I'm a bit of a bread maker and always use Dan Lepard recipes - or even when I don't, I use his kneading method. But they never do on Bake Off - is it because they're frightened that Paul won't approve? Or because it takes longer overall - though I'm not sure it does?

Really enjoyed this week's episode and learnt a lot - never realised that splits at the bottom of a loaf or roll meant it was under-proved. Thought most of the showstoppers looked quite unappetizing, apart from Christie's and the Scottish woman's whose name I've temporarily forgotten. Not at all sure about coloured bread! Also shocked at Abbi's departure - had her down as a finalist. And thought Josh should have been Star Baker.

Maireas · 10/10/2023 22:46

Yes, I agree with you, @LaBelleSauvage123

Mistressofnone · 11/10/2023 06:54

Cristy's showstopper looked amazing!

Felt Dan's pain when he realised he had forgotten the caster sugar.

Found Abbi so arrogant! 'Failure corner' to Rowan when he actually got ok flavour comments.

Saku makes me smile every time she speaks.

Ellmau · 11/10/2023 08:14

I think Dan survived mainly because he had been so good previously, which sucks for Abbie.

MapleSyrupWaffles · 11/10/2023 10:39

Just watched it and really surprised about Abbie! She has done a lot of good things. I though it would be Rowan for his breads this week, or Matty as they were critical of his, or Dana/Christie who just don't really stand out somehow.

I did think Dan was at risk really as he had three not great ones this week so I'm surprised. Abbie had a lot of interesting things. I'd like both of them to have stayed and someone else to go.

Noel seems to be flirty with a couple of contestants

Not surprised about Tasha, but I didn't like the look of hers all that much personally. I guess it was good though. The tiger was more visually appealing to me.

MapleSyrupWaffles · 11/10/2023 10:41

Oh maybe I've got some of the names mixed up. The basket one didn't look great to me. Maybe Christie was fine.

Graciebobcat · 11/10/2023 10:43

Nonsense. She had failed herself and was empathising.

I was also very surprised that it wasn't Dan after quite a big fuck up on the show stopper, although I do like him and think he is capable of more.

WhatapityWapiti · 11/10/2023 10:50

I think that Scottish Nicky had a very lucky escape and surprised she wasn’t in the running for leaving- her cottage loaf was inedible due to all the extra salt, she was middling in the technical and the Highland Cow looked good but they said the flavours were rubbish.

She’ll be gone soon I think. I’d have bet on her going sooner than Abi. She is fun to watch though, even though I am Scottish and don’t say “horrins”.

CatLoaf · 11/10/2023 11:56

Listening to the Dundee twang from Nicky makes me grin, she's dead funny.
I didn't much like Abbie (obvs just from the tiny bit presented on GBBO, I'm sure she's lovely - having a baker's relative on this thread has made me extra aware of not sounding like a twat about them!), but I was surprised she went - don't think it was deserved! Although dock seed flour 😬

CatLoaf · 11/10/2023 11:57

I don't say horrins either @WhatapityWapiti, but apparently the way I say 'twirl' is similar - according to DH 😏

FawnDrench · 10/10/2023 20:20

All a bit too try-hard for me with all these different ingredients and flavours.
It's a "simple" loaf so should have simple flavours in my very humble opinion.
Still, we shall see..

If you don't like "try-hard", maybe Bake Off isn't the programme for you? Absolutely no-one is going to fight all that competition to get into the final 12 and then just throw together a basic loaf. And they wouldn't last two minutes if they did. "Try-hard" is kind of the whole point!

cheshirecatssmile · 10/10/2023 21:25

Sad to see my little brother so deflated

I was watching thinking - Dan can't go, it would be too tough for cheshirecat!

He did have a shocker of a week but even though they don't officially take past performance into account, they would have been mad to chuck him out at this stage because he clearly has so much to offer. They'd be happy to do a Jurgen style chucking under the bus later for the drama though! Glad he hung on in there but sad to see Abi go.

AnImaginaryCat · 11/10/2023 17:21

I think there were a few who could have gone. Abbie/Abby/Abi (?) Just drew the short straw.

I've never made bread. Might try the recipe posted above - though I need a new oven first!!!

Ellmau · 11/10/2023 08:14

Yes, I don't think that's fair. Dan should definitely have gone.

Ellmau · 11/10/2023 18:26

Mind you, they actually said, we're going to judge this on the plaiting not the bread, and then judged it on the bread...

cheshirecatssmile · 12/10/2023 09:09

Don't worry about making brash comments about Dan, I can take it.
His last message to me was

Well the only way is up for me from last night can’t do any worse or it’s curtains! Do I pull myself together for chocolate week that’s the big question!

Find out next wednesday. He's met up with Saku and Nicky as well , friends for life

REP22 · 12/10/2023 12:18

I'm glad Dan didn't go this week - I felt that events conspired against him and it would have been very unfair.

I suspect Rowan is on borrowed time though. A shame because he seems a real sweetie.

Rowan is great value- his comments about the Amalfi Coast were absolutely hilarious.

lancashirebornandbred · 12/10/2023 13:25

I felt that part of the reason Abbie went was because they had already eliminated two men, so they wanted it to be a woman to go this week. I didn’t think Abbie was the worst.

TallulahG · 12/10/2023 15:23

Really enjoying this series and glad they're not doing stupidly impossible unheard of things.

I thought it would be Dan going over Abby, but she deserved to go for saying to Rowan 'failures corner'- that was mean!

He must be enjoying playing with people's minds, knowing perfectly well whether he goes up or down etc but trying not to give it away!!

Did they really film them one every weekend, or was it loads of days actually together and they just pretended? Because you could surely work out how far he got by thinking about when you met up or had lots of contact or whatever those weekends! (Or has he secretly told you yet how long he lasted...?)

WhatapityWapiti · 12/10/2023 15:45

Pretty sure he’d face serious legal action if he told anyone who had not signed an NDA (like their Mum did). Bake Off is huge business, you don’t treat the confidentiality obligation as just a formality.

Maireas · 12/10/2023 17:28

Is anyone making brash comments about Dan? I think some of us thought maybe he was a bit lucky to be saved over Abbie. Nothing personal, it's all about the baking.

Romeiswheretheheartis · 12/10/2023 18:51

Yes, he was the first person I've ever heard say they'd never want to go back to the beautiful Amalfi coast!

I am really enjoying this series. They all seem such lovely people, and are so talented! Even to get into the show is a huge achievement.
