I thought I'd take inspiration from Shirley's word of the week. We're down to the last few pages of #7 and I had some spare time so thought I'd get prepared.

There was a dance that Anton did with Fiona Fullerton, now burned into my memory for all time, where it became clear that he would never wear such a thing.

Grin Cha cha when he wore a quite sexy hat: (fanton here) hate to be the bearer of bad (or even good news) for you, but that was a mic pack in his pocket and he wasn't pleased to see you!!! Wink

I do wonder if sometimes and in some costumes the male dancers wear a dance belt (where the bits go up and in rather than down and dangling). They are what male ballet dancers wear. There was a dance that Anton did with Fiona Fullerton, now burned into my memory for all time, where it became clear that he would never wear such a thing.

It must have been one of those novelty mic packs shaped exactly like a courgette.

Layton leaves me cold. He'll get to the final due to judges but won't get the public vote to win I think. The public likes a journey.

Oh I dunno, there have been contestants who have been great from the start and barely put a foot wrong and people have still voted for them. Harry Judd and Jay McGuinness for two. I don’t think a Leyton win can be completely ruled out.

Harry wasn't a ringer though - he was just blessed with a dream combination of perfect rhythm from his day job, excellent physical fitness and an unholy work ethic/competitive spirit. He was "pretty" good from week 1 but he didn't come top of the leader board until week 7.

Jay was a ringer (not to Layton's level) but managed to keep it very quiet, much like Caroline. And although he topped the leaderboard in Movie week for obvious reasons, he didn't do it again until week 11. There wasn't the same level of technical dominance that we have with Layton and Ashley Roberts.

MavisMcMinty · 22/10/2023 12:46

Jay won it with his week 3 Pulp Fiction jive. I can’t be the only one who assumed he’d do it again in the final and felt slightly cheated that he didn’t, but read afterwards he and Aliona said the brilliance of week 3 was a bit of a fluke, the only time it had gone perfectly!

I had no idea he and Caroline Flack were “ringers”, and voted for them both, week after week.

EvilRingahBitch · 22/10/2023 12:51

Natalie Gumede is the other Uber Ringah I guess. Highly trained dancer and even more dominant in terms of scoring than Layton and Ashley. Finished top of the leaderboard in all but two weeks, and one of them she was off sick. Didn't hit the dance off until the semis. I'm now going to hit YouTube to remind myself of all her dances I think because she was phenomenal.

MavisMcMinty · 22/10/2023 13:03

I voted for Natalie too! I basically vote for the best dancers, certainly once we’re past the early weeks.

IncognitoMam · 22/10/2023 13:05

Adam does have rheumatoid arthritis 😞 He'll be getting my votes from now on. He hasn't mentioned it has he?

MavisMcMinty · 22/10/2023 13:05

But I’ve never ever voted for the “joke” contestant, don’t want to see shit dancing on my telly when I can do that myself at home.

DontBeAPrickDarren · 22/10/2023 13:14

Just caught up so didn’t vote but loved Ellie (have every week) and Krishnan. Layton is great to watch but wouldn’t ever vote for him (sorry Nikita).

Bobby will do a beautiful rumba I think, if given an opportunity.

Eddy and Zara for dance off for me - not sure who to go.

Lentilweaver · 22/10/2023 13:28

Rewatched some videos and was very impressed by:

Ellie's incredible consistency. I would be happy if she won
Krishnan's massive improvement in learning how to lead and drive
Layton and Nikita both dancing to their full potential.

The spins are always the giveaway with ringers. Properly trained dancers have the spotting technique that enables them to do a run of spins without wobbling/falling over. Celebs who've just done a bit of dance at theatre school don't and they can't learn it in the course of a Strictly run, or at least not at the same time as everything else they have to learn.

The pros know how hard it is so if their celeb can do them they always put it into the choreo to impress the judges. That's also why Craig does it to show off at the beginning of the show. But it's a huge giveaway if, like Jay, you're trying to pass as a novice. I loved Jay, but he did keep his dance qualifications very quiet.

Girlontherailreplacementbusservice · 22/10/2023 14:04

I just find the 'Oh Mr/Miss Ringy McRingerface doesn't have ballroom/latin experience so being a professional dancer isn't an advantage at all' a bit of a cheek when two minutes later the ballroom/Latin pros are expected to teach and perform a Street routine, all be it with some choreography help from an expert. Either pro dancers can be expected to turn their hand to other styles or the can't but I'm not swallowing the cake and eat it line we are constantly fed.

I saw Ashley Pussycat introduce herself as a dancer on the Stand up to Cancer heights challenge thing the other day a bit of a contrast to Strictly's insistence that she is a singer.

Dances classes as a kid, even theatre school if they were clearly on a music or acting pathway and tolerated having to turn up to dance classes it totally different to those whose primary talent is dancing. I feel so sorry for Ellie that she didn't get to top the leader board last night because of a performance by two pros.

Edited

I saw both the 50's and 60's incarnations of Rip it Up (a dance show that featured various, very good strictly alumni) as I noticed that the point it was easiest to tell the celebs from the pros was on spins. The pros hit front and centre every time, the celeb often were a few degrees out, if they didn't have pros next to them it probably wouldn't even have been noticeable.

This is exactly how I see it. Unjust.

I've never known anyone wear one for "normal" ballroom and Latin. They just wear boxer briefs or whatever.

Often the shirts have a sort of leotard bottom to stop the riding up, and ballroom and Latin trousers are usually fairly loosely cut and in dark colours. So nothing is as visible as it would be in ballet tights. Grin

@HelloGoodby "I thought I bet that hurt.
My DD use to dance, but she could only do a lovely controlled spilts.
He is brilliant, but I don’t ever vote for the ringer. I like a journey, and joy, so Krishnan and Ellie are my favourites."

It doesn't hurt. I used to be able to jump into the splits (and I was never a professional dancer).

Did you land on your test-icicles, though? Grin

Emotionalsupportviper · 22/10/2023 15:31

ChessieFL · 22/10/2023 07:47

Are you a man though Summer15coming? I imagine jumping into the splits is likely to be more painful for men due to their, er, equipment getting in the way?

Should have read one post further on.

As you were, folks.

Figgygal · 22/10/2023 15:33

Zara or Eddy tonight though wont miss Adam when his time comes
Same with Annabel shes a lovely person but going nowhere winning wise

I'm sure I've seen photos of male ballet dancers where their meat-and-two-veg is more than obvious.

I'd like Ellie or Amanda to win - hoping Amanda is ok again for next week.

I love it that Krishnan, who could have been a joke act, is working his socks off & his partner (can't remember her name) is bringing out the best in him. I really enjoy watching him!

I've just googled them and I'd like to think that they are all the boyfriends of the Polish milkmaids from Eurovision.

Oh my word !
I just googled the Polish cycling team !!
