Is this in German?

DameHelena · 14/10/2022 14:31

Yay! I love this series.
Just need to wait for Now TV to offer me one of their periodic free/cheap trials now...

Is this in German?

Yes, with subtitles.

Scrabble · 14/10/2022 14:33

It's so dark. A bit too dark for me in our current dark times. I looked up the plot of series 2 rather than watching it.

SammyScrounge · 14/10/2022 18:14

This series shows the collapse of the Weimar Republic and the Rise of the Nazis.
Hopefully with the usual sprinkling horror, humour, tenderness, danger , grinding poverty. I can hardly wait!

I enjoyed that. It was very satisfying to see familiar characters again. And so many plot seeds planted: how will they grow?

Loved the previous 3 series and watched the first episode of the new one this evening.

Can someone remind me, please - I think in the last series Lotte fell out with Toni, but I can't remember why?

Rhubarb01 · 15/10/2022 09:22

I thought Charlotte and Toni fell out over the money Toni had earned 'reading' to the old man. That turned into an argument with Toni throwing the line about them not really being sisters because she had read the letters Charlotte had hidden, and off she flounced to join the street kids. I might have that wrong, but that seemed to be the point at which things blew up between them.

SammyScrounge · 15/10/2022 09:36

Charlotte really didn't like the company she was keeping and how Toni was going out of control.

Thanks, @Rhubarb01 and @SammyScrounge

Are there only two episodes in series 4? And I also noticed that they were only available on NowTV until 18th December.

HellloooooWorld · 16/10/2022 17:18

Is this a new season?

I think they're only making them available each Friday to coincide with when they stream them live on Sky. I saw the first two episodes were available on Now on Friday morning. I imagine there will be 12 episodes or so, like the other series. I hope so!

Thank you, I really hope so too. I think it's one of the best modern TV series by far. I still haven't recovered from Greta's story.

Tootyfilou · 18/10/2022 23:21

Ooh so glad I found this thread! I absolutely love this series. We have not got Sky so are watching it at my parents, who are also huge fans. We watched the first two episodes today and it looks as though it's going to be another brilliant series. I was so excited I made a german themed picnic complete with homemade apple strudel.

Rhubarb01 · 19/10/2022 10:31

I admire your dedication @Tootyfilou. The best I can offer is that I've eaten the first of the stollen I bought from Lidl for Christmas. No willpower! 😀

Tootyfilou · 19/10/2022 12:32

@Rhubarb01 😁Lidl certainly is the place for German themed snacks! I had great fun making the picnic and love to delight my parents as they are so wonderful... I am very lucky. I can't wait for the next episodes.

SammyScrounge · 22/10/2022 00:51

I was exhausted just watching Charlotte in the dance marathon. It was well filmed.

OP posts:
Rhubarb01 · 22/10/2022 09:14

I know what you mean. I had visions of the dance marathon lasting six episodes with Gereon needing to throw in a Lindy Hop everytime he needed to speak to Charlotte, while she miraculously solved the case through the fog of exhaustion and delirium. Great dance scenes though, like a 1930's flash mob. But, I've got a bit of an ear worm today...Ein Tag wie Gold....

SammyScrounge · 22/10/2022 12:50

Me too - been humming it all morning. The actress/singer is really an outstanding performer. Mind you, they are all outstanding.

I keep going back to this on YouTube whenever I need a lift. It was so powerful and fascinating and grotesque and energising and sinister all at the same time. Genius.

friskybivalves · 22/10/2022 12:58

But for me the franchise almost peaked there and hasn't regained the heights since. Can't wait to watch the latest episodes!

DameHelena · 27/10/2022 09:38

Watched the first episode. What did Nyssen look like in his gold suit at the party? Shock Grin
I don't really know what's going on yet, but I guess that's first-episode-itis, where they're setting up all the potential characters and plot lines. I loved the acting, the look, the music, the architecture, the whole mis en scene, as always. It's so fantastically realised.
Sorry to be dim, but has Rath gone undercover with the National Socialists?

Winniewonka · 27/10/2022 14:12

@DameHelena - You'll have to watch episode 2 to find your answer😀
Series 4 is certainly living up to its predecessors.
I studied this time in German History as a student many years ago and the attention to detail is superb.
Not giving away any spoilers but I picked up on something which I think might be relevant to Charlotte later in the series.

DameHelena · 27/10/2022 14:20

Ah, I see! Thanks for that. Must be extra-fascinating for you having studied this period. I always think that it looks and feels very authentic, so it's good to hear that that IS the case.
