Gutted that Mitch is gone. Loved his calm character and the way he called everyone 'baby'. Grin They could've done so much more with that family, yet we're left with keanu the moron. Poor Bernie too.

Sonia is dull as, honestly she's what 38, and she's floating around in a full length nightie like a dickens character. Dot was holier than thou but she had inner steel and wisdom. Sonia is nothing like her imo, yet they keep wanting her to be.

Always great to see Phil go full on gammon face though. Grin

@70isaLimitNotaTarget Mac and Mia go with them so just Bernie left in the flat. And agree I think felix lives with Chelsea so no idea who B will afford it all

Bernie will afford it on Easties magic wages. Don't worry.

RedToothBrush · 08/12/2023 21:16

Karen gets her Pina coladas and Spanish beach...

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 08/12/2023 21:33

Is Debbie really waking up??!!

@RedToothBrush agreed they have magic wages on EE, occasionally they have stories with Denise going to the food bank or the Minute Mart increasing prices but generally they’re not worrying about bills, or not for long.

They have houses like Blackpool illuminations.

And all the residents drink down the Vic three times a week.

Somehow I think Bernie will be just fine....

(Plus they have a set for Bernie (and friends) to move in)

I wish the writing was more subtle

General Discussion
EastEnders has been pretty good this year but, still, one of my biggest problems with the show is the forced and painfully obvious writing. I much prefer it when the writing feels natural and consistent with what we know about these characters, but nowadays it often feels like I'm watching something that was written by a team of people. Characters' behaviour completely changes depending on the storyline, and things just seem to conveniently happen if that's what the storyline needs in order to play out how the writers want it to.
Some examples of this recently:

  • Suki and Eve kissing in full view of the CCTV cameras, and Nish needing to go and check the cameras later on, leading to him finding out about the affair (after a year of being so careful, why would they make such an obvious slip-up?!)
  • Nish coming home and Suki's phone being left on the kitchen table without a passcode and with the text messages already visible
  • Vinny suddenly deciding to help Suki and Eve run away, even though he's been against the idea for months and even tried to kill Eve in order to stop them from leaving
  • Priya finding out about Suki's affair right after she was told to leave the house, meaning she now has leverage and can blackmail Suki into letting her stay
  • Stacey deciding to meet up with Theo to discuss the case, even after everything that's happened
  • Karen's friend posting pictures of himself and Albie on social media at the same time as the fake kidnapping, allowing Phil to find out what really happened (also, how did Sam of all people find this?!)
  • George slapping Dean down the stairs (and George conveniently having a criminal record that was never mentioned before), meaning that Dean now has something he use against Linda
  • Jack and Denise's relationship suddenly going to shit again just so that a Jack and Stacey affair storyline can happen
  • Jay getting into a car crash right after everyone had just disowned him, meaning they feel bad and quickly forgive him for everything
  • Alfie finding out that Phil cheated on Kat but deciding not to say anything because he's got cancer, allowing the storyline to be dragged out for several months

I just thought about this and another good example of this is Lily’s pregnancy - the reason Lily fell out with Amy and started hanging out with Ricky in the first place was because she was worried about Amy having underage sex and told her mum who told Amy’s parents - then she ended up having underage sex and getting pregnant herself.

I actually wish Karen, Mitch, and the kids all the luck in sunny Spain. East London has not been kind to them. However, Brexit won't allow them to live there forever, but the script writers care not for immigration laws.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 09/12/2023 00:28

When Johnny Sausage comes back to the Square , Anna and Gina might decide they want to move in with Berniee (as she works in the Vic )

Or maybe Priya and Avani ?
People move into each others houses all the time on Eastenders .

And Sam will be looking for a roof over her head (she was shagging Ken so can use the I;m practically your Sister-in-Law line Grin )

Viewer23 · 09/12/2023 06:05

I think it’s wild that Karen and family are running away to Spain when Phil Mitchell has so many connections there. You’d have thought they’d have chosen somewhere where they were less likely to come in contact with him.

