YEY. just seen the new season is starting 23 October. I binge watched the others earlier in the month so can’t wait for it to start again. The ending was a shocker that I didn’t see coming. I can’t wait to see where they’re taking it. Will serena joy get let go because she was under his orders AND she’s having a baby. Or will she get put into jail and baby taken away when he’s born.

I wonder what Luke’s ex-wife is doing now?

Abra1t · 25/11/2022 18:22

Wasn’t she the one who reported them to the gilead authorities? So they knew June had been an adulteress and was therefore of a low enough status to be a handmaid?

CruCru · 25/11/2022 19:04

Luke’s ex wife could be either a Martha or an Aunt. I think Aunt Lydia said she’d been married a lot time ago.

XanaduKira · 25/11/2022 19:21

I thought Luke's wife was a Martha - don't remember why i think that, but I'm pretty sure there was something about it in series 1.

I love Luke's arc - he was a cheat but that doesn't define him and he is a good faithful husband now. No one is perfect. Even in the early days of Gilead when he didn't get it - when he told June not to worry as he'd get a bank account for her etc so not to worry about women no longer being able to have a bank account and then when the realisation came that they needed to get it, it was too late.

He must be wracked with guilt that June was left in Gilead, as well as Hannah, whilst he made it out. Serena reminding him of that must have been like a dagger to the heart.

Tulipomania · 26/11/2022 09:13

Serena reminding him of it was the reason he decided to go with June back into Gilead for the meeting with whatsisname.

Crinkle77 · 26/11/2022 12:07

I don't remember hearing anything about Luke's ex wife being a Martha.

The Testaments was a good book but nowhere near as good as THT. THT was a tense, dense read (you could see why it was an A level text) whereas TT came across a bit like fanfiction in relation to the TV series.

In fairness, Margaret Attwood is now much older and, presumably, was paid a lot for TT.

See I thoroughly enjoyed TT because it answered a lot of questions missing from the novel.

Such as how Aunt Lydia became an Aunt and what she did before. That was my favourite part because it totally changed my view of the Aunts

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 26/11/2022 21:26

Loved the latest episode - but how many times does June have to get caught running from Gilead 🙄

The Wheeler house story is excellent and giving me that terrifying feeling of unease - reminds me of Rosemary’s Baby. But I’m still confused as to who they are and why they aren’t in Gilead. They can’t be Giladeans - surely they’re Giladean wannabes, and maybe being used as a ‘tester’ on non-Gilead soil?

What’s Lawrence up to? I need to listen to Eyes on Gilead. I can never read him.

The bowling alley scene was tense. Very moving that this boy has no US memories, Lule and June have so many of Hannah, and they are all together like one big dysfunctional family but behaving lovingly. Luke and June’s dancing and closeness at that place shows they’re at their best when they’re being good ‘parents’.

CruCru · 21/11/2022 09:43

I’m surprised at Hannah being sent to wife school at 12 (even though she’s “ready”). Even Gilead must know that breeding from very young girls isn’t a great idea. They’d get a better yield from waiting a bit longer.

The Tudors (the posh ones) would marry their children off very young but then have them live apart for a few years until they were ready to have children. Part of the reason Henry VII’s mother only had one child was that she was twelve when she had him - her birth injuries meant she never had more children despite marrying again.

Yes Lady Beaufort was believed to be around 13 and as a result managed to set protocols to ensure future mothers of monarchs never had to endure birth from such a young age

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 26/11/2022 21:34

I feel like there’s parallels of the Gilead fertility centres (in Gilead commanders view not Serena’s) with abortion clinics today.

Many Christian organisations have been known to set up abortion advice clinics in the US that actually lure pregnant women into either keeping the baby or giving it up for adoption. I 100% feel like this fertility centre will serve as a vehicle to recruit more women to to the Gilead cause. Maybe provide them with the next round of handmaids (they will run out eventually surely?!). After all, they’ve taken over a whole nation before. They’re attuned at this type of work.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 26/11/2022 21:36

To those asking why Jayden didn’t just do the swap in the woods - in fairness I’m guessing he’s a border patroller for Gilead and if he’s caught by a colleague with 2 backpacks full of thumb drives it might look suspicious

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 26/11/2022 21:39

Re Serena being a handmaid - she’s already pregnant and with her age u likely to be so again. She doesn’t need to be schlepping around in someone’s house when it’s not their baby. But I do think the Wheeler’s will steal her baby for adoption, and a family will be picked (a bit like when her and Naomi were shopping for kids in a flashback). Then maybe the colonies?

Abra1t · 26/11/2022 23:02

She’s a brilliant character, isn’t she? So complex and so well portrayed. I hate her but a little bit of me is rooting for her just because of her audacity and refusal to stand down.

And sometimes there are those flashes of understanding between her and June.

Onthecuspofabreakthrough · 26/11/2022 23:38

She did let Nicole leave

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 26/11/2022 23:42

Does anyone wonder why, when Serena is pregnant (so Fred didn’t have slow swimmers after all) they haven’t DNA tested Nicole yet? She could well be Fred’s

Yes I’ve wondered that. Even if Serena wasn’t pregnant there’s always that slim possibility.

Onthecuspofabreakthrough · 27/11/2022 00:16

It wouldn't matter now though - June wouldn't want to know and there's no more Fred to potentially take her back to Gilead.

Cuppasoupmonster · 27/11/2022 00:20

It would matter to Nick wouldn’t it? Whether she’s his daughter or not?

Onthecuspofabreakthrough · 27/11/2022 10:15

True of course it would - he's not in a position to do any dna testing though. I do think probability is with it being the young virile driver she had lots of sex with though rather than the commander. 🤞

I never thought of that. Blush

Yes but Sod's Law and all that.

This was discussed at length in a previous thread. Unfortunately I can't remember the reasons why, but it was decided that Nicole was definitely Nick's. Did one of the production team confirm it?

dapsnotplimsolls · 27/11/2022 21:08

A full birthing suite? Oh boy.

Abra1t · 27/11/2022 21:15

Esther was going to have a uterine transfer?!

dapsnotplimsolls · 27/11/2022 21:18

Sounds like it. Gawd.
