I missed this first time around, and I’ve been binge watching it over the past week or two.

  1. Gillian seems to have no forward thinking skills at all; sleeps with anyone with no thought at all, constantly sabotaging her own life .
  2. Caroline is so repressed!
  3. Alan is very pragmatic.
  4. Celia is mardy.
  5. John is awful.
  6. They all drink so much!

But why can’t Nicola Walker say a line without stopping, gasping, croaking and then finishing the line? So irritating. She does it in everything she’s in.

It is annoying, I wonder if she does it in real life and it's some kind of speech impediment?

WandaWonder · 19/02/2023 10:06

John feels like a different person each episode, well sometimes he is a drunk rambler, sometimes calm and rational, sometimes like he is away with the fairies, and a couple of others I can't pinpoint

I wish he would just pick one

MarshaBradyo · 19/02/2023 10:25

Nicola also does that I’m annoyed with everyone flounce

In reality she is incredibly annoying and the others too wet around her

SpringIntoChaos · 19/02/2023 10:48

I agree that Celia is absolutely hateful as Caroline's mum in this. She starts out ok towards Alan but slowly starts to show her true colours there too...awful character! Great acting though!

I googled Nicola Walker in a 'real life' interview, to see if she spoke in this dreadful affected way...and she didn't in the interview that I saw, so it does appear to be 'her acting style', which makes me dislike her even more. It's a shame, because she could be so good! It's such an annoying trait! Her manager (or anyone close really!) ought to tell her to pack it in as it pissing off the viewers!

The series started off well but never recovered from the death of Kate. It ended up being silly and implausible, I think Sally Wainwright just ran out of steam.

I've re-watched At Home with the Braithwaites and the character similarities with Last Tango are very noticeable. However, both are entertaining. Poor Nicola Walker, give her a break. These programmes have Directors to guide and critique performance. I expect she does what she's asked to do.

Charlieiscool · 19/02/2023 20:11

Poor Nicola Walker? Surely she can’t be told to do that irritating affectation all the time. I’ve seen her on stage and she was very good but on TV, no, she’s ah ahem um dreadful.

We're binge watching this, series 4 now but it's annoying me now. Started out brilliant but they shouldn't have killed of Kate. It's been flailing since. I'm also finding Gillians fake stammering style annoying. Very overacted, but not quite as annoying as Derek Jacobi. I know he's supposed to be some marvellous actor, but it's very unnatural and exaggerated. Almost like it's out of a textbook. And old fashioned acting. Sarah Lancashire otoh, as slways is brilliant, natural and very easy to watch.
We are rushing through it now just to get it over and done with. First 2 series we're brilliant though

WandaWonder · 03/03/2023 22:37

I will be finished it all tonight yeah it is not as good as the first couple of seasons

JMAngel1 · 04/03/2023 12:14

I’m in Season 5 and finding it like a hot cup of tea in a hot bath - so comforting.
Celia is hideous though - no idea why Alan puts up with her. Love Alan - good in him for getting himself a job away from her.
I’m finding the storyline with Caroline and Ruth fairly implausible - nobody would be that offended surely at being invited to dinner? And the way Ruth spoke to Caroline was horrific just before the audience with Judith.

Those saying they like John - whaaat? He’s the most weak spined pathetic excuse for a man I’ve ever come across - his simpering makes my skin crawl.

I thought Robbie was a much better man - but of course Missy NW pushed him away.

Not sure what I’m going to watch when it’s all over!

I agree. I binge watched this on Netflix over this past weekend. I love Sally Wainwright, watched Happy Valley all the way through at least 3 times. Was thrilled that Sergeant Cawood got a mention towards the end of LTIH!! I was pretty disappointed in this series, did not feel the chracters had the humanity or depth of those in HV. No blame on the actors' performances as all were brilliant, but their parts lacked depth. Every time they decided to do anything, it had to be done right now, even getting married. Celia grew from an unlikeable rude haughty person to a totally despicable creature. Alan correspondingly grew weaker and more cowardly during their 7 years together. At least Sally made the kids likeable and decent, so perhaps they learned from their parents and g-parents!
