New series on Disney+ telling the story of Ann Frank from the perspective of Miep Gies, the Dutch woman who helped the Frank family. I'm two episodes in and really enjoying. Beautiful scenes in Amsterdam and Miep is a remarkable character.

Just finished it today and I going to tell everyone I know to watch it. It was beautifully and respectfully done. Am lost for words actually...

That's how I feel too. It was fantastic and deserves a wider audience.

We finished it last night, best thing I've watched in ages!

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 24/05/2023 22:44

We finished it today. I cried a lot.

I can only echo what the rest of your are saying, beautifully done. Respectful. Definitely one of the best things I've seen in a long time.

It really was brilliant. I hadn’t really thought of it before but the psychological resilience of all of them managing to live there for 2 years and not go out - perhaps it is because it is the first time j have watched a film/Tv about holocaust since Covid when I found having to stay indoors so awful. They had to do it for 2 years….poor Edith Frank’s struggles - really excellently but succinctly portrayed.

it was also the minor characters - Liddy and Alfred, the baby in the drawer, the passing of the baby to safety when a tram went past - all that bravery. And then occasionally you saw chinks in Nazi armour - because of course it always astounds me thinking about how one evil man managed to brainwash an entire nation with his ideology. How much of it was driven by real belief? How much by fear? The nazi who returned Liddy and Alfred. Maybe he fell into latter.

Anne was beautifully portrayed, as was Margot - all of them. I loved how Anne just adored Miep and it was obviously highlight of her day when Miep came to deliver food etc.

it will stay with me for a long time…and I hope it wins lots of awards. Nothing on TV compares at the moment.

Finished this today. Beautifully done. I really think anyone, especially younger teens, should watch this. I really brings it all home in a modern way. I found the whole idea of them living together for 2 years or so just so fascinating - I mean obviously I knew the story well beforehand anyway but I think since covid and the lockdowns it made it all more interesting. Just the sheer bravery of so many people. Best thing I’ve seen in ages.

Finished this evening. Obviously you know how it ends… and as I was watching it I almost didn’t want the ending to happen. But it does. It’s heartbreaking and I cried my eyes out. A brilliant series I will be telling everyone to watch.

I’ve just finished it, too. It was beautifully done and so moving at the end, despite knowing the outcome from the beginning. Each character was so well portrayed - from studious Margot, vivacious Anne and dignified Otto, to the bravery and tenacity shown by Miep. I haven’t watched anything so compelling in a long time.

Eight episodes. I watched the last two today as feeling under the weather and lying on the sofa. Cried a lot.

Here's the real Miep. She loved to be 100.

The Frank Family were {it's thought most likely }were betrayed by a Dutch Nurse who pretended to be working for the Resistance.

What a shocking thing to do.

GreenClock · 01/07/2024 17:10

This is on the Drama channel now. It’s absolutely brilliant. One of the best series I’ve ever seen.

Miep’s book is great too, for those who are interested.

I'm going to rewatch with my 12 year old - it was superb!

SpeedwellBlue · 24/09/2024 13:51

Bit late to this, but I'm half way through and this is excellent.

@blessedarethequichemakers Thank you for recommending this, it sounds just the sort of thing I would enjoy. Will need to sign up to Disney Plus but wondered if anyone has any other recommendations so I can make the most of my membership Smile

Hels20 · 24/09/2024 20:12

The Americans on Disney is also good. But A Small Light is worth the subscription cost for Disney alone. It is an amazing series.

From me I’d recommend:

Mr Inbetween (starts slowly, becomes compelling)
Under the banner of Heaven
The old Man
Dopesick
The Dropout
The Patient
Candy
The Bear (stick with it, same as Mr Inbetween)

@Netaporter @Hels20 Thank you so much, will look forward to working my way through these
