YEY. just seen the new season is starting 23 October. I binge watched the others earlier in the month so can’t wait for it to start again. The ending was a shocker that I didn’t see coming. I can’t wait to see where they’re taking it. Will serena joy get let go because she was under his orders AND she’s having a baby. Or will she get put into jail and baby taken away when he’s born.

I like that Nick’s wife is a grown up - perhaps he asked for someone a bit older than Eden (as Eden was “flighty” and ended up being executed). Her being disabled is interesting - I wonder if she was the oldest potential wife left.

Re the people in Canada supporting Serena. Presumably Gilead would welcome any fertile families who wanted to move there but aren’t keen on those who are barren (which would be most of the population). So they are stuck in Canada, even if they support Gilead.

EachandEveryone · 01/11/2022 16:32

Oh god have I missed an episode? I cant remember seeing any funeral!

CruCru · 01/11/2022 16:34

It was episode 2 on Sunday - you can catch up on All4.

I actually like that June is becoming unlikeable. A series that started out seeming to really try and extract the different elements and viewpoints of motherhood now seems to be really looking at what happens to people post trauma. How it changes them, how it can make some people deeply unlikeable because of the way the damage has been wrought. And perhaps than questioning to what extent they are responsible for the damage they cause themselves, in reaction to that pain; and to what degree that responsibility for that damage lies on the original perpertrator.

I am enjoying the process of unpacking that.

I agree with you. All the time June was hounding Rita I was willing her to stop along with Moira, it was painful to watch but I could see where June was coming from. She obviously needs an outlet to talk about it and is looking for someone with something in common. She needs to get proper help and it has me wondering how many refugees are wandering around our country without adequate mental health support. That support group in the library was better than nothing but I haven't seen that happen for a while.

ProseccoOnIce · 01/11/2022 21:30

Just watched it on catchup. That was some episode, with the choreography of June in white & Sereba in black - Odile & Odette from Swan Lake.

I agree that June has become unlikeable through her trauma & needs proper psychological therapy - she clearly has PTSD & her husband is so clearly out of his depth & in a bit of denial about what she has endured.

The Commander Putnam chocolate incident was awful to watch - poor Esther - I can see why she would want to take her own life.

I hope Jannie survives though!

She does have form for poisoning! frankly given her history of knocking off commanders I am surprised any of them are prepared to give her a posting, maybe the Puttnams just like living dangerously, a normal handmaiden could be a bit boring after all the fun and games they had with Janine.

Fertile young women also seem to be few and far between in Gilead. Beggars can’t be choosers

whatsthestory123 · 01/11/2022 21:55

does anybody remember serina's mum i dont think she was seen again

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 01/11/2022 22:56

I wonder if Serena has ever reconsidered her position on things - like I wonder if she now sees what the commanders do as rape? And if she ever sees handmaidens as victims? It seems she’s had absolutely no personal growth.

Im a bit annoyed how no one is letting June be traumatised. She’s been through hell and is entitled to be angry but they seem to want her to be back to normal after a day.

Topgub · 01/11/2022 22:58

I think they know fine well its rape

They just don't care

Great episode. Someone mentioned that they didn't think Canada would put the funeral on it's tv but I think that the rest of the world would have a morbid fascination with Gilead and so it would make great ratings to air it.

Yes, let’s not forget that not long ago there was absolutely no one Gary of Gilead and it was North Korea style secretive. So to allow a glimpse into their world, to see the faces and fashion and buildings of where people she’s to live would be a huge ratings winner.

HauntedCabinet · 31/10/2022 18:18

how is Gilead funded
do they have an economy
not sure how money wise Gilead works

They addressed it a little bit in earlier series when the Mexican diplomat visited Gilead.

a) they don't have much money; previously having made what they could off the land and trading that, which is drying up
b) they were negotiating to sell handmaids (as Mexico also struggling with low birth rate)
c) I suspect they got a fair amount of initial money from confiscating money and valubale goods from traitors to the State

I’m sure in the book they don’t have money and buy food with paper vouchers - they had things like a fish voucher and a fruit voucher, which are rationed let household

Esther might be dead but Janine is a really central character. I’m getting cross that so many terrible things happen to Janine and not June.

Janine is badly educated and not at all ruthless. She yearns for Aunt Lydia’s praise and is weak willed.

June is smart and ruthless and willing to take risks. She has heaps of hate towards so many people too. Easier to rebel when you feel you have nothing to lose.

It seems Serena’s given up all hope of getting Nicole back, which is why she went to Canada in the first place. Once she became pregnant she completely stopped her custody quest. Which shows she KNOWS Nicole isn’t her child as well.

ginghamstarfish · 01/11/2022 23:47

A shame if Esther dies, she could have been following in June's footsteps as she is clearly raging over her fate.i expected her to at least bump off the creepy Putnam.

Completely agree!

EmpressaurusOfWitchesBackFromTheDead · 02/11/2022 07:43

While Janine's where she is, she can at least see her daughter. If Charlotte / Angela had been on Angels' Flight, maybe that would have been an extra incentive for her to escape to Canada.

HauntedCabinet · 02/11/2022 08:27

I don't think Janine/Esther can be dead. Especially after having to write Emily out so abruptly. It would be madness to bring those two in for half an episode just to bump them off. They are the only two inside Gilead now that the audience can resonate with and see the ongoing trauma through their eyes.

Plus, if/when Janine goes I think it will be a much bigger deal. As it should be.

I agree, Serena definitely knows it's rape.
She was plenty concerned when she thought she would end up a handmaid.

Beamur · 02/11/2022 12:15

Serena fits in Gilead, despite its restrictions. She's a true believer. Canada is not for her. She has status in Gilead which was as a Commanders wife and now it's boosted by her fertility. I think she will be forgiven and married to another powerful Commander before too long.
Contrast her dripping around with her hair down in beige cardigans in Canada and looking powerful and regal back in smart clothes and upswept hair at the funeral.

Topgub · 02/11/2022 12:17

I dont think Serena is a true believer

Not really.

She still thinks she , a woman, should have power

Just not other women

Hypocritical like the rest of them

Babasghost · 02/11/2022 12:37

Ive got a bad feeling about nick getting his daughter back!

HauntedCabinet · 02/11/2022 13:16

I suspect it's too neat a wrap up for HT, but I would get a great sense of satisfaction from seeing Serena end up as a handmaid. Which is probably pretty rubbish of me.

However, I did read an interview with Elisabeth Moss is which she described her view of June-Serena being the great love affair of the show. That they are like two seperated lovers who cannot stop their bitterness for each other causing them to keep trying to hurt the other. Interesting take.

HauntedCabinet · 02/11/2022 13:19

And yes, I think Serena definately loves power and thinks she is owed it.

She lost her power in Gilead as Fred started to dominate more. So went to Canada and handed Fred over, leaving her in a powerful position again. Then they arrested her too, and she had much less power. So she's argued her way back to Gilead where she is enjoying exercising her power (including as a pregnant women) once more. She won't be keen to go back to Canada where she loses that power again but cannot stay in Gilead and risk losing her baby.

Yes. They mentioned on the Eyes on Gilead podcast that Elisabeth Moss and Yvonne Strahovski call June & Serena Juliet & Juliet.

Brilliant! I shall have to find that podcast...
