickledandpuzzled · 01/12/2023 07:14

I commented before watching. I take it back. It’s really funny. And I’m not a great fan.

We do obsess over particular words and probably shouldn’t.

DM (84) referred to the Spastic Society when passing their old building where she’d done deliveries in the past. Her young adult family members were really shocked and told her she shouldn’t. For goodness sake!

fourelementary · 01/12/2023 07:18

I’ve always had a horrible reaction to RG. I actually want to punch him, like a visceral reaction. But even I don’t disagree with his point and his stance in this situation. I can see he is a talented writer and comedian and an
intelligent man. But I do hate him. But sorry @justanothermanicmonday1 you’re in the wrong here.
