Britain’s Next Top Model - all series being re run on itv hub

Just seen that the ITV hub are re-running all the old series of Britain’s Next Top Model so decided to watch series one and my gosh it’s made feel really uncomfortable. I’m shocked at what we used to think was acceptable treatment of young girls on a tv show, back in the mid 2000s. Has anyone else watched it? Am i overreacting or is it really bad??

I’ve assumed the American series aren’t rerun for the same reasons. Obviously I will rewatch all of these though. Thanks

I haven't but I will! I remember thinking it was awful then (but I still watched it) so I expect by today's standards it's horrifying!

I am watching season 1 episode 1. All the women have pubic hair. So different to today. So far, the presenting model is kinder than the later seasons and much nicer than Tyra in the US show

It was bad but compared to Americas..Annyalise who was on both has spoke about her experience and from sounds the British one was definitely a lot tamer! They could talk to production etc.

Still annoys me when they'd get cristism on the styling that was out of control or the dodgy hair cut they'd get..also out of their control.

I think some of it was. That precursor ? programme Model Behaviour was even worse with the audition and selection process.

We used to find the haircuts and styling distressing @LetsGoFlyAKiteee You could guarantee the girl with the beautiful long hair would get a short cropped cut! More than one of them cried. This was just before they made the final selection process so they'd go home with the extreme styling ☹️

@lucykk Yep!! One girl after even said the more you worried about having short hair before hand and said it aloud the more likely they were to have it done because of the reaction it would cause.

I just remember one girl Charlotte think from series 6 when one judge would not stop going on and on about her weight! Had been watching recaps months ago on YouTube and it was uncomfortable..

I'm a top model fanatic, watched many franchises, eagerly re-watching them all on ITV X.

It's problematic AF now but I still love it! The very early series are so budget though haha.

Have to admit I loved watched these at the time, you're right though is quite sobering seeing what was acceptable then! I preferred ANTM I have to confess.

Aside from the main issues with the show (both antm and bntm) I always remember BNTM feeling like it was done on a shoe string - set design felt like someone had found a silver sheet and sellotaped it to back wall of a cupboard

They forced them all to have a Brazilian wax on tv in the first episode 😳😳

Totally!! The flat the finalists had to stay in Milan in the first series was hilariously bad!

There were so many nude shoots, and they didn't even bother blurring anything out! One cycle (might be 7??) one model really didn't want to take her knickers off for very good reason and got pressured into it! And she had previously fainted 'into a boots self service check out 😂' from exhaustion when doing something in the middle of the night on zero sleep.

A model forced to eat lamb's brain when veggie and told off for not doing it was another cringe moment.

And so much drinking!! You'd never get that now.

I always remember one girls being chastised because she didn’t want to take her clothes off. One of the judges then got naked to help her feel more comfortable. It was awful and made the situation so much worse. I think she then got booted off the show. I remember being so shocked by that! Also another girl got a hard time for not wanting to kiss another girl for a photo shoot. She was labelled as a prude and homophobic!

You can totally see how all the #metoo stuff happened in such an industry. They're constantly being told they're not allowed to have any boundaries if they want to be successful.

Definitely. There was one girl who was not happy with her very short hair. I think she was called Alex and made it to the final few I'm sure though I don't know if she won. The model agency she signed up with were wanting her to grow it back she said.

Yes the boundaries thing was awful. It reminds me of an interview with Kate Moss. She talked about crying on shoots and the nude photos. ☹️

I didn’t watch much of it but do remember the series with Abi Clancy in. She came across really sweet, and some of the other girls - and judges - were awful to her, for no reason. It was quite sad to watch..

I can’t imagine it’s a show that has dated well. There are some clips of bullying that have surfaced from the US series

Il be honest I've been binge watching them whilst late night breastfeeding.
Season 1, Lisa butcher as the main judge seemed to give a shit more about the 'girls' (although why do we call them girls and not women? 🤷)

Then Lisa Snowdon who was nice enough, but by the time Elle MacPherson came on the other judges are vile and demeaning. They're trying to go x-factor style, high drama etc. Elle herself seems sweet enough but it's just horrible to watch the later seasons!

Hilary Alexander died 2 weeks ago on her birthday 😢

This was my favourite ever show I was so gutted they stopped making it! I remember Abby Clancy always arguing during her series!

The Australian one was good too, lots of bitching haha
