Anyone watching?

Mostly British cast playing Americans

2 episodes in and already several departures from the books I'm unsure about

Oh finally other people who are watching! I've not read the books but am enjoying it, tho it's slow in parts. The lack of colour and light is very depressing after a while. Great cast, looking forward to ep 10 but expecting no conclusions given what you've all said

I’m really enjoying it but agree with PP about Jules‘ accent.

DH read the books many moons ago and doesn’t seem overly bothered by the departures from the books.

Rebecca is Swedish.

ellebelli · 03/07/2023 09:47

Enjoyed this but don't understand it.
Does jules survive?
Are all those silos?
Why make them believe the earth was beautiful if it wasn't?
Can anyone explain some things or will that ruin things going forward into a 2nd series?

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 03/07/2023 10:20

@ellebelli

So Season Two should cover how the Silos were built Yes you are correct about there being more.

The "display" was to fool people who went out to clean

Juliet didn't die for a specific reason

They are about as close to our era as we are to say The Tudor times or the Georgian era so that's why old relics of the time before are shrouded in mystery

Judicial and IT preserve the status quo so that everyone thinks there never was a Before. The Silo has a rule book called The Pact about this.

OP posts:
EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 03/07/2023 10:21

I do think they needed to be more clear about how it all works - it's really clear in the book

OP posts:
noblegiraffe · 03/07/2023 10:27

The display was lovely to get the people who went out to clean to actually do the cleaning.

The Silo needs the cameras cleaned regularly to show how crap the outside world is, but cleaners wouldn’t clean if they didn’t think there was something new/different people needed to see.

The heat tape which was referred to many times and was featured significantly in the end scene is important.

ellebelli · 03/07/2023 11:25

I get the Heat tape was why she didn't drop dead..I'm just wondering if she is featured in the 2nd book(series) I liked her character and would hope so.
However she had the strongest arms and grip known to man,the amount of times she was swinging one handed made me roll my eyes!(she really did have impressive arms though)
Thank you to you both its cleared up a few things bugging me.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 03/07/2023 11:41

Yes, she will be in S2 but there will be a lot of new faces

There are books!?
I've just finished the season, does this mean I can read the books rather than wait for them to make season 2?

APurpleSquirrel · 03/07/2023 11:46

We watched this - was slow but enjoyed it, & interesting twists at the end re the display.
Not read the books btw.
The tape was very significant as it clearly meant her suit was airtight so she didn't asphyxiate from the toxic air. Others who'd gone out to clean clearly had been given subpar tape knowing they eventually succumb & die on camera thus perpetuating the narrative that it's death to go outside.
Really looking forward to the next series & the new silos, & how that interaction works.
Might check out the books too.

ChocBananaSmoothie · 03/07/2023 11:53

I suspect she is going to go towards the city. Haven't read the books. Looking forward to season 2. All those silos are way too close together given the size of them underground.

@EineReiseDurchDieZeit this is brilliant news! Thanks so much 😁

ChocBananaSmoothie · 03/07/2023 12:03

Which book picks up where the series ends?

Shift

But I really would recommend reading Wool first due to the differences between book and show

PrincessTigger · 03/07/2023 13:02

I have listened to the first 2 audiobooks (the accents are actually worse than the TV show lol) and really enjoyed. Not read the 3rd one yet. I really liked the TV series and thought the deviations from the original were good changes.

noblegiraffe · 03/07/2023 13:28

If the next season follows the books there will be more highly unlikely feats of human endurance coming her way!

SunThroughTheCloudsAt6am · 03/07/2023 13:32

I just read the whole trilogy (read Wool years back, but not the rest until now) - I don't think I should watch it until I've forgotten some of the detail or the differences will annoy me...

Thank you.

ChocBananaSmoothie · 03/07/2023 23:18

OK, I've got Shift on audiobook now.

ChocBananaSmoothie · 03/07/2023 12:03

Which book picks up where the series ends?

Actually season 1 only covers half of the first book (Wool). Season 2 will probably cover the second half.

I haven't read Shift yet but I believe it's a prequel to Wool. Honestly I think you should read Wool first - I've just read it and preferred it to the TV show as the pace is faster, though the TV show fleshes out the characters more and gives Jules more back story

Argh! Wish I knew that before i got up to chapter 12 of Shift. Maybe I'll finish Shift then go back to Wool.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 04/07/2023 10:13

Only just seen this thread, had no idea there was a series - I will tune in with trepidation as I lived the books - hopefully I won’t be disappointed 😁

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 04/07/2023 11:43

@ChocBananaSmoothie @ffauxlivia

Officially it is Book 2 of the trilogy not a prequel it's sold as Book 2. Yes the content starts explaining events before Silo, but I have said a couple of times that reading Wool is still important for explanations that weren't in the show
