I have autism too and I'd mask and play along and pretend I'd missed them, but inside I'd be thinking 'wtf we're not supposed to be seeing each other for another two weeks, off you pop'.

My DH sometimes works away from home and all I usually know is when he'll be back and roughly which country he's in. We have zero contact while he's away. Not because we can't, he's not a secret agent or anything, but because in my mind he doesn't exist if he's not here. It why I struggle with friendships. The only ones that last are the ones with people who are like me so not bothered about having no contact for years and pick up just where we left off.

Like my bestie who messaged me today to let me know she's booked flights to come over for Christmas. Literally the first contact between since she last came prepandemic. We'll have 2 weeks of fun and laughing and being as close as systers, staying up all night drinking wine and chatting. Then she'll go home and we won't speak again until she books to come over again in another year or two.
