Ed Balls on Good Morning Britain

I don’t normally watch this programme but I’m travelling and have it on in my hotel room atm.

Is it just me or is he appallingly smug? And not a terribly good television presenter?

I quite like Yvette Cooper so he must have some good attributes so I am not commenting on Ed as a person, just how he is coming across on screen.

I stayed watching to see if he would be any better on the ‘hard’ news sections eg interview with Ben Wallace on Ukraine but at first he seemed unsure and was outshone by his female co-presenter (Charlotte?) and then he asked questions that were far too long and he just seems so ill at ease it’s uncomfortable to watch.

I haven't seen it, but I liked him in the TV shows he presented on Trump's America and Europe/Brexit.

BeautifulDayintheneighbourhood · 15/02/2023 09:46

I really like him. He is honest and doesn’t seem to have a huge ego. I enjoy listening to him unlike many others. He also talks sense.

Buenosfairies211 · 15/02/2023 09:56

Oh well that’s interesting, I stand corrected! Maybe he was just having an off day? He didn’t seem to be getting along with his co-presenter very well, or vice versa, maybe that threw him off?

I’ve really enjoyed his TV shows, he’s insightful and engaging.

Maybe it depends on the show. Good Morning Britain is very different from the things he's done where he travels round meeting people, talking to them and being the only one presenting to camera.
I would say look up his other work if you can; it's very interesting and thought-provoking. And funny!

Buenosfairies211 · 15/02/2023 10:05

Given what I saw this morning, I am surprised the responses are so overwhelmingly positive about him but that could just be that Good Morning Britain is a pretty dreadful programme in the first place. I haven’t seen him in a more serious setting.

I quite fancy Ed Balls.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 15/02/2023 10:21

No you’re correct OP, he does come across as a bit smug.

I mean I’m sure he’s a great presenter etc but certain qualities you need to win over voters and work in central government are also similarly utilised in tv presenting.

Thank god that complete and utter bell end Matt Hancock hasn’t wangled himself a tv presenting job yet as then I would be complaining and criticising!

Of course GMB is an awful programme to start with, it employs or employed Piers Morgan and Susannah Reid.

It’s basically dumbed down morning tv for the plebs. Which is why Ed fits in well there, presenting!

I'm happy to be one of those plebs who regularly watches and likes Ed Balls. It would be a boring world if we all liked the same things.

Buenosfairies211 · 15/02/2023 10:38

I am genuinely surprised that he is so popular with Mumsnetters who are pretty tough critics on the whole!

He's far more preferable to Richard Madeley. I can't watch when he is on.

Zingy123 · 15/02/2023 12:10

He's a terrible presenter.

Lampzade · 15/02/2023 12:16

I actually like watching Ed Balls . Anyone is preferable to the vile Piers Morgan

ssd · 15/02/2023 12:16

I love yvette cooper, i wish she was leader

faffadoodledo · 15/02/2023 12:17

Saying he's better than Madeley or Morgan is somewhat damning Balls with faint praise!

PrincessScarlett · 15/02/2023 12:44

I quite enjoy watching Ed Balls. And Robert Rinder. Far better than Richard Madeley and Adil who always comes across very aggressive.

I like her too. And for her to be married to Ed I think there must be something very nice about him.

CaptainMyCaptain · 15/02/2023 12:58

He has been good in the programmes he's presented before. I don't watch morning TV so can't comment specifically.

custardbear · 15/02/2023 14:30

I like Robert Rinder when he's presenting!
Ed balls has a stutter so can sound a bit stilted at times, he's ok- far better than RM who is a liability!

Bichette · 15/02/2023 14:30

I like him. The program where he worked in a care home was very interesting.
I think his mother suffers from dementia and he came across as very empathetic.

😄😄😄

Seriously though, if he is rated by so many posters here then I may watch him again, but only in a programme about politics not morning TV.

Anyone who can be up, suited and capable of string 5 words together at the time Good Morning Britain starts is quite entitled to look smug

I am sure it is a lot harder than it looks and as you say the demands of getting up early make it very full on, but this morning he seemed to either find it hard to string words together or, his questions were far too long. Not that I watched all of it.
