YEY. just seen the new season is starting 23 October. I binge watched the others earlier in the month so can’t wait for it to start again. The ending was a shocker that I didn’t see coming. I can’t wait to see where they’re taking it. Will serena joy get let go because she was under his orders AND she’s having a baby. Or will she get put into jail and baby taken away when he’s born.

OP posts:

I'm happy at the idea of Serena in a detention centre (which presumably won't be as fancy as her 'water-feature' room) but not without her baby :(

How come Serena got arrested?

Yes she had diplomatic protection when she made that deal with Tuello and handed over Fred and was staying in the detention centre but then she moved out for a week or so into the Gilead Information Centre and was then stating at the Wheeler house.

So how come Canadian immigration didn't come for her in either of those 2 places and is suddenly only interested when she goes to the hospital???

She lost diplomatic immunity as soon as she left the Wheeler house. Bit like Julian Assange when he was holed up in that embassy.

I think she was ok when in the information centre because it was sort of like an embassy. Maybe they didn't know she was at the Wheelers or Wheeler is too much of a big cheese to have his house raided?

But how come she had it there?

AFAIK that stay chez Wheeler was arranged by Ezra (a Gilead dude I think, not a Canadian government official) and Tuello and his crew didn't have to sign it off or give it approval.

Not adding up for me...

ouch321 · 04/12/2022 22:13

Also disappointed we haven't got to see the first Offred.

Flashbacks last week or two weeks back suggested we might.

dapsnotplimsolls · 04/12/2022 22:14

Are the Wheelers American or Canadian? I'm not good enough with those accents to spot the difference.

WitchSharkadder · 04/12/2022 22:14

That was such a good episode. Perfectly done and I'm kicking myself for feeling sympathy for Serena and being angry at Luke. Very clever writing and brilliant acting.

I'm not convinced by the meaningful looks between them in the flashbacks. Wasn't Serena pretty much a bitch to June right from the start?

I've just rewatched series 1 and there was moments of, not quite friendliness, but a shared understanding and camaraderie between June & Serena in the early days. Before the proper batshit stuff kicked in. I think Serena's true hatred of June kicked in when she discovered Fred had been taking June to Jezebels. Until then, she hated the situation of having June being in her home, watching her husband have sex with/rape her, June representing the fertility she so desperately wanted. But she didn't hate June.

I'm not sure of the intricacies but think it was a similar set up to the information centre with diplomatic immunity but not sure why.

viques · 04/12/2022 22:42

Funny conspiritorial glances between. June and Serena in the Gilead flashbacks. Almost saying, “ yes this birthing party nonsense is ridiculous, but let’s just get through it” I assume since Janice is already pregnant that June has been to another commanders house as a hand maid but the placement failed because she was her usual sunny self she didn’t get pregnant.
I like these randomly inserted ‘previously unseen Gilead footage ‘ moments, very enlightening.

Otherwise that episode should have been several no man’s land hours shorter.

” I’ve got the car started, get in.”

worth it for the last five minutes though!

colouringindoors · 04/12/2022 22:50

That was a Good episode.

walnutmarzipan · 04/12/2022 23:00

Do you think the baby will be sent to Gilead?

dapsnotplimsolls · 04/12/2022 23:05

I just hope he doesn't end up with the Wheelers.

Maybe it'll have a manger ... :)

I think that's probably my favourite line!

Loving this season. I love June and Serena back together they’re an incredible duo to watch and have fantastic, complex chemistry

WitchSharkadder · 04/12/2022 23:17

'Evolution.....?' Made me laugh so much 🤣

Oh how could I forget aunt Lydia 🤯

You know what, I see good in her. I think she’s extremely misguided and traumatised from her own life events and truly wants to ‘fulfil her divine role’ but equally she isn’t turning a blind eye to the events unfolding in front of her with regards to Esther’s rape and the general abuse of handmaids. She just seems to have been slow on the uptake and needed evidence of it rather than seeing it for the huge grooming gang that it is. I think she’ll ‘switch sides’ and maybe end up with Lawrence?!

The Testaments explains well why Aunts are like they are including Lydia. Essentially anyone who’s not a wife or commander in Gilead is in a role against their will including the Aunts and the Testaments explaining their beginnings is so insightful and has made me change how I see Lydia

WrenNatsworthy · 04/12/2022 23:21

I don't post on this thread but always read it after every episode.

I felt moved to post because that was so incredible.
I wanted to watch it again straight away!

I'm also angry at Luke and sympathetic with Serena - because, like June- I don't believe in 'an eye for an eye'.

Clever how the episode ended by showing the ways in which the patriarchy also dominates in Canada. Gilead may be extreme, but Canada was happy to separate a mother and child too.

I bet Margaret loved it.

dapsnotplimsolls · 04/12/2022 18:28

I don't think Nick's a true believer but it's been hinted that he's done things that are so awful that he won't get any kind of amnesty elsewhere. I think he's working against the system from the inside as much as he can.

He was a Son of Jacob and a nasty piece of work IIRC so would be jailed for war crimes if he crossed into Canada

VanillaImpulse · 04/12/2022 23:31

I think June was so torn when the baby was born thinking she could just cut the cord and run off with him. Then Serena would know the feeling of her child being taken away from her. June realised she wasn't that person so did the right thing only for Luke to go and get the same result!

dapsnotplimsolls · 04/12/2022 23:33

I can understand Luke's actions though - he hadn't just been through the birth experience with Serena like June had. He was still furious after seeing Serena with Hannah at the funeral and wanted revenge. June was, sort of, moving past revenge for her own sake and for the sake of Noah.

WrenNatsworthy · 04/12/2022 23:34

Elisabeth Moss was amazing - the way she showed her struggles and thought patterns.

This season certainly is the love story between June and Serena.

XanaduKira · 04/12/2022 23:36

Fantastic episode!

dapsnotplimsolls · 04/12/2022 23:37

Will Serena think that June reported her? If she does, she'll be out for revenge. Again.
