New series on Disney+ telling the story of Ann Frank from the perspective of Miep Gies, the Dutch woman who helped the Frank family. I'm two episodes in and really enjoying. Beautiful scenes in Amsterdam and Miep is a remarkable character.

I'm really enjoying it too. It's just incredible that some people were so willing to help like that. Would I have been brave enough to help at such great risk to myself? I honestly don't know.

Tree543 · 11/05/2023 08:46

I've watched the first three and am enjoying it too. It feels quite modern, which took me 10 minutes or so to get used to but I think does work quite well. I love the Miep character think the actor is great. So difficult trying to find food for all those people and to lie all the time. I'm a bit confused though about how Otto Frank owned a company appeared to flee to Switzerland and the employees just carried on running his company.

Yes I wondered about that too. It's made me want to return to other sources on the story to find out more. I was fascinated by Ann Frank as a child and very moved when I visited the house in Amsterdam.

I'm loving it too. It's very human, showing Anne having the usual teenage drama is very relatable and Meip is charming as well as very brave.

This is amazing. On episode 4 now. Has had me choked up many times. I thought her husband was going to get done but then it all worked out well. What bravery all those people showed. And how do you live in a city where you just feel all the authorities are morally reprehensible. That scene with Liddy and Alfred asking Miep why she didn’t have to worry when they were in the living room in their grandmother’s house and Frannie replying “it’s because she isn’t Jewish” made me sob. Beautifully acted. Gripping. Even though I know the terrible outcome.

I wonder how much of Miep’s back story here is true. That scene with Jan finding the “papers”” in that abandoned house…did that really happen?

blessedarethequichemakers · 16/05/2023 07:36

I'm impatiently waiting for the next one. Think it might drop today.

I know what you mean about the package in the drawer, I want to know if that is fiction too. I'm going to see if I can find anything about her at the library.

Binged episodes five and six. A hard watch in places. I'm on the hunt for ww2 Dutch resistance stories now if anyone has recommendations.

I bawled when Willem Arondeus statement was delivered. Loved that character and the actor was stunning. Am dreading what state I’ll be in in the next episodes. Still holding out hope even when you know the outcome. Brilliant writing

Hels20 · 17/05/2023 09:35

This is quite simply the best thing I have watched in a long time. Not sure I can watch the last 2 episodes. What amazing people Jan and Miep were - and so many.

User565394 · 17/05/2023 11:51

I've watched episode 5 but not 6 yet.

I can't get over how long this went on. Not just a month or so but actual years. Imagine doing that day after day after day for all that time. Its just amazing.

How the family kept sane in hiding all that time, how the helpers managed to keep going and not get caught all that time, I just can't fathom it at all.

I wonder how I would have reacted in that situation, would I have helped? Would I have helped for all that time? How would I have taken care of myself and my family if I was in hiding? I can't imagine.

Human beings can be so amazing, can't they.

blessedarethequichemakers · 17/05/2023 12:26

They must have been under prolonged levels of stress. Yet they kept going because they knew it was the right thing to do. I hope after what happened Miep and her colleagues didn't feel that it was all for nothing. Their bravery and compassion lives on and inspires.

Have you watched Willem and Frieda? Think it's on All 4.

blessedarethequichemakers · 18/05/2023 17:42

No - I'll look thanks!

Caught up on all so far. It’s such an emotional watch! I keep remembering how it all ends and it’s so upsetting.

Netaporter · 20/05/2023 23:13

We are watching this as a family. Utterly compelling watch even though we think we know the story already. I hope I’d have been as brave in the same circumstances.

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 20/05/2023 23:23

I think this is one of the best things I've watched in a long time. Miep (and Jan, Bep etc) were so brave.

User565394 · 23/05/2023 14:18

The final 2 episodes are out now. I really want to watch them and really don't at the same time. They managed for so long, they were so nearly there.

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 23/05/2023 14:21

How many episodes are there? I've read 6, 8 and 10 Confused

blessedarethequichemakers · 23/05/2023 15:09

Eight episodes. I watched the last two today as feeling under the weather and lying on the sofa. Cried a lot.

Here's the real Miep. She loved to be 100.

@blessedarethequichemakers where are you getting access to all of them from? I’m watching on Disney and it seems to be 1x a week?

Epictantrum · 23/05/2023 18:39

There are 2 released each week, they are all on Disney plus now.

We've been betting 2 per week as well but not at home so didn't know the last 2 were out.

Gooseysgirl · 24/05/2023 18:14

Just finished it today and I going to tell everyone I know to watch it. It was beautifully and respectfully done. Am lost for words actually...
