I must admit that I googled a historical detail at the end of the third series (relevant to Charlotte) out of curiosity, so I'm watching to see if that plays a part. Given the attention to detail, I can't think it was there for nothing. I think this series is very good at breathing life into some of the dry information which is often taught about the fall of the Weimar Republic and rise of the Nazis. It really shows what a boiling pot Germany was at that time.

Marvellous episodes tonight. And so many powerful plot lines: the dead street children, Litton appearing in court, Wendt's fury over the film, Nyssen and his mother, Helga and his mother, genuinely moving scene with Mr Hasselbach (?) and Widow Benke, and of course Charlotte and Gereon...
Very strong stuff tonight. The episodes were packed with goodies.

Ah, I see! Thanks for that. Must be extra-fascinating for you having studied this period. I always think that it looks and feels very authentic, so it's good to hear that that IS the case.

The lawyer Litten was a real person, the.first to take on victims of the Nazis and ultimately Hitler himself. Streseman was real too and the rebuilding of German Armed Forces illegally in Russia.

What is the secret transfer of street children to the island about?
Brown .shirts are coming more to the fore. Why is Gereon helping Stenne get out of prison - to prove his worth? And ruin Wendt with those photos? Is Wendt a Rohm figure? Or Stenne with his beer hall riot?
I am getting enjoyably lost in the labyrinthine plot. And worried about Mr Katelbach and Mrs Benke, newly romantic together but on the edge of destruction.
Helga and Mrs Nyssen were very good together in the barge. Nyssen will never know what hit him if his mother and Helga team up.
The Jewish family dinner gave me a real pang - they didn't know what was coming to them either.

I'm enjoying this series a lot. So many story strands. Ditto to the Sabbath meal...so poignant.

Bodies galore tonight.Charliotte provided a spectacularly killed one. In the kitchens of the children's home she fought with a guard and then finished him off by shoving him head first into a vat of boiling water. And she wasn't finished. She crashed into a meeting of the sinister White Hand who were holding kangaroo courts where prisoners are always guilty and face only one penalty. Disgusted, Charlotte opened fire on the trial. She wielded a gun in each hand and, and shrieking and waving her weapons, shot at 30 men who desperately tried to escape but were prevented by Gereon who arrived in the nick of time.
I found this a little hard to take. The boiled guard was forced into the vat.by dainty little Lotte. Attacking the White Hand was just as improbable. So out of character for Lotte?

SammyScrounge · 12/11/2022 13:00

SPOILERS. SPOILERS. SPOILERS

The second improbability was the murder of all the gang bosses by Edgar who wasn't dead after all. That the murders should have occurred in police HQ leaves Gereon with some fancy talking to do.
Mr Katelbach is still in prison and left unsure as to whether Widow Benke has accepted his proposal or not. Uncertain behaviour is also displayed by Miss Seegers. She saves Wendt's life in one of the most tense scenes in the show.
The most improbable aspect of tonight's episode is that Helga doesn't seem to mind Nyssen's newly dyed blonde curls.

Nyssen really is a character, not content with the gold suit and long bleached hair, the flares on his trousers are probably the most outrageous I've seen since the 1970's.

Was it Nyssen's mother that Boehm saw in the water when he was about to climb over the railings? It was so brief. I assumed it was her...but you never know!

I was wondering if it was her as well but it was too quick to be sure.

I can't think who else it could have been but it happened so quickly.

The finale of the series is on Friday night. 😫😫😫

OP posts:
Rhubarb01 · 19/11/2022 10:17

Well, still so many questions after the finale last night. Why has Helga dyed her hair to match Nyssen? Talk about the Howard and Hilda effect! Is his mother really dead, still not completely resolved. What does the future hold for Malu and Wendt? What next for Gereon? I can never decide if Dr Schmidt is real or not - how bizarre the ending was. What was that about? A nightmare or real?

The historical fact that I had looked into relating to Charlotte did finally appear when Trollman turned up and Charlotte and Gereon attended the boxing match, but I believe it ended rather differently, or possibly that was a later fight, but the real Trollman didn't have Gereon Rath in attendance. The story of what happened to Trollman is quite sad and the scenes did indicate how his achievements were received by the sporting world at that time.

I also had a google about the Sharfenberg Island school. It was an educational experiment which started in the 1920's following the theory of Wilhelm Blume and apparently there is still a school there today.

Rhubarb01 · 19/11/2022 10:18

Do we think there will be another season? It certainly looked as if the story was not over yet.

