Ice Road Truckers - Canada

You know, I forgot how fucking cold it is up there.

No, I didn't live in Canada. I lived in Colorado and had an ex h who liked to ice climb, particularly outside Canmore in winter.

Eyelashes freezing up, sunburnt eyeballs, face gaiter sticking to your face, fogged up ski goggles, plugging in your motor at night, driving over ice.

I forgot about all that!

For a good reason, methinks.

Scary programme!
They're very brave, or very mad, or both.

expatinscotland · 20/02/2008 20:49

It's not bad money, you know?

Notice how some of them used to work in the oil industry?

But that clear, clear cold.

Ooooo. Man, it burns. There's no other way to say it, you don't want to inhale too deeply because the air burns you.

I like their accents.

Yeah, I reckoned the money must be pretty good - danger money, really.
It's really beautiful out there, but soooo scary.

skyatnight · 20/02/2008 21:40

I enjoy this programme. Nothing much happens in it and the men are not particularly good looking but it's fascinating to see what the job involves and how hard and dangerous it is. Plus just nice to watch men and big trucks and ice.

expatinscotland · 20/02/2008 21:45

It is so, so, so beautiful!

I love this and so does eldest manky. I have to record it for him and let him watch it the next day as it's on too late for his bedtime. The scenery is breathtaking, and it's interesting to hear some of the history behind it all. Brings back memories of reading about how the first pioneers would wait til winter then cross lakes and rivers in their covered wagons.

Highlander · 21/02/2008 16:59

I've told DH that if we move back I want to be a trucker. Or work the piste bashers.

expatinscotland · 22/02/2008 20:57

m'm confused!

ss this show on, different episodes, more than once a week??

saw one on wed. now there's another on friday?

was i watching a repeat?

OP posts:
pedilia · 22/02/2008 21:00

DH keeps threatning to go and do this, we own a haulage comapny here so he seems to think that qualifies him

expatinscotland · 22/02/2008 21:01

it probably does, ped. i don't know what Canadian laws are like, but it's possible he could use his UK lorry license there - not sure. there are some Canadians around, though.

OP posts:
pedilia · 22/02/2008 21:02

expat- don't tell him that
thing he complains when we get a frost so not sure he would last long there!

expatinscotland · 22/02/2008 21:04

oh, no, that is cold. it really does hurt to breathe sometimes in that.

and your hair freezes to your hat if you move round and sweat, your eyelashes freeze just with your own blinks, your breath freezes.

it's really beautiful, though.

I have to watch through my fingers. I want to yell, get off the ice you lunatics, it's CR A C K I N G.

But addictive also, like Deadliest Catch. Just how many times can you watch a crab pot swing on board a boat? Hundreds. And I have the hots for Sig too. And that one where the bloke fell off the other boat and they scooped him out of the water and saved his life.

expatinscotland · 22/02/2008 21:09

DH is addicted.

he records it if he is working.

OP posts:
Kbear · 22/02/2008 21:11

expat - can I ask you something? Bit personal, but not embarrassingly so...!

expatinscotland · 22/02/2008 21:11

sure! i can always not answer .

OP posts:
cremolafoam · 22/02/2008 21:12

dh makes m watch this.he likes it cos it reminds him of FARGO. the accents and kinda funnylookin blokes.
how they thought this could be more than 1 episode long is beyond me

expatinscotland · 22/02/2008 21:13

Fargo was nothing like these dudes driving lorries across ice though!

it was on the US/Canada border, though.

OP posts:
Kbear · 22/02/2008 21:14

Just this really... what brought you to Scotland and how did you meet your DH? I've read snippets about you over the months (ok years) I've been on MN and I am intrigued!!

expatinscotland · 22/02/2008 21:16

i'd been here before on a holiday and liked it. no real reason why. i'd lived in france before and i'm not really sure why i didn't go there first, especially as i know people there.

OP posts:
WingsofanAngel · 22/02/2008 21:16

Dh likes Ice road truckers,he is impressed there is a thread on MN about it.

expatinscotland · 22/02/2008 21:18

it's more popular than i thought!

i thought i was the only one watching it.

OP posts:
Kbear · 22/02/2008 21:22

I see. I thought you might have met DH in US and come back here to live.

(Why am I pondering your life? )

WingsofanAngel · 22/02/2008 21:25

You are not alone,we also have Deadliest catch.
