Carry on with Succession?

I've tried watching it twice and got to episode 3, I get that we're not supposed to like any of the family, but I'm struggling to get into it at all.

The brother wanking in the office, and the dad being pervy with the daughter when she visits him 😳

I keep seeing it on lists of best ever TV shows, and I've watched a lot of shows that have more sex/violence than this one so I'm not a prude - but does it get better after the first few episodes?

I started with the final season (as my boyfriend watches it and he likes having someone to watch with him and go ohhhhhh -and heck he gets into married at first sight for me!)

They start horrible and end up horrible people. But I do mostly enjoy it and the sarky remarks by others and how deluded the main 3 are.

Gpnever · 23/05/2023 14:15

I would. But then I think it’s really good. I also struggled at the beginning with my visceral hatred for Roman, especially.

i think if you like shows like the thick of it, then keep going as it’s similar and v funny

TiredandLate · 23/05/2023 21:05

I'll give it a couple more episodes. I watch almost anything so surprised I'm not enjoying it.

I’m with you. I really expected to enjoy it (and I’ve enjoyed shows where I didn’t like the main characters before) but I only managed two episodes. I think it’s rubbish and don’t understand the hype. Each to their own though.

User565394 · 23/05/2023 21:09

I haven't managed to watch much either. I don't like anyone, I can't figure out the details of all the business dealings, I can't follow the political stuff with Shiv, I get some of the peripheral male characters all mixed up. Too many similar looking men in suits.

007DoubleOSeven · 23/05/2023 21:11

You could give it another episode maybe but if you haven't got into it by then you won't at all. They're all vile people but that's kind of why it draws you in, that and watching them struggle with their humanity when it pops up.

Bilingualspingual · 24/05/2023 09:22

I’m with you. I struggled through three episodes and then gave up. I just didn’t see what other people were seeing. Life’s too short and it’s just a taste thing.

Damnspot · 24/05/2023 09:24

I found the same as you but then the character of Kendal drew me in. Tbh there are a lot of quite boring episodes at the beginning of the seasons

EachandEveryone · 24/05/2023 09:26

You need subtitles on without a doubt. I dont think great tv necessarily draws ypu straight in. I was tye same with the Wire but so glad I perservered.

ILoveToSquanderPromise · 24/05/2023 09:29

I watched the first episode without subtitles and gave up. Watched it again with subtitles and got to ep 2 and gave up. Recently got as far as ep 3 and had to give up again as it's just a lot of shouty people in suits.

ILoveMyBedTooMuch · 24/05/2023 09:31

Just can't get on with this new season - same old stuff...

Lottapianos · 24/05/2023 09:34

I know a few people who didn't get it at all. I think if you aren't drawn in from the beginning, then it's not for you. Yes they are horrible people but there's much more to it than that. We are all interested in different things. If it's a struggle to watch, then ditch it

YukoandHiro · 24/05/2023 09:34

Yes! You really should.

Same, bored of it. Watched until a certain event happened and can't be arsed anymore, might binge the last few episodes if everyone raves about the finale.

I'd agree with this. It's fine not to like something even if the world and his wife are raving about it.

I absolutely adore Succession. I'm not sure why. Smart writing, top acting, sure. Lots of shows have those. But something about it feels so uniquely immersive to me. I've watched the whole lot twice and I know it's one of those shows I'll watch again and again and not get bored.

On the other hand, I couldn't get into The Wire, even though I could see it was objectively very good. My DH loves it and harangued me into watching it, but it just wasn't really for me. That's fine.

I found the West Wing pretty meh too... (awaits flaming) 🫣🙂

Lottapianos · 24/05/2023 09:57

'But something about it feels so uniquely immersive to me'

Immersive - that's such a good description of how it feels to watch if you love it. In certain episodes, I really felt like I had lived through that day's events with them. Most of the characters are raging narcissists, and I have a lot of experience with narcissists in my family, so a lot of it feels familiar! Just without the private jets and humungous apartments 😁

JuneShitfield · 24/05/2023 10:01

I didn't take to it. It's clearly of exceptional quality, both in terms of acting and production. Lots of people love it. But it's not my bag, personally. I need at least one semi-sympathetic character, I've discovered. I had the same problem with White Lotus.

TheOGCCL · 24/05/2023 10:11

Yeah I mean it pretty much carries on just like this. I’m very bored by the current series. You get some nice one liners but all the business talk is too much for me and it’s incredibly repetitive.

DeadwoodStage · 24/05/2023 10:16

@TiredandLate same here, watched up until the brother wanked against his office window. That was it for me. Couldn’t watch Game of Thrones because of rape/incest yuck. No idea how so many people watch vile stuff on tv, I have nightmares if I try.

mondaytosunday · 24/05/2023 10:20

I love it. This weeks episode was epic in every way. But not everyone loves the same thing - there was that show a couple years ago people were saying was the best thing since TV was invented and I thought it was awful.
I recommend You (Netflix) to anyone needing a reality suspension series.
Bloodline is also brilliant (Netflix too, not sure if still available, but also about a dysfunctional famiy).

rookiemere · 24/05/2023 12:08

I think it's amazing, but my friend couldn't get past the first couple of episodes. Maybe the issue is there is no one to really root for as all the characters are fundamentally flawed.

SapatSea · 24/05/2023 12:18

I've tried twice - 2 episodes with DH when it started and most of the first series this week (I've had a rotten cold and wanted a binge watch). I just have the final episode to go and I can't be bothered - they are all so awful and I don't find it funny or illuminating in any way. I liked early stuff by Jesse Armstrong when he was writing with Sam bain such as Peep Show and Fresh Meat. Kendall is the only one I'm even vaguely interested in now. Life's too short - I'm done.

I've had the same experience with For All Mankind - should be right up my street and a Ronald D Moore series but I've tried 3 times and nah, doesn't connect.

refreshingseahorse · 24/05/2023 12:53

Isn't the dad inappropriate because he's just had a stroke and is not cognitively all there? I'm not sure that's the same as 'pervy'.

I'd not seen any of it, then decided to watch the entire season run over the last month and really enjoyed it. I think you have to enjoy the kind of writing where you repeatedly start to feel sorry for someone and then they do something awful and you have to figure out how you feel about it, and it's a bit of a headfuck . If you don't it's probably not for you.

burnoutbabe · 24/05/2023 14:23

I as the same with the wire, kept struggling with it as people said "oh you get to episode 6/7 and it's amazing" but I just didn't enjoy it

Sane with west wing-objectively brilliant but. Too dense for me. Also mad men.

Breaking bad didn't appeal due to subject matter.