MrsPuddle · 09/12/2023 08:06

It’s so handy how everyone has some hold over someone else, so sharon and Phil (yet again) dont call the police. For a gangster phil is losing his touch.

the80sweregreat · 09/12/2023 09:42

Phil lost his touch a while ago.
He ends up in hot water by not keeping it in his pants and lets his various ex's and current wife talk him out of actually hurting anyone too !
Kat and Sharon should work for the UN.
They all know secrets about each other too , which is always handy for black mail or not calling the police on people
Going to Germany to see Keegan would have more realistic, at least it's family and not as far to travel

Johnny sausage is bound to make a play for either Ben or Callum ( Callum is my bet as his nicer than Ben )
Bernie might move in with Chelsea and Felix ?
Makes sense as she needs new lodgers now Whitney and Zac have gone
This penny and Jade are coming in it soon, maybe they might get Karen's old flat ?
Although penny is in a wheelchair, so maybe not
Alfie's flat is pretty big and his on his own now too.

I thought all Phil’s family lived in Portugal though? Spain is a big place so unless they move to the Costa del Crime (I know that area a bit personally don’t ask me how!) they should manage to steer clear of Phil’s contacts.

MrsPuddle · 09/12/2023 09:49

Jonny sausage???

the80sweregreat · 09/12/2023 09:57

Johnny Carter ! He is one of Linda's sons and she used to call him sausage
He is a human rights lawyer and gay

That makes sense although Sam, Ronnie, Roxie and Peggy have all lived there and Sam lived there fairly recently - I guess it leaves the door open for a storyline in the future.

the80sweregreat · 09/12/2023 10:02

Karen n Mitch etc going to Germany would have made more sense or even Milton Keynes !

All gay men have the same taste and chase the same men. Obviously.

Phil is a really really shit gangster. He's so sloppy and weak.

Sharon is just the dumbest woman ever. Keanu is a good intellectual match for her.

I don't get the whole Whitney leaving thing unless Zac goes with her too. Unless he's dead and The Curse of Whitney has struck again.

Visas mean nothing to the Mitchell family either.

I mean known gangster family just fucking off abroad to live post Brexit is THAT easy!

Wait until they bring in ETIAS visas next year (starts in the Autumn) which are designed to keep out Brits with criminal records....

the80sweregreat · 09/12/2023 10:10

Not sure what Johnny will bring to the soap tbh
They like having a lawyer around I suppose , but will be actually have a job or have to ( gasp) commute up town to work ?
He wasn't a huge character in it at first. Linda struggled with his sexuality, Mick was fine with it all, but he didn't have big storylines really

Being a Lawyer in The Square is applying Parallel Universe Law .

Johnny Sausage spent 99% of his time a the bar of the Vic ( rather than at The Bar <see what I did there > ) but still manages to qualify

Gray spent 99% of his time prancing about the Square , picking up Mac&Mia at 3.30 (no clients obvs) or glaring at his laptop on the table

Ritchie has an Encyclopedic Knowledge of ALL Law , but especially Dodgy Law and Getting Your Clients Out of Prison, and is on a 24/7 retainer from Phil with a contract clause to appear within 20 minutes .

Then Nadine (Lola Look a Like) is studying Law and working as an escort (she seems to have gone to ground now )

People in The Square never go outside of The Square for a bunk up , so yes , Johnny Sausage will probably be working alongside Callum and the Spark will ignite .....

Gray's house had a ramp at the back when Vincent set it up to be accessible for Donna . If its still there then it could be a possible for Penny ? Maybe Denice will insist Jack buys the house as theirs is full to busting .

Which will leave the Taylors - which is a two level flat upstairs (Teds was below them )
Are we getting a New Family ?

Having worked with lawyers I too find it hilarious how they seem to interplay the areas of law with the characters on EE.

You forgot Eve, ex con so shouldn’t be practicing law on her release yet she does it on the side for various EE people including Nish (and then seemingly knows all law too) yet doesn’t seem bothered that she’s not allowed to be doing this! Surely she’d be shit scared someone would report her and she’d be back inside.

Gray seemed to me to be the most passable lawyer type despite prancing round the square and collecting his kids!

I’ve just worked out who Johnny Sausage is and of course it’s new head Johnny! He’ll definitely shag either Callum/Ben/Felix.
