It also has to be remembered that Strictly isn't a show where you hate-vote people off: you vote for who you are invested in (normally a combination of being entertained by someone + thinking they are at risk). I liked both Ashley and Alexandra but didn't vote for them. It wasn't that I despised them, or anything (I may have voted once or twice for Alexandra - I can't quite remember). I voted like mad for Charles Venn and Mark Benton, and they were constantly in the dance-off, with me complaining that the public have no taste.

I don't think the public are actively racist when it comes to Strictly but I do think racist and sexist stereotypes can inform public expectations on a subconscious level. Whenever a youngish black female singer goes on the show the forums are full of people saying, 'Omg, she's going to be brilliant!' so anything less than brilliance leads to disappointment. Expectations for the likes of Ed Balls are so low that he just has to be not terrible for people to warm to him for 'giving it a go.' How many times per series do we hear someone on Strictly say that showing emotion or performing is harder for the men? Do they think women are born with the innate ability to feel comfortable wearing a chiffon catsuit and frotting an Italian to the strains of Dusty Springfield on live television?

This is well explained. I still think Danny Mac was the best contestant ever ( teamed with the best pro ever) and robbed by weepy Ore Oduba. But I also get that voters want a journey from clumsy class clown to Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

I usually judge my favourite by which dances I rewatch on YouTube and this week is was Tyler and Dianne's cha cha cha. With Mollie's Argentine Tango second.

The three dancers I look forward to most this year are Tyler, Will and Hamza. I quite like Fleur as a dancer too and Mollie.

Overall I miss Matt. I think he could have developed well. I wonder how the show would be if all the dancers stayed in until the end and had the same chance to learn and train. And how many would go on to become better dancers.

Maybe it’s run its course. Everything has a shelf life. And maybe, like me, people are getting fed up of the BBC shoving it down our throats. It’s all feeling a bit ‘forced fun’.

I don’t understand this at all. It’s just a TV show; and can be switched off.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 31/10/2022 12:59

Apologies if someone else has mentioned this but, apparently Strictly will be Friday and Sunday during the World Cup, which makes the pre
record even more ridiculous and the Spoiler even harder to avoid.
Hmm

As to "run its course", they wouldn't still make it if audience figures were really low. It remains very popular.

I'd agree with that too @Tabbouleh and @BonnesVacances
I think in all these years my most rewatched dances have been:

Mark Ramprakash's samba
Danny Mac's samba
Tom Chamber's show dance
Austin Healey's Paso
Rachel Steven's Tango
John Waite's Paso

The only one of those I actually voted for was Tom Chambers.

Ffs really? Why can't they stick the football on bbc 2 or something. Or even strictly

Because they want 2 nights of high viewing figures, not 1 night with two halves watching each

Twonewcats · 31/10/2022 13:46

I loved Chucky Venn, he was robbed

Alexandra Burke was my second favourite in her year but had the misfortune to be up against Debbie McGee, my absolute, all-time, the show will never get more camp than this, peak Strictly contestant ever. I loved Rose, but every time someone says she was Giovanni's best partner I start growling like a farm dog.

Yes, I was so sorry that Debbie didn't win that year. I had lots of fantasies about moving in with her to keep her company. Not sure I should be allowed to view TV.

Friday 2nd and Sunday 11th are the quarter and semifinals

ShakeYourFeathers · 31/10/2022 13:56

Great and I miss out on the Friday because of a works thing. I was looking forward to snuggling up on that Saturday watching strictly hungover

FuzzyPuffling · 31/10/2022 14:01

I bloody hate football.

EsmaCannonball · 31/10/2022 14:29

Bastarding football!

cordelia16 · 31/10/2022 14:42

mydogisthebest · 31/10/2022 09:44

I agree. I hated the music for Fleur and wasn't keen on the dance.

The poster who accused voters of racism and disliking strong beautiful black woman mentioned Alexandra Burke. She was in the final so how on earth did viewers dislike her?

Ok she didn't win and some people may think she should have done but since when did the best dancer ever win? Danny Mac should have won his year easily but didn't

Alexandra was in the dance off several times. She only made it to the final because the judges saved her every single time. Not that she didn't deserve to make the final. She did, and I think she deserved to win. But she did not have public support.

I loved Chucky Venn, he was robbed

It's not so much that he was robbed, it's the way he's been forgotten that annoys me. I loved Bill Bailey but anyone saying "OMG, Bill and Oti's couple's choice was so original and brilliant" sends me into a full-on JUSTICE 4 CHUCKY AND KAREN!!! rant.

I will resist the urge to post YouTube links because I think a glut of them on the last thread slowed it down to a crawl, but see also his rumba, samba, Charleston and salsa.

Tabbouleh · 31/10/2022 15:54

I loved Chucky Venn too, especially his samba. He had style.

the80sweregreat · 31/10/2022 16:33

The footie World Cup being in Nov / Dec will mess up so many programmes
Usually it's June / July time and not much on tv then anyway : this time of year they have new dramas out / strictly etc.
it's bound to ruin it.

LaMarschallin · 31/10/2022 16:39

I find it incredibly annoying the way most sports, but especially football, take precedence over everything else in the schedules.
And, yes, it'll be particularly annoying this year being in winter when the programmes tend to be a bit better.

Emotionalsupportviper · 31/10/2022 17:03

I would have gone over to the other side for a bag of sugar and a pair of nylons.

That Esma . . . no better than she should be.

<hoicks bosom>

EsmaCannonball · 31/10/2022 14:29

Bastarding football!

I think you mis-typed.

You surely meant EFFING bastardise football

Blueberrycreampie · 31/10/2022 17:15

What! I didn't even know it was the World Cup! Stupid tv planners😤

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 31/10/2022 18:00

It will of course depend on which games BBC get and which games ITV get.

And varying kick off times

OP posts:
EvilRingahBitch · 31/10/2022 18:04

On the upside, maybe fewer people will apply for Strictly tickets on a Friday or a Sunday and I'll finally get lucky. Just put my application in.
🤞

Trees6 · 31/10/2022 18:40

I like football so I'm looking forward to it all! Roll on mid-November !

I do wish they’d just broadcast the results on the same night. The “Sunday night” farce is irritating. Viewers who can’t stay awake to watch them (eg very young children) can record them and watch on Sunday morning which would still be better than waiting until Sunday evening.
