I don't enjoy watching Layton (although he's a very accomplished dancer) but that Guardian article was really interesting and moving.

The algorithm has thrown up some Mirror article about Karen, where she says she would never have left Kevin, and his leaving took her completely by surprise to the point where she could not get out of bed. 😔How very dare he! Can't imagine why KFG would possibly leave a goddess like Karen. He should be so lucky...

No idea about who left whom and for what reason, but Karen and Kevin were still on good terms the year he won with Stacey.

You can even hear Karen saying "Well done! You did it!" when she went over to give him a hug at the end of the show.

It must be so awful for her right now, dealing with the breakdown of her marriage amd exposure of her personal life, and trying to do her job as a Strictly pro.

Sometimes I read that Layton is well-trained in musical theatre, but has no experience of ballroom.

Until I’d read that article I didn’t know he’d played Billy Elliot, so he must have ballet experience. One of my favourite sequences in that is “Solidarity Forever” - here’s a clip. with Tom Holland as Billy. If you want to avoid the fruity language just watch the last minute.

If Layton can still do that his balance must be amazing.

I've put a clip of Layton doing an interview when he was Billy on the other thread. It sounds like he only started ballet and tap after he got the role.

Which is (a) extremely impressive how quickly he got good at it and (b) seems a really strange way to cast it?

Karen's divorce isn't from Kevin it's from someone since Kevin yeah ?

Yes, Karen's third husband. Kevin was her second.

Where's the interview where she says Kevin left her and she'd never have left him? That is very strange given his demeanour on the show at the time.
Everyone assumed it was the other way round.
At the time he'd been up North a lot training with Susan, whereas she'd been an earlier boot with Simon iirc.
It doesn't make a lot of sense given the nature of the show, that she'd be nagging/hurt/sulking about time apart to the extent that he just left. I thought there was rumour she'd been close to an American/trainer and that's why they broke up (her cheating on him) but I'd need to look up the sleb twaddle again.
Unless she means she'd never have left, had he dallied. There were. of course, the Louise rumours in the year Will Young walked, but again I thought they were just that.
Re Kevin's divorces, first one was a marriage of convenience no?

A lot of dance marriages don’t work out, especially when the couple retire from competition. There have been plenty of marriages of convenience, either for Visas or, back in the day, if one partner was gay, or like Len Goodman and his first wife just to save on hotel room bills! He said in his memoir that once he and his wife stopped training competitively to run her parents dance school (her father had died suddenly) they discovered they didn’t actually have anything in common.
