Anyone else looking forward to the new season starting on Wednesday? It will seem a bit strange without Perez but looks to be a good cast and storyline so far as we know.

I thought "they" killed Azirs son that's why he was being told to do as he's told or they'd kill his daughter.

I have come to the thread though as I am so not following who everyone is so obviously got this wrong too!!!

For me, this is the most confusing series ever. Haven't a clue who half the characters are!

I took it that it was Azir's wife that killed their son - perhaps PND? And Heather knows this and is blackmailing him, otherwise the wife would be arrested and/or other child taken away.

I am also so confused as to who everyone is. And none the wiser as to who killed Ellen. Not the weirdo plumber and not Tom.
I don’t think the psychiatrist killed his son I think his wife is unhinged mentally ill.
Tosh’s jumper is nice but looks itchy

Ashley Jensen is a terrible actress. She is ruining this for me. I am so missing Jimmy Perez. Love Tosh, Sandy and Billy.

OK - a new theory

When I think about "the symbol" - it looks a lot like the alchemy symbol for brass - except the the 2 lines across are angled on the Shetland version whereas the brass symbol has straight lines.

Is the meaning that it is connected to actual brass or is it connected to the slang for money?

I am wondering about the mental health unit connection. There seem to be an awful lot of people with poor MH and drug connections floating around. Is the MH unit experimenting with their own "alchemy" in making designer drugs for profit? Or did they develop an experimental treatment that has had bad side effects? Are they selling it or did someone steal it?

Still think that there must have been a reason for Ellie to have been in London catfishing drug dealers after she left the MH unit

I don't understand why Tosh didn't seize the book of Symbols from Tom's house. Or at least have a quick flick through it whilst she was there to see if there was any explanation for that symbol. But maybe it's because there's still another 3(?) episodes to go and we need to wait till the end of the series to find out.

Yeah - I thought that was odd too. You have a case where there is a link to an odd symbol. Then you have a suspect who has a book of symbols in their house ... but then you don't take the symbol book as potential evidence ?????

I’d love to go to Shetland. It’s beautiful.

I’m not particularly enjoying this. Too confusing and not great storyline or acting imo.

I said before I don't think the writing is anywhere near as strong this season. The plot-line lacks focus. How much of that is down to the loss of two of the best characters is hard to say. Still enjoying it, though, and Shetland is so beautiful.

Yes, that was clunky, the way she pitched up on the doorstep, "I'm the woman who was shagging your Dad". Seemed more like exposition for the benefit of the viewer than anything else.

I'm still enjoying it a lot although there are maybe too many side plots going on. Hopefully they will all be tied in at the end.
I had to rewatch episode 2 to get a better grip of the characters!

So is the implication that Ellie was Ruth´s (Ashley Jensen) half-sister?

Yes.

That would also make Ellie the half-sister of the Minister-brother, which might give him a motive - especially if he knew her better than he claimed in the first episode (the photo of them together on SM) and they had slept together 🤢

But it would seem an odd decision to make the brother a murderer as presumably AJ needs a reason to hang around Shetland after this series and she isn’t exactly looking keen to stay as it is. The association of your brother murdering someone there really wouldn’t help with that surely?!

Ellie would also be the SIL of the Minister's dodgy wife who seems to have an odd backstory

Indeed, and we know they had contact right before Ellie went to London and got involved in <whatever the fuck is going down>. And nothing says cover story like marrying a minister and running off to his home on Shetland…

Apart from AJ and Grandma Bains, which of the actors is most famous? In theory that ought to give a clue, as big stars command big roles. Though I’ll never forget ‘the girl who got off the ferry’ - didn’t know the actor but remember the chilling conclusion to the story …
