Has anyone saw Ricky Gervais latest video *TW*

He has recently posted a video on his tik tok of his Netflix special due out in a few weeks, and he's making fun of children with cancer.

I could barely get through the video to be honest. Felt sick.

I know there is dark humor but my god, surely this is too far?

Personally I'm not a fan of his. However, I can imagine the kids who ask/wish for messages from him would bloody love this and the message he'd send.

lightinthebox · 10/12/2023 17:33

Of course MNetters will defend RG, I’m not surprised.

If you have to explain a joke then it’s not a good joke and you aren’t a good comedian. You shouldn’t need to explain a joke to your audience, write better and less lazy jokes. Is this seen as funny just because it’s RG?

Clip has had the desired effect though, it’s got people talking.

WhatYouWearing · 10/12/2023 18:00

Ricky Gervais is an atheist, vegan, animal lover, comedic genius who understands women's oppression.

He's extremely witty and clever and knows exactly where the line is to stop him getting cancelled.

He has donated almost £2million from his latest tour to animal charities. For that I love him. He's always using social media to highlight animal abuse.

Stop being precious OP.

Or, maybe don’t be thick, so you have initially understand?

ace249 · 11/12/2023 08:43

oh, so lots of people on instagram were offended were they? They've been offended for years! Ricky loves offending them! Look at his bank balance if you want to understand how huge his fan base actually is.

salsmum · 11/12/2023 12:42

I have always appreciated RG and respected him for his animal rights support... but I wonder how offended he'd be IF he was sat in the audience and the comedian was making jokes about animal abusers and how the comedian would love to microwave a kitten or kick a dog to death? After going into great detail of how he'd commit these crimes the comedian could then make a cheap joke and explain "it's only an act! I have several pets that I love". Would the bad taste of that joke then be acceptable because the comedian was clearly joking?
I'm sure if that happened and RG was in the audience he'd appreciate why he'd feel deeply offended by an animal a**se joke and others might laugh. I have worked in care for many years and there are times when you have to develop a black/dark humour so I get that BUT as the parent of a Dd who's severely disabled I think some 'jokes' are a low blow and I think RG has found the all time low but hey ho! If it gets him publicity that's all good eh? SMH.

Diamonde · 11/12/2023 14:29

If the joke was actually funny with a punchline, I don't see why he wouldn't laugh. If it's just some creep going off about torture, then no.

I'm sure he doesn't find children with cancer funny either, but he's an intelligent man and can discern humour from insanity

EachandEveryone · 25/12/2023 23:00

Has anyone watched it on Netflix yet?

YoBeaches · 25/12/2023 23:06

Just watched it, it's a bit tamer than last years.

I think he's great, his writing and execution make him brilliant

And be reminded all the way through. If he offends you, switch off, it's totally your choice.

MillarMountVandal · 26/12/2023 00:29

Watched it, loved it. I love all his stuff.

He's a whip smart satirist, and a fucking good guy.

Loubelle70 · 26/12/2023 00:32

I lost any respect for him (i didn't have any anyway but you know )...when he made a joke about M.E

Charlie2121 · 26/12/2023 00:37

People getting offended about the subject of jokes are just dull.

If such comments were made as serious non comedic points then fair enough that may not be appropriate on occasions but humour is different.

Humour always has a target meaning those who are permanently offended by everything may as well not listen to any comedians.

Please don’t ever watch multi-award winning comedian Stewart Lee.

If you're so stupid you don't realise he's not taking the piss out of children with cancer you're the exact type of person he's mocking.

SmellyKat10 · 26/12/2023 01:44

Rightly or wrongly he offends people but I hate that such offended people can’t seem to just change the channel. No. They need to impose their views on everyone else. We need to hear their offence.

Honestly. Just don’t watch it if you don’t like it. Leave the rest of us alone and stop trying to police everything.

Agree, he should be cancelled. Causing offence should be an arrestable offence .

I find it ironic that those complain about RG are usually found in the demographic that feature in his jokes.

I thought it was brilliant.

His final dialogue about oppressive 'with or against me' bullies was impressive.

I love comedy in all its forms. Finding the humour, and being able to laugh about (not at, as is always the given caveat) the absolute shit storm life often throws at us, is priceless.

For me, as the parent of a baldie who certainly isn’t a retrd, it is using it as the promotional clip that irks the most. It means even more people see it. It will make it seem ok to call these children baldie or retrd. to the pp who is an adult cancer patient- great that you find it funny. But you are not a Make a Wish kid being made fun of. The lack of empathy on this thread is quite sad. It’s never you, until the day it is.

As the sibling of someone with learning difficulties, who has been taunted with the word 'retrd' a lot of his life (and often physically abused at the same time), I relate to your post.
I don't know how anyone can find anything about that clip amusing. And no, it hasn't gone over my head at all. Just makes me sad about the lack of empathy around.

Brird · 26/12/2023 14:49

I just watched part of Armageddon. I broadly like RG, have found earler specials funny.

I started watching it and thought, hmm, ok. Not very funny, bit boorish but stayed with it. I turned off after the AIDS baby joke though. Sometimes an unfunny, cynical, boorish 'joke' is just that. Not a role, not post-modern social commentary. Just a shit, nasty joke.

Abg75 · 26/12/2023 21:55

Did you watch it to the very end? The whole video? Or are you just getting offended on behalf of others after watching a "clip"?

Do you know about the money he donates and the work he does for kids with cancer?

What are you doing from your sofa apart from being offended?

WarmBeerAndSandwiches · 26/12/2023 23:06

I'm not offended, I've liked quite a few of his specials (despite having ME), loved Afterlife and enjoyed The Office - not keen on Derek or found Extras so-so. I just thought it was unfunny. Don't think he should be banned or anything, just thought it was underwhelming.

RoseGoldEagle · 27/12/2023 09:56

The butt of the joke isn’t the child here though. Of COURSE no one REALLY thinks a child can just wish to get better. As the viewer, you know that, and you know that the imaginary child in the scenario knows that (and that RG knows it too!), so it’s the character Ricky’s playing that’s making the ‘silly’ comment that’s actually the one that’s meant to be the ridiculous one. Whether you find it funny or not is subjective, obviously.

Being able to find humour in dark times can be the only thing that gets you through. It has to be done well though- and I think RG is a master of it, but of course not everyone agrees and that’s fine. And no one has to watch him!
