SPOILER alert!
I really enjoyed it. There was a lot wrong with it. The plot jumped about a lot and I think an episode per character might have worked better.
There were ridiculously implausible parts like the school falling apart, sacking the teacher just like that, Korean man moving in with Lumper and husband, the debt collectors seemed to just disappear, kid in foster care for taking an overdose, the finale which whilst beautiful and emotional would never have happened.
There were the usual police procedural issues and Nathan would firstly never have passed vetting in the first place due to his fathers criminal history and still being in contact with him and as an inspector would hardly ever shift his arse out operationally so often!
I loved the job centre siege - silly but British humour at its best! I agree Horse was way past retirement age (he was over 50 in the film) but I got what the writers were trying to achieve and show about the Britain we live in today. And the realisation his pride about not accepting charity while starving was greater than his ability to accept it.
I didn't really care about Jean that much. Her and Dilip did seem an unlikely match but stranger things happen in real life.
While I think the actor playing Destiny was excellent, im not convinced she was needed at all. The side story of her abusive mother and dodgy partners was ok but I think there was a lost opportunity to do something better with her as Gaz's daughter.
The reason I can put all the flaws aside is because (apart from Jean) I liked and cared about the characters. Darren as a new character was just so understated but powerful and he slotted in with the established cast so well. I wonder if that was always the plan or Hugo Speer going created a gap that needed filling. His relationship with Silven was lovely.
It was like meeting up with a load of mates after 25 years and finding out what they were up to and feeling warm and fuzzy despite the flaws.
I think someone mentioned that Tom Wilkinson was a bit part. He's 75 and although only a couple of years older than Paul Barber, he didn't look in the best of health to me.
