Who would you cast instead of Dominic West in The Crown s5?

I have really enjoyed Dominic West in other things but this casting didn't work for me.

I'm trying to think who else would have suited the role better. A younger Alex Jennings sprang to mind (did enjoy him as Edward VIII).

Who do you think?

I think they wasted Charles Dance on Earl Mountbatten in an earlier series.

VollywoodHampires · 02/12/2022 18:40

Tobias Menzies was incredible as Prince Phillip, I think he would have also made a wonderful Prince Charles. Dominic West just comes across as….smug.

VollywoodHampires · 02/12/2022 18:42

Also can’t bear Jonathan Price as Prince Phillip, he has no charisma.

Icedlatteplease · 02/12/2022 18:42

Couldn't get on with any of the season casting. Particularly Elizabeth Debicki as Diana, really off putting.

theleafandnotthetree · 02/12/2022 18:43

I don't know why they didn't just leave the previous actors playing Charles and Diana in place. Especially Diana, I'm afraid I'm not feeling her at all. Nor Dominic West who I love. Well used to love, not liking him in this.

I agree with this. He also looked too bedraggled. Prince Philip could look very well put together.

Quite. What a waste. He'd have been brilliant. JP doesn't work at all

EmmaAgain22 · 02/12/2022 18:46

I have only watched the first half hour of this season and everyone seems miscast

or in Debicki's case, too annoying to watch. Is it worth persevering?

Whataretheodds · 02/12/2022 18:57

Charles Dance would have been a great S5/6 Philip. Tobias Menzies would have been a great Charles.

Just googled and found an article suggesting casting for Charles for a different series. TM was suggested, also Cumberbatch, which I can see. But most of the actors I can think of are just too good looking.

I've seen lots of complaints about Debicki making Diana a caricature but when I see actual video of Diana she is a caricature!

I hated the first 2 episodes, enjoyed the rest more but not a patch on s1-4

Ah, I think I'll give it a miss.

swirlypinky · 04/12/2022 09:05

Alex Jennings was good as Charles in the 2006 film

Josh o'connor was excellent

Dominic could have hammed it up more. Like a PP said, they are caricatures. Charles's voice is very distinctive. If he could have just done that better, he could have been more
Believable

swirlypinky · 04/12/2022 09:06

Debicki grew on me. Diana was annoying.

swirlypinky · 04/12/2022 09:08

None of them are posh enough

They're the poshest people in the world. Just get the posh voices right at the very least

Costadelot · 04/12/2022 09:11

Debicki was perfect as Diana. That's what she was like. DW was completely miscast though. And the whole series was very dull compared to other ones.

DorritLittle · 04/12/2022 09:12

I thought Debecki was perfect. She was Diana! I agree DW wasn't an exact match but nor was Jonathan Pryce. I still thought both were very good. My favourite casting was Johnny Lee Miller as John Major!

Agree. All the casting has been weak this time. Can't warm to any of them

Outfor150 · 04/12/2022 09:54

Debicki is fine. Annoying but fine -she’s just like she was in real life. The mannerisms are spot on.

Dominic West is all wrong as Charles. Every time he’s on , I’ve got to remind myself who he is playing. Benedict Cumberbatch would be better maybe.

Jonathan Pryce is also all wrong for Philip.

Whataretheodds · 04/12/2022 11:52

DW didn't make an effort with the voice and the stiffness.

Trees6 · 04/12/2022 21:21

Pretty awful casting of the family. However, I liked the actors portraying the Al Fayeds, and thought that they were spot on. Similarly, Edward Viii and Wallis. My favourite episode was the one with the brilliant Bahamian valet that featured all of these. The Diana stuff on the other hand, was tedious and I feel as if I’ve seen it all so many times.

I enjoyed the Penny storyline and I thought that Jonny Lee Miller’s John Major was nuanced. I liked Lesley Manville’s subtle portrayal of Margaret’s sadness and regret. Marmaduke Hussey was great.

The royals didn’t get the cut-glass accent right in the way that Claire Foyle and Josh O’Connor (for example) did. They sounded middle-class and occasionally would throw in a “vair” or a “heppy”.

IMO Dominic West was too sexy as Charles, not spoilt/peevish enough.

Jonathan Pryce got Philip’s candid stare down to a tee, but otherwise didn’t capture his ascerbic nature. He didn’t look polished enough, either. Prince Phillip was immaculate.

The actress playing the Queen Mother was too tall and too light. The QM was short, and famously gluttonous, with a pudgy face. There was a reason why Mrs Simpson and her spiteful smart set called her “the fat Scottish cook” behind her back.

As for the OP’s question…an unpopular opinion, but I would have kept the original cast and “aged” them with makeup, wigs and padding, as they did so well in Heimat and The Forsyte Saga many years ago.

rosemarysalter · 14/12/2022 21:32

Just watching the Spy Among Friends and Guy Pierce would have been good

He played edward iii in The kings speech and masters the British Aristocracy voice well

I bet he could do charles

Southeastdweller · 14/12/2022 22:13

Matthew Rhys would have been better as Charles. I almost wish Tobias Menzies hadn't played Prince Philip because he would have also been great.

The casting in this latest season for the principal cast apart from E.D has been awful and made it the worst season so far, that and mundane writing.

lollipoprainbow · 01/01/2023 15:10

Just watching new series now. Olivia Williams would have been much better playing Margaret she is the image of her, can't see her as Anne at all.

Redcrayons · 01/01/2023 15:18

i haven’t like this series so much. None of the actors seem quite right.

I wonder if it’s because I remember the events of the current series and so I know it doesn’t look right.

HappyHolidai · 01/01/2023 15:29

Agree that they weren't posh enough. I listened to the real Princess Margaret Desert Island Discs off the back of it coming up in this series and she was vastly posher (and perhaps naturally came across as extremely entitled!). Though PD James who was not posh spoke in a similar clipped style in her 1982 outing.

Imelda Staunton was better as HMQ than Olivia Coleman (who was appalling), but again not posh enough. My mum described her as playing her like a provincial bishop's wife and I think that's right.

Similarly Charles Spencer. I did enjoy Elizabeth Debicki as Diana, though: thought she captured her very well.
