Anyone else looking forward to the new season starting on Wednesday? It will seem a bit strange without Perez but looks to be a good cast and storyline so far as we know.

I’d forgotten Ruth’s priest brother. At the beginning, I thought his wife had been banged up rather than just left him. Wasn’t she at one point a suspect last season? Will her sudden defection be significant, or is it just the writers freeing up Rumpled Priest as a free agent?

I just assumed the actress playing Ruth’s sister in law had new acting commitments, so wasn’t available. One can sort of see that it would be a waste to be obliged to spend ages so far away for such a small part. And somewhat unlikely that the SIL could be given a more prominent role.

Oh, I'm sure that's true about the actor having other commitments, it's more that her sudden request for a divorce was talked about slightly more prominently than I would have expected if it's just a matter of the character being written out. (I mean, Duncan seemed to be in and out of relationships all the time, and mostly we never even met them, unless they were actually involved in a crime!)

@duc748 -- I can't remember much, but Ruth started suspecting the SIL when she was smoking the same unusual cigarettes as were found in the cottage where the girl who'd witnessed the hit in London was hiding before she was killed on Shetland, having run away with a big bag of someone else's money. I'm a bit vague on the details, but I think the SIL had introduced the dead girl to her flatmate, with whom she cooperated on the 'honeytrap for robbery' thing, but wasn't otherwise involved.

Though season 8 for me will always be the one where Lorraine from Deacon Blue played a blackmailing cleaner.

Ah, thanks, I remember now about the dog-ends. Did Ruth kinda lean on Amma to clear off?

longtompot · 07/11/2024 17:00

I just read it again and it did say something about this series being linked to some past events, so a bit of a spoiler but not too much I don't think.

IwantToRetire · 07/11/2024 17:27

Have to say I was not happy with the opening. It was so obviously a way to get us to remember why there was a new (female) detective.

And can never understand how Shetland, which seems to survive on 4 or 5 police personnel can suddenly muster up van loads of armed police that put any metropolitcan police drama to shame!

It too thought BiL's wife had already slipped away at end of last season, because Ruth had caught her out in some lie. But maybe this is the continuation, leaving husband baffled.

Poor Sandy only one speaking line, and some sideways looks whilst driving.

Who is the man in the office Ruth went to see. Cant quite remember his role. Prosecutor? Or ...

I suspect over arching plot will be that campervan man and young runaway will discover something dodgy going on in which ever part of Sheltand they were heading for, and it will be linked to missing husband, suspected murderer of Ruth's friend. It will be some potential ecological disaster.

I too hoped Bergen was going to be the place. The local police there always put the Scottish infiltrators in their place, but lots of different lovely scenery.

So cross I read the article linked to as it has plots giveaways that I never saw the reference to mumsnet!

Are Shetlanders really so committed to only doing traditional Scottish dancing at parties?!

Overall, am happy with this. Not extremely excited, but better than many of the 9pm offerings on mainstream tv.

PS the murder rate on Shetland seems extremely high. Only beaten by Oxford.

PPS Will the cake fridge make an appearance.

PPPS Did anyone see that one of the online cameras on Shetland had some of the best live displays of the Northern lights (or whatever they are called)?

duc748 · 07/11/2024 17:56

Cake fridges aren't restricted to Shetland. I've seen them elsewhere in the Highlands. It is remarkable how they are able to conjure up armed response teams at short notice.

Tiepolo · 07/11/2024 18:04

@IwantToRetire, I think Harry the man eating cake (from the cake fridge?) in his office is Harry, the current Procurator Fiscal. I miss Rhona, though. She wore nice silk shirts and was bolshie with Perez.

I missed the very beginning of last night’s episode (or maybe I didn’t miss much? I switched on when Ruth was talking to Crazy Gun Man about taking the job, and having a brother on Shetland and liking the team), so I assumed she’d been in there for hours, if not days, hence Tosh being outside with a lot of armed cops. But how did Tosh even know Ruth was there, if Ruth just dropped by off her own bat to do what she thought was a welfare check?

LadyEloise1 · 07/11/2024 18:07

I too was amazed they managed to get the crack shot heavily armed police onto Shetland at very short notice 😉

IwantToRetire · 07/11/2024 18:16

ah yes the silk shirt role.

"Cake fridges are common" - sad it hasn't crept south of the border.

Maybe Shetland has a hotline to Edinburgh? Aberdeen? and a special flying force of armed police are parachuted in!

I have to say that I did wonder whether they usually have a full SWAT team on standby on Shetland.

duc748 · 07/11/2024 19:52

Google Maps tells me that from Lerwick to Orkney is about 8 hours, and Lerwick to Inverness on the mainland is about 13-14 hours. I guess a helicopter would be quicker than the boat.

Ilovetea33 · 07/11/2024 20:49

I noticed the white sweater because I have a similar one, so I was taken aback when it suddenly disappeared.

Maybe they are based on some now disused oil rig that is closer.

I remember the episode when they arrived in huge numbers to stop some man from burning a woman's body. (Have totally forgotten the plot)

Swarms of them!

Kingdomoffife · 07/11/2024 22:16

I love how Ruth is always listening to Teenage Fanclub - it was the same in the last series, clearly someone on the crew is a fan!

I thought it was a really strong opener (with some great jumpers) - hope they can sustain it with a plausible storyline

SaffyRosie · 10/11/2024 17:19

Anybody know where the white Arran sweater is from?

It good to see an actress who seems to have a 'real ' face .
Loving the wardrobe and its making me forgive a few plot holes
Perfect winter viewing .

Perhaps they flew them in on one of those little "Government of Scotland" planes that Perez and Tosh used many series ago when they went to the murder on the island that had the sea bird research centre.

Lunde · 10/11/2024 19:04

One thing that puzzled me was the party scene where there were quite a few guys dancing in kilts. I thought that kilts weren't really a thing on Shetland because of the Scandinavian, (not Scottish) heritage of the islands?

IwantToRetire · 10/11/2024 19:11

Talking about Rhona and her silk shirts, I came across Julie Graham playing a polar opposite role in a series called Hardacre. A sort of Disneyfied Catherine Cookson.

Quite a contrast!

SaffyRosie · 11/11/2024 08:07

Thank you Museumum

Unfortunately made of acrylic and I don't buy clothes made of acrylic, polyester or nylon anymore.

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 11/11/2024 08:32

So I watched it on Saturday. A couple of things are bugging me.

Does Shetland really need two DI's? If Tosh is now DI is Sandy now a DS? Why have they made Sandy "no one knows Shetland as well" a bit part?

I know it's no longer based on the books but I wouldn't be surprised if Sandy leaves. Even her brother got more words than Sandy.

BiliousOhGod · 11/11/2024 09:54

Did I miss the bit where Tosh got out of having to move stations if she became a full DI? (Quite possible - I popped to the kitchen a couple of times.)

Re: the kilts, I thought it was weird, too - I don't recall ever seeing one being worn up there, and certainly not at any weddings; men just wear morning or lounge suits. We definitely have had a traditional "band" (fiddler and accordion) and Caller for the dancing, though.

mum2jakie · 13/11/2024 21:30

Anyone watching tonight's episode?

Merrilydancing · 13/11/2024 21:40

Yes I am. Confused over the police talking to a child without supervision,

Forestdweller11 · 13/11/2024 21:56

Probably belongs in style and beauty but where is the scarf Tosh is wearing from,?
