Anyone watching?

Loved the first episode, especially the intro which echoed the film’s intro.

Like Destiny as a character very much. And pleased theyre touching on difficult subjects

Anyone? I binged watched and need to talk about it 😂

Ooooh is that on now? I've got that on my list of things I want to watch

I read the story with Hugo Speer in the DM talking about him being given the boot. If his version is correct, that sounds horrendous

I read it too and I’m a bit sceptical. They wouldn’t sack a key character over so little.

The show is amazing, a total masterpiece bjt get the tissues out - I blubbed like a baby at certain episodes.

I suspect there's a mix of truths in there.

For example, scenario a: If he was getting changed in his own trailer and someone walked in, is it fair to accuse the person getting changed of flashing?

But scenario b, someone walking in and having a conversation, and then the person deciding to get changed in front of you is inappropriate

The whole thing sounded very odd.

Cocolapew · 15/06/2023 11:55

I looking forward to this, I've been in love with Robert Carlyle since Hamish McBeth 😆

Gothambutnotahamster · 15/06/2023 11:56

I thought the same @thebellagio - something about the story didn't ring true and the fact that it happened with more than one individual sounded suspicious as how unlucky do you have to be to be continually interrupted in your trailer with no clothes on!

I want to watch the series but the Hugo story put me off a little. I might watch it now that you've given it a thumbs up!

notsuchafrugalkitty · 15/06/2023 19:29

I've just sobbed my way through the last episode. I've really enjoyed the series......I was skeptical but I think it's worked really well. It's not meant to be a serious representation of life and one or two bits are a bit daft, but I don't care. It's a hit for me.

storminamooncup · 15/06/2023 19:29

I've finished it. It was brilliant. Loved it. Perfect sequel and hope they do another series. I also love Robert Carlyle (as I'm a Scot).
No spoilers, but I'm pissed off with Dave!

I agree.

I think if you’re looking for a lighthearted comedy it wouldn’t fit the bill.

Bjt the final episode, with the subject matter + the music + flashbacks was epic cinematography.

What I loved: The Kurdish migrants story, the new characters, the Revenge Choir and the young people. The woman playing Destiny is insanely talented. The job centre episode.

I’d have like to have seen more of Gerald, he was basically an extra. Would have also liked to see a conclusion to Guy’s story and also more of Nathan.

I’m also pleased that, unlike other revamps, it didn’t go down the woke road. It showed real, important issues and struggles and we don’t often see that in TV shows.

Oh really! I forgot to add to my last post I didn’t like Jean this series, what an up-herself cow! She was very different to the film version.

LifeIsPainHighness · 15/06/2023 19:43

But also Jean looks 100x better than she did 25 years ago! Loved her clothes.

Loved Hetty too. I want to be Hetty’s friend 🤣

I agree. It dealt with some serious and current issues without being preachy. I hope they do another season. I know Hugo Spear (?) was fired so they needed to rejig his story so I assume another series might give that a better ending.

MichaelAndEagle · 18/06/2023 21:55

I'm watching and loving it so far!!

LifeIsPainHighness · 18/06/2023 22:03

I am actually re-watching it 🤣 the only thing I found quite jarring was Horse is clearly well above state pension age, he wouldn’t be made to work!

OP posts:
MichaelAndEagle · 18/06/2023 22:12

Yes. And I didn't think they could sack a teacher just like that.... but I might be wrong. I got the point that Jean had tough decisions to make, lack of school funding etc.

ohfook · 18/06/2023 22:13

Im only 2 episodes in. The only thing that's annoyed me so far (although it might be rectified later) is I work in schools and see the ramifications of budget cuts - in particular the hellish rounds of redundancies where people have to compete for points on a skills matrix. It takes months and if not handled well, ends up pitting staff against each other for the sake of a couple of points. The head can't just decide they can't afford a particular department then literally make the teacher redundant that same day!

Well teachers are highly unionised so I doubt it would be that easy too - but I guess filmmakers have to take artistic liberties now and again

I’m watching, about halfway through.
It’s ok, but I feel it’s shoehorning so many social issues in that it’s coming across as lecturing.
I loved the original film, which of course focused on the issues of the time, but it was funny and light hearted at the same time, and so feel
good at the same time. It’s a relief it hasn’t gone down the woke route, as so many series do now, but to be honest it would fit in with the tone of what I’ve watched so far.
Full Monty as a series isn’t doing this for me. Lines I know are supposed to be funny massively miss the mark.

So far I’m finding this quite relentless and depressing. Not bad enough to stop watching, but I do hope there’s an upturn in the next few episodes!

storminamooncup · 20/06/2023 18:07

It ticks loads of woke boxes and was a big annoying at times. Woke for wokes sake.

Horse could work if state pension not enough. It's also accurate about disability benefits assessment

vestanesta · 20/06/2023 21:50

Just finished it tonight.

Some of it I loved. The revenge choir, Destiny (that girl is a real find), Hetty and Dennis.

Some of it was a bit worthy and 'issues'. I fell asleep in a couple of episodes. Overall I did enjoy it though

@storminamooncup - why annoyed with Dave?

storminamooncup · 21/06/2023 05:52

Cause he forgives his missus. Get her to fuck! He deserves better!

vestanesta · 21/06/2023 07:10

Ahhhhhhh ok! Yes I see that.

Hiddendoor · 21/06/2023 19:16

I'm on episode 3 and struggling a bit with Gaz. Was he always such a grifter? I maybe should have rewatched the film first but I can't remember his character being on the make so much.
