I said something similar about hate of BB housemates on the BB thread. It may seem on they day that they’ve done something outrageous and you’re annoyed because you’re immersed in this escapism you enjoy for an hour a night. In told old days Davina would give housemates a horrible time in the exit interview as crowds booed them and held signs up professing how much they hated them. But actually when you get some perspective, all that housemate had done was slag a few people off or get fingered in a hot tub.
And then we are baffled when collective hate ends in MH issues or, at the worst, suicide.
And let’s bear in mind when we watch these shows we are doing it on an evening after having had a normal day. These people, for the duration of their show, exist in a vacuum - everything feels a much bigger deal than it actually is and people behave in ways they perhaps otherwise wouldn’t.
I’ll say here what I said on the BB thread - it’s fine to dislike a contestant but we need to be careful not to take it too far. A pantomime level of dislike is as far as it should go. I DO think Nella is pretty awful but actually she doesn’t affect my life or those I love so I have a very low level dislike of her. People dredging up old tweets trying to do a ‘gotcha’ before she’s had a chance to defend herself is actually erring on the side of creepy and obsessive IMHO.
