New Endeavour series starts tonight

the final 3 (ever) episodes of Endeavour, apparently.

Although I've not enjoyed the stories of the last few as much, I will still be sad to see the end of the entire enterprise, from Morse to Lewis to Endeavour . (Unless they can come up with some new angle!!). I loved watching all the Oxford scenery etc. in Morse and Lewis, and the period drama bit of Endeavour was good - the settings, clothes, details of houses and offices, roles of women, etc.

Blast I've missed most of it.

JaneJeffer · 26/02/2023 21:50

Loving the dramatic violin music Grin

JaneJeffer · 26/02/2023 21:53

This murderer is very masculine looking

midsomermurderess · 26/02/2023 21:55

That was Bruch Violin Concerto No 1. It makes me think of fleeing from revolutionaries through the snow, huddled under furs in a dog-drawn sleigh.

midsomermurderess · 26/02/2023 21:56

The first concert.

JaneJeffer · 26/02/2023 21:57

It sounds like the musical expression of my anxiety

Filmbuffmum · 26/02/2023 22:19

Sorry to be difficult, but in case anyone wants to listen to the first concerto, it was Mendelssohn not Bruch- E minor. Currently trying to learn to play it (very slowly and with most of the top notes missing)

Enjoyed tonight's episode. There's such a feeling of sadness to it, knowing Morse will end up alone. Sorry it's coming to an end, though I guess that's inevitable.

Bimbleberries · 26/02/2023 22:22

I enjoyed it, though found much of the orchestra stuff unrealistic! But fits with the whole Morse series style.

I don't like knowing that Morse will be alone, and also that he and Thursday will have fallen out or whatever by the end of the series, as we never hear of him again in the Morse series. It all just seems kind of sad.

I wish they could keep going for a bit longer, but I know it was inevitable that it had to end soon.

I always enjoy looking out for the little side cultural reference in these programmes. This time round the only one I spotted was the name of the orchestra leader, Lermontov. I assume that was intended to refer to the ballet master in The Red Shoes, who had a similarly obsessive relationship with a protegée.

Was the private detective the cop who was a resident in the children's home? I hope they resolve the abuse storyline in this series.

midsomermurderess · 26/02/2023 23:20

Mendelssohn, thank you!

pinkySilver · 26/02/2023 23:24

I feel the same about the end of the series. I love this one, Endeavour, for the period details like OP does. And Roger Allam of whom I'm a huge fan. I also like the pace and the scenery. It's sad, yes, to see Morse and how he becomes the lonely, cross but wonderful character he does in the later series.

This was a better episode than some of the previous ones have been - not so far fetched.

AutisticLegoLover · 26/02/2023 23:25

Gosh, it all feels so sad and lost. Everyone has moved on since Morse went away and he's returned lost when he needed to be found.

thecatsthecats · 27/02/2023 07:11

It's incredible how they manage to make you feel sorry for poor old Endeavour, when really he never made a proper play for Joan. Sleeping with her cousin, then becoming alcoholic over a criminal Italian bint? But he just looks so desolate.

I know what you mean.

Even though I knew Endeavor never married I was irrationally annoyed that Joan is marrying Jim.

Did I blink and miss something or are the separate (?) deaths of the two men part of ongoing stories?

Must be. Micky Flood some kind of ghost from Thursday's past. AL asking Box to help with a missing person, and somehow being linked to the closed case on the boy's home from series ago.

My bet is on a grubby ending for Thursday - prison, maybe - with Morse 100% disillusioned.

I just kind of think that chimes with him never mentioning him again better than a heroic ending!

Roystonv · 27/02/2023 09:46

Ah, after reading these comments don't think I will be watching, sounds too grim for me. I wanted to but was wary. I know some background must be given but I watch for the police work/crime solving. Grantchester is spoilt for me too; too sad and depressing. Miss Marple it is then (!) but then the new adaptations are just seedy/grubby.

You could be right. He used to be a bit quick with his fists but he did pay back the bribe money he was offered before and refused to go along with it.

IwantToRetire · 27/02/2023 16:41

There was an existing thread about this here www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4746479-endeavour-9th-final-season-starts-26-february-2023-at-8pm-on-itv

And having watched last night it is so hard to reconcile the character of Endeavour with the Morse of the original series which in terms of his age etc., he has just about reached that it all jarred a bit with me.

Like they were playing to the crowd knowing what we liked.

GuyFawkesDay · 27/02/2023 17:12

Shaun Evans is very good at pulling the sad lost boy face!!!

Does anyone know who it was at Morse's door at the very end of last night's episode? It was dark and I couldn't quite tell. Was it Box (think that's his name, the private detective?)
