I missed this first time around, and I’ve been binge watching it over the past week or two.

  1. Gillian seems to have no forward thinking skills at all; sleeps with anyone with no thought at all, constantly sabotaging her own life .
  2. Caroline is so repressed!
  3. Alan is very pragmatic.
  4. Celia is mardy.
  5. John is awful.
  6. They all drink so much!

We’re watching too and Gillian is so irritating I find it almost unwatchable

I like Caroline though

UnleashMyPicasso · 08/02/2023 19:59

Oh, and Raff and William are both fundamentally such decent lads.

I started watching this today too, Gillian is really not thinking and it’s very frustrating.
Caroline is awesome and Celia is dreadful - well, she’s a daily mail reader so what do we expect. Hope she changes a bit as the series goes on.

Celia gets worse….never better

I binge watched this over the last few weeks, and loved it. All of the characters have their faults, but Celia's behaviour to Caroline is appalling and she is incredibly selfish. Caroline is mostly fabulous though. John and Judith are amusingly dreadful all the way through in so many different ways.

I really miss it, and Happy Valley!

What to watch now?

diddl · 10/02/2023 14:29

Alan is so lovely-such a shame to land him with Celia!

Wasn't Gillian's husband abusive?

She does seem to lurch from man to man-perhaps not unrealistic?

WandaWonder · 11/02/2023 11:33

Up to episode 6 of series 1 I am not liking Celia

Flymetothetoon · 11/02/2023 11:37

Where are you watching this because I'd love to do a re watch myself.

yikesanotherbooboo · 11/02/2023 11:52

It's on iPlayer.

Thank you 🙏

snowballer · 11/02/2023 14:22

I'm envious of those watching for the first time. It's like a big warm cuddly blanket that series. John is my absolute favourite character. Strong crossover with Tony Shales in Fresh Meat..

CuriousMama · 11/02/2023 22:05

I've started rewatching am on series 2 now. Gillian is a car crash but at least aware of it.
It gets interesting regarding Judith.

Bubbletrubble · 12/02/2023 21:36

I'm working through as I missed it first time round squealed with delight when Cheryl the Copper mentions Sgt Cawood lovely happy valley tie in

MarshaBradyo · 12/02/2023 21:39

I’m struggling to get to the end. I can’t stand Gillian and all of them just seem so unlikeable

MrsKeats · 12/02/2023 21:43

I cannot stand Celia. So selfish and intolerant. It wasn't Caroline's fault that her mum had an unhappy marriage.
I love Sally Wainwright's digs at the Daily Heil.

Bubbletrubble · 12/02/2023 22:03

I think they are painted very realistically though which makes the characters unlikeable as they all have faults and flaws. Lots of quirks or comments that remind me of people I know, but just a reminder that everyone is human and flawed. I do think the two eldest grandsons are the most well rounded and likeable.

MarshaBradyo · 12/02/2023 22:06

Yes the eldest grandsons are nice

I still like Caroline

I think it’s not liking the character and the actor in Gillian’s case

I can take Celia as I like the acting and she’s believable in her role. I can’t fathom Gillian’s attraction and preferred Cheryl in that scene.

WandaWonder · 19/02/2023 07:10

I am up to nearly middle of season 3 and in one way I am really enjoying it and find the different 'personalities' like 'posh' and 'common' working together type thing but the wedding storyline seems a bit repetitive and the normal then someone finds secret then that gets dragged out a bit box ticking like

But still one of my favourite dramas of recent times

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 19/02/2023 07:51

I didn't see this when it was first on and started on iplayer after Happy Valley finished. I bailed out early in series 3, though, as I was starting to find it a bit contrived. Should I give it another go? The acting is great, the scenery is wonderful, I enjoy the dialogue, but the endless plot twists were annoying me. I started Series 3 because I have a great weakness for Rupert Graves. If he features a lot, maybe I should give it another go.

I thought John was a marvellous character, very well acted. He is so, so awful, but I've read posts on MN about men like him, so perhaps there is some basis in reality.

And finally, I'd be surprised if everybody just accepted a head having an affair with a staff member in the way they seem to in LTIH. Wouldn't other staff feel this was inappropriate? Who does the performance review and lesson observations? What happens when the staff member applies for a promotion?

Charlieiscool · 19/02/2023 08:05

But why can’t Nicola Walker say a line without stopping, gasping, croaking and then finishing the line? So irritating. She does it in everything she’s in.

This. Not so long ago everyone was raving about how fabulous an actor she is. She can't even say a simple line smoothly. I understand for some characters, in certain situations, the way she speaks would be appropriate but I just find it fully irritating and can't stand her as an actor at all.

MarshaBradyo · 19/02/2023 08:21

Me either and we’ve stopped watching

I find her fairly unbearable and her story line makes it worse

CuriousMama · 19/02/2023 09:39

When Caroline said Celia didn't go to her graduation because she was sulking. And it was nothing to do with Caroline. Then sulks about Alan/son and doesn't go to Caroline's wedding. Hateful woman.
Yes NW's stammering is pretty bad in this. I think it isn't as bad in Unforgotten? So is it put on?

OnaBegonia · 19/02/2023 09:43

@Charlieiscool
I agree, Nicola Walkers 'style' is very annoying, the pause/pouty have a think, drives me mad.
