Sanditon Series 3 - ITVx

IwantToRetire · 18/08/2023 17:55

I see that series 3 of Sanditon is now available on ITVx https://www.itv.com/watch/sanditon/2a6094/2a6094a0015

I've watch the first 2 episode but find the ad breaks so long that it breaks the "spell" of going along with the nonsense. ie each episode is billed as 1hour but actually takes 1:15

Wondered what anyone else thought.

Am thinking I will wait for it to be broadcast on ITV1 so that I can record and then fast forward through the ads.

There is a 'watch without ads' option on mine, and it seems to cost £5.99 a month, like Britbox last year. At present I am putting up with the ads.

IwantToRetire · 19/08/2023 00:22

Thanks, maybe I will if I can do a month at a time.

Have found this quite useful just staying a month with one service, have a binge of what looks interesting and then move on.

I think it is more the ads are such a contrast to the style and pace of Sanditon they somehow seem more jarring!

The ads are awful. I actually watched it on PBS in March and I have the dvd so I could watch that but I wanted to see how much ITV cut out this time (S2 had some really annoying cuts) but so far ( I'm half way through) there don't seem to be any. The ads are so abrupt!

There's a discussion under the S2 heading in here, we just carried on with that thread.

I think ITVX do a one month free trial on ad free, that would help.

I think that is why it is so long, ie each episode is an hour plus 15 minutes of ads.

Which now make me think when they show it on ITV 1 channel there probably will be terrible cuts. ie they will have to loose 15 minutes so that it fits in a hour slot. hmmmm . so may have to stick with ITVx.

I think I may have used that up on something else I cant even remember. Unfortunately they keep records of your sign up email / debit card. Have been caught out trying to get a second free month.

So should have said have found it okay it a light undemanding way. Interesting scenery clothes etc..

And I think that I am not finding it so annoying this time that they flag up "issues" that are a bit 21st century, as they do fit in with plot development.

And quite liking the new characters. I think its good to have new faces. Was surprised that James Bolam suited his part so well.

The first two episodes on ITVX seemed to be about 52 minutes of time on the time-line, and the little ball on the line stops while the infernal ads come on, so I am just putting up with them for the time being. I sent an e-mail to ITV to ask if they are putting out a dvd, and if so, when. They replied that they aren't but BBC have the dvd rights. I think those were their words. I haven't investigated further.

I like the scene of the brothers sitting with their legs and boots on show.

I am glad that BLH wasn't Edward or Lord Bab. That's easy to say, knowing what I/we know now.😀

upinaballoon · 19/08/2023 09:20

@StarbucksSmarterSister , thank you for reporting to us that you haven't found any cuts yet, in the ITVX version.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 19/08/2023 10:50

Interesting that BBC has the dvd rights, I know BBC Studios distributed it in some countries. Maybe that will mean no cuts? A friend in America sent me my dvd.

I think it's done very well. Of course gay men existed and had to be as discreet as possible and I believe Jane Austen must have loosely based Miss Lambe on Dido Belle who grew up at Kenwood (Jane's brother was a friend of Dido's cousin Elizabeth). Who knows what she'd have done with the character if she'd lived to finish the book, but we could say that about every character of course.

Definitely although I think he'd have been excellent as either. But the casting ended up being absolutely perfect.

Parky04 · 19/08/2023 11:13

You can fast forward the advert breaks.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 19/08/2023 11:26

Not on mine, I've tried! Can't FF them on C4 OD either.

Interesting to know that Jane's brother was a friend of Dido's cousin. Dido and the possible inspiration for Miss Lambe were discussed on Reddit last year and Dido was definitely mentioned but I never read a post which pointed out that Jane's brother was a friend of her cousin. (Lovely film - Belle - ?)

re 21st Century issues - I think I was thinking for of women's rights and women thinking independently and so on. It seems less clunky. And in fact now wonder if it is because it is no longer written by Andrew Davies. The first series dialogue was almost parody and it was like he was trying to make us all feel silly for having enjoyed his earlier tv adaptation of classics.

re length of programme - I just went by the listing, and realised that after watching 2 episodes back to back it had been nearly 2.5 hours. So maybe when the get it on ITV the cuts wont be so dramatic. I know watching series 2 on ITV it felt quite odd at times until someone on the thread here explained.

re FF - as far as I know you cant on ITVx. That is the whole point of them going on line to stop people like me recording programmes and whizzing through the ad breaks. And why if you pay to watch ITVx you dont get ads.

Interesting to know that Jane's brother was a friend of Dido's cousin.

It's in one of Paula Byrne's books. Apparently Jane's letters showed that she wasn't over impressed with Elizabeth. Presumably neither of them ever met Dido herself.

Well AD isn't always known for his subtlety. 😁 He did write part of S2 but perhaps the cancellation after S1 caused him to rein it in a bit.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 19/08/2023 20:28

I just want to say that I think the costumes and the cinematography (especially the beach scenes such as this one) in S3 are glorious.

IwantToRetire · 20/08/2023 00:53

Agree about the beach scenes some of them look like paintings.

Or make you realise that paintings you (well I) thought are a romanticised version of life, are actually accurate records!

If I dare go back to S1 and Sidney, 😑, there was a lovely evening scene when Tom and Mary and Charlotte and Sidney walked on the sands.

Just think, some evenings CC and AC stroll there with Leo and Augusta now.

IwantToRetire · 20/08/2023 15:53

Has anyone got to the end as I would like to ask a question?

Was Sir Edward Denham really "good" and lied to give Augusta a way out?

And did he become a clergyman?

I thought the last scene was totally naff and not necessary!

  1. You decide but probably because he knew he didn't deserve her ( a slight redemption)
  2. Yes.
  3. You mean when they met her after school? We all thought it was fabulous!
StarbucksSmarterSister · 20/08/2023 17:44

One thing friends and I really didn't like was cramming in so many storylines particularly Rowleigh (who we didn't like much) and Lady Denham. It took time away from the main stories. I understand that in order to get certain people on board/returning they had to give them decent storylines. Of course if we had 8 episodes as in the first series this wouldn't have been an issue.

That said I think it's a lovely overall and have watched each series a number of times already.

upinaballoon · 20/08/2023 17:51

I've only watched 2 complete episodes of S3 so far. I have seen umpteen short pieces from all 6 episodes before, but I hadn't seen the opera singer introducing her song or the camera pan round the faces of the listening women. I was quite touched by that.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 20/08/2023 17:54

Upinaballoon - or anyone else.

Part of the aria is

"Oh Love relieve my grief and give me consolation“ and „Give me my beloved back or let me die“