SammyScrounge · 19/11/2022 11:58

There has to be another season - they can't just leave it lying there! The blue uniformed men at the end - are they the dead waiting for Gereon? Or do they only exist in a.nightmare of Charlotte's? But she has never met the evil doctor so how could she dream him? Unless it's Gereon who is dreaming that Lottie is dreaming

As for Nyssen.- I thought he was turning into his mother (a la Psycho)with his hair styled like hers and his plaid cloak. But then Helga, hitherto the most down to earth of women, duplicated Nyssen's efforts to look like his Mutti too! What will Mutti make of this when she returns (I am convinced she will return).
This episode.was the end of a chapter, not the story.

Gereon and Wendt must battle to the end. Gereon must win so that he and Lottie may unite. They must find a way to adapt to being police officers under the Nazis.
There must be another series!

Rhubarb01 I looked up Johann Trollman after you told us that he was real. What a terrible story it is.

SammyScrounge · 19/11/2022 12:24

Historical background
Johann “Rukeli” Trollmann *, Sinti, born in 1907 in Wilsche near Hanover. He owes his Gypsy name, derived from ruk – ‘tree’
to the fact that he was tall as a boy and was known for his perfectly straight posture. Having achieved numerous successes as a boxer, at the end of the 1920s, he decided to turn professional. In the early 1930s, “Rukeli” was one of the best boxers in light-heavyweight in Germany. He participated in the fights organised at the historic Rote Flora theatre in Hamburg (this building today features the Stolperstein dedicated to his memory). In 1933 he became a German boxing champion. He was known throughout the country as a “dancing boxer”, but his ethnic origin became a reason for persecution. For instance, he was forced to fight like „a white man” – i.e. to give up his “dance” in the ring and just stand still. He continued to win. Since he was expected to behave like „a white guy” – he dyed his hair and stood to fight with a whitened face, which, as an act of open provocation, caused him enemies among the ranks of national socialists. He was quickly stripped of his title and finally was banned from boxing.

In 1935 he met his future wife Olga Frieda Bilga. Soon after that their daughter was born, but in 1938 Trollman was captured and locked up in the Hannover-Ahlem labour camp for several months. After being released, he was hiding, but in 1939 he was drafted into the Wehrmaht, and as a part of his infantry service he was stationed in Poland, Belgium and France until spring 1941, when he was sent to the eastern front. He is reported to return
in 1942 as a wounded man. According to other sources, he was released from the army for racial reasons. Soon, in the same year, he was sent to KL Neuengamme near Hamburg. He was quickly recognised and was forced to secretly train German guards at night. Forced labour during the day, hunger and night fights quickly affected his health. A group of prisoners managed to fake his death and smuggle him under a false identity to the neighbouring Wittenberge camp, which was a sub-camp for Neuengamme. Unfortunately, he was recognised there too. Probably the prisoners got him into a duel fight with a hated capo and former criminal Emil Cornelius. Even weakened, Trollmann won the fight, but the kapo killed him shortly after – according to one version Cornelius murdered him personally, knocking him to death with a shovel when he was returning after a full day of work.

The official cause of Trollmann’s death was reported as cardiac arrest, which allegedly happened on February 9, 1943 in KL Neuengamme. For the second time, this time for real, he was murdered in the Wittenberge sub-camp in 1944.

It was not until 2003 that the German Boxing Association returned Trollmann to the title of German Champion from 1933, and offered his family the championship belt.

The story of “Rukele” became a source of interest for the movement of artists from Berlin and Dresden called Bewegung Nurr. They dedicated to him a several-year-long project called “9841”, because this was the Trollmann camp number from the Neuengamme KL. As part of their activities, a website dedicated to the project was created. It contains Johann’s biography and documentation of the implementation of the 9841 project. The most important part of the project was the construction of a temporary memorial dedicated to the boxer.

They are trying to exploit you when they ought to be happy to have someone trustworthy. A relative of mine has two cats. She hated the idea of kennels and strangers looking after them. But a student she (and the cats) had known for years was glad to earn some money care for two animals she liked anyway.
She comes to stay for the full two weeks. My relative stocks her fridge/freezer and her kitchen cupboards with all kinds of goodies. The student can go out,of course, and the cats are happy. The student is happy with a generous pay packet. My relative is happy because the cats are well cared for, and also her house is lived in and not a target for burglars.
Drop these chancers. They don't value you and want everything on the cheap.

I've just finished series 4 just hours before it leaves Sky. I was a little disappointed in this series though. Plotwise, there were rather too many coincidences and loose ends. However, the cast and acting is still superb, there are so many fantastic characters, and the quirkyness of the dance and club scenes is wonderful.
And I was struck by how much the actress playing Toni looked like Harriet Walter.
