I dont know what it will be like. I suppose it happened when he left Cheers so maybe it will be a standalone comedy? www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2022/oct/05/frasier-is-back-in-the-building-sequel-series-greenlit-at-paramount

He's too old. Frasier as a sit com is so dated now. Why do they keep wheeling out people 60+ on TV and in politics here in the USA? We need new content in both areas not constantly old ideas warmed up.

Deadringer · 05/10/2022 14:31

I don't think it's dated at all, I was watching it this morning and found it hilarious. I don't know about a new series though, anything that's not completely amazing will disappoint fans.

hattie43 · 05/10/2022 14:32

I loved Frasier and hope it's as good as before .

To attract an older demographic. There are a lot of 60+ people in society who refuse to be invisible .

Won't be the same without Martin though. John Mahoney was a terrific actor.

Deadringer · 05/10/2022 14:34

Maybe history will repeat itself, Frasiar will have a fall or something and have to move in with his son Frederick.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 05/10/2022 14:34

Frasier (especially the first five or six series) is pretty much my favourite sitcom of all time.

However. I'm cynical about this new series. So much of the comedy in the original series was about the shallow, pick-me-dance refinement of Frasier and Niles butting up against the straight-talking attitudes of Martin. And now that John Mahoney has died, there can be no Martin. So I'm wondering if there will be enough of a foil to puncture Frasier's pomposity.

EachandEveryone · 05/10/2022 14:35

Oh i cant to see how Frederick turned out😃

Looking forward to this. I also think Frasier’s dated well. I still watch it & find it funny.

theDudesmummy · 05/10/2022 14:40

I fear it is not going to be the same and will be rather sad. I loved loved loved Frasier when it was on (and I am a psychiatrist, and found it such fun). But I don't want to see a new one. Maybe IABVU, I know. I know people age, but seeing Frasier, Niles, Roz etc old will just not be the same story at all. A different dynamic altogether. I have no problem with shows about older people (hell, I AM older people) but make a different show, don't remind us of how we have all aged since the 90's!

And no Martin (or Eddie!), that cannot work! And also, when I used to watch in the 90's I had no idea of Kelsey Grammer's politics. Now I do. Ugh.

When I clicked onto the link, right at the very bottom of the article, there’s another link to a lovely Guardian interview with David Hyde Pierce!

May I suggest you switch over to The Resident? I can assure you Daphne has had very good surgery and looks no older 😃😃😃😃 Niles has aged beautifully he is in Julia and is fabulous also in that is the wonderful Lilith who has aged with Grace.

It won’t work.

The whole idea of Frasier wasn’t just about him, it was the relationship between him, Nile’s, Roz, Daphne and Martin. And none of the other cast are expected to play any more than occasional roles.

It just won’t work without them.

I love love love Frasier but I won’t be watching this new series.

theDudesmummy · 05/10/2022 16:24

@MayThe4th I have to agree with you, having now read the articles. I see now the original cast are not even going to be in it much, so I guess my concern about trying to recreate a story about relatively young people's live but with late middle-aged people is probably not the main issue, nor the fact that they might look depressingly wrinkly. (Although I have had a look at Jane Leeves now and although she looks fab (she is 2 years older than me and certainly looks younger), she is not the Daphne of old, of course she isn't).

Now I think the issue will be that it won't really be "Frasier", because Frasier was not about Frasier, it was about the relationships between a group of people. I guess Grammer was Frasier in Cheers and Frasier in Frasier, so he has the idea that he can just inhabit the same character successfully whatever the surroundings. I still think it will be sad. Grammer could surely do something else? Or can he?

Willbe2under2 · 05/10/2022 16:29

Did you see this spoof trailer a few months ago? I'm still slightly disappointed this isn't where they're going with it...

nuttynotty · 05/10/2022 20:04

@Willbe2under2 I'm with you, that trailer looks amazing! Grin

dudsville · 05/10/2022 20:11

That trailer is hilarious. The show was fab and it ages well, and being older i like seeing older casts, so tired of coming of age and first romance stories, but I'm not keen on new versions of old shows so I'll watch and hope to be pleasantly surprised!

spongedog · 05/10/2022 21:04

Is he short of cash?

CoolShoeshine · 06/10/2022 08:05

The original Frasier was just so perfect and as other have said has aged remarkably well. It was probably a bit ahead of its time. I’m currently rewatching from the start on More 4 to try and find any episodes I may have missed over the years.
it will struggle without Martin, they’ll need to think of an inventive replacement character for him who gels with the rest of the cast. Heck knows what Frasier will do for a living now, so much of it was set at the radio station but surely a psychiatrist phone in wouldn’t be of interest to the general public nowadays? Perhaps he’ll be retired and younger characters such as Freddie will be more like the Frasier of old. There’s a lot of scope in today’s society for comedy from superficial, vain and pompous characters.
Hopefully it will be great, I’ll watch it anyway.

Nitgel · 06/10/2022 08:18

Kelsey Grammar school is a bit of a sleazebag and knowing that puts me off. I watched him on RHOBH and nope. I don't think appearing on that did him any favours.

EachandEveryone · 06/10/2022 08:25

Well he encouraged his wife to do it so he could make a swift exit. I don’t mind him at all.

Won't be the same without Martin though. John Mahoney was a terrific actor.

Did you ever see him in In Treatment? He was absolutely incredible.

theDudesmummy · 06/10/2022 08:32

Grammer is a fan of Putin, endorsed Trump, cheered on Brexit, is sceptical on climate change, and is anti-abortion. I didn't know all that back in the 90s. I won't be watching him this time round for those reasons alone.

FinallyHere · 06/10/2022 08:34

if there will be enough of a foil to puncture Frasier's pomposity.

I'm guessing that would be a role for the son, Frederick

Trees6 · 14/01/2023 11:14

I’ve just seen on Twitter that Nicholas Lyndhurst has been cast in the new series, as an old university friend of Frasier’s. I like him, so I’ll be interested to see how it pans out.

No news yet on whether the Niles, Daphne, Roz and Lilith actors will take part. I think they’ll need at least one of these for continuity and to draw in the maximum number of fans of the original “Frasier”.
