I've just watched the main and results show as didn't have time before.
I don't pretend to understand the differing "values" of steps from a technical pov but I just get the general impression in this series that 10s are being sprinkled about a bit too freely and that is undermining the value of them.
To my mind, to earn a ten, every single detail and placing of hand and turn of head has to be perfect. Maybe having one less day to rehearse in made it hard for the contestants this week but I thought some of the dancers who received 10s didn't achieve that level of perfection. I loved Fleur's dance though and would have marked it higher!
For example, I am sure I remember a previous Bob Fosse routine (was it with Fay Tozer?) which was more accomplished than Helen's performance. She did well (and good on her) but when you watch back the series of stills on the results show, her positioning isn't quite the same as a professional's would be.
I don't object to dances from Cabaret being featured though. I prefer that style of dance to some of the more saccharine flouncy stuff. And Cabaret's sleazy decadence was not featured (in the musical) gratuitously, it was highlighting the tawdry moral vacuum that allowed the extreme brutal, jingoistic, far right nationalism, in the form of the Nazis, to take power. I agree we could have done without Gorka crawling about on his hands and knees though!
I did feel sorry for Kym at the end. It was a bit of harsh ending after coming back from Covid and her father being in hospital and I thought she did well even if the dance needed a bit more exuberance! You could tell she was gutted. But she was refreshingly no nonsense and dignified throughout.
I can't work out why I don't warm to Molly as she hasn't done anything wrong and she's relatively young to have to undergo the pressure of all those dance offs and attendant social media comment. It makes me wonder about what attracts you to a person or not? Can't work it out!
