Series 2 starts tonight on BBC 1 but I've just spotted all episodes are on iPlayer already. I loved the first series, is anyone else watching?

Why is Harper living in the hotel and who is paying for it?

I don't know why she's living in the hotel - maybe it's just convenient - but you find out at the end of the series who paid for it.

I must have missed it but who paid for the hotel?

catfunk · 03/10/2022 22:01

Eric. He tells her in the lift just before the final scene of the series.

Kitkatcatflap · 03/10/2022 22:10

I wonder what Clement Cowan left Robert. He said a number of items.

Kitkatcatflap · 03/10/2022 22:29

maranella I felt that Yasmin's poor little rich girl storyline was a bit obvious but it's Industry. I do like her honesty. Her admitting she didn't know it was bonus time because she never checked her (Her Dad's) account. When Harper asks if she wants absolving from some rich white guilt Yasmin replies 'But I don't feel guilty' it wasn't said in an arrogant way. The story about her spending lockdown picking out the perfect white pyjamas and thinking it was probably the best summer she'd ever had was both funny and sad

When Kenny apologies for the way he treated her - she shrugs it off with a where you sit is a lottery, and I won the lottery in other areas. There is some self awareness.

I think she will be alright. She is well connected, has languages, her skills are her sociability - she knew Anna Gearing had moved to Germany with her German husband and her kids names. She introduced Kenny to the Italian guy.

Her Dad is a total knobhead. Do we think that Theresa's daughter is her sister?

Yes, those are all good points @Kitkatcatflap. I'd like to see some more self awareness from Yas, if there is a S3. I'm guessing that if a luxury life has been handed to you on a plate and you know no different, it must be hard to have much awareness of how everyone else lives.

Did she lose her job with Celine at the end? I can't recall exactly what was said. If so, she's jobless and homeless, which should be character-building, and Robert is the only one of the original crop of graduates left with a job at Pierpoint, if so.

Robert's heroin addict boss from S1.

Gilmorehill · 06/10/2022 15:04

It’s interesting that Rob was the only one left at Pierpoint when he was probably the least talented. This series has been brilliant. I have loved watching the development of the four characters. I ended up disliking Harper though.
I also love the fact that minor characters from the last series were weaved in, like Venetia (is that the right name) and the guy who kept chasing H for her transcript in the first couple of episodes.

I am trying to understand the 'technical' bits, but of course they could be complete hogwash!

ouch321 · 08/10/2022 08:24

POSSIBLE SPOILERS

I'm not sure this season was as good as the last.

I think it's a little try hard with some of the dialogue and attempts to be shocking with graphic sex and drugs.

I think Rishi is a good character but they were making him come out with so many Rishi-y lines in the background of scenes it feels a little parody ish.

Someone asked why Harper was staying in a hotel- well after she and Yasmin had their spat at end of s1 presumably she couldn't stay with her any longer so I think after that and during Covid she stayed at the hotel.

As to why Eric had H fired for faking her degree some online review said he was being kind to her by sacking her for that rather than for insider trading which would probs scorch her name more.

Do think s3 will happen.

maranella · 08/10/2022 08:52

I wondered about the insider trading too. As she told Eric what she'd done I think he HAD to get rid of her, because if [when] it comes to light, if he hadn't fired her immediately that would be a massive fine for the company. You can go to jail for insider trading, so that could add a bit of spice to S3.

Re: the insider trading - I found Harper's supposed ignorance around this very hard to believe. You have to take professional exams to work on a trading desk and insider trading is covered in the materials and you have to know those materials inside out. No way could she have spent three years working on a trading desk and not know that.

IloveGogglebox · 08/10/2022 09:31

Would someone be kind enough to explain all that IB talk that goes on?

I watch Industry but apart from the obvious storylines between them, when it comes to talking about their work my brain fries and I have no idea what is going on.
Maths and finance has never been my strong point so could someone dumb it down for me please?

IloveGogglebox · 08/10/2022 09:32

Fwiw - I'm on series 2 episode 5

GooseberryCinnamonYogurt · 08/10/2022 12:04

My problem is I can't see anything when it's filmed in the dark!

maranella · 08/10/2022 18:30

Harper works on an equities (stocks and shares) trading desk @IloveGogglebox. They buy them from someone looking to sell and they aim to sell them at a higher price, making money on 'the spread' i.e. the difference between those two prices. They also charge commission, or fees, for their services.

The equities desk is known as being the worst desk to work on, particularly as a woman. They've always had the worst reputation for misogyny, foul language and general sleaziness. If you want to get an idea of what it's was like to work on such a desk pre-MeToo, avail yourself of a copy of 'Bully Market' by Jamie Fiore Higgins about a woman who worked on that desk for Goldman Sachs in NY.

Before Yasmin moved to high net worth client banking, she worked for the FX desk. They trade foreign exchange in the same way i.e. buying and selling foreign currency (yen, dollars, euros, etc) and making money on the spread.

IloveGogglebox · 08/10/2022 20:14

Oh aren't you just wonderful @maranella. Thank you so much for explaining 😊
My brain can stop hurting now lol

witheringrowan · 09/10/2022 13:05

@ouch321 Yeah, I agree on the trying to hard with the sex and drugs.

And I'm also increasingly rolling my eyes at the two male showrunners - every time I see an interview they are talking about how toxic the world of IB is, the exploitation of new grads, and the failure to address sexual harassment complaints. But both of the young female leads in this show, both in their first major roles, are expected to do graphic sex scenes with gratuitous nudity pretty much every episode, and that's all OK, because it's art or something?

Just thinking back to the comments Emilia Clarke has made about how in retrospect she isn't comfortable with what she was asked to do in the early seasons of GOT. Maybe the actors playing Yas and Harper are completely fine with it all & will be in the future, and I really hope they are. But I don't think that there is really any narrative justification for them to be put in that position so often in the first place.

Agree, she would have known but hey it's a drama! Better to be fired for submitting a false degree than be imprisoned for IT. Great series, binged it this weekend, hoping for a S3.

Rollergirl11 · 13/10/2022 12:35

Haven’t finished series 2 but I’m really struggling to understand what the fuck is going on half the time.

SPOILERS FOR EPISODE 5&6

I can’t really remember the back story with Harper and her (twin?) brother other than he was a professional tennis player and I thought in series 1 that we assumed he was dead? And that the Mum was/is a piece of work. But from episode 5 it now seems like Harper is the person the brother has been running from all along?

Can someone please explain to me what happened when Harper was doing the deal for Jesse in episode 6 when she did the hand signals and she said that Rishi misunderstood whether she meant buy or sell? I assume she was being underhand and she did what she had already discussed with Jesse but I didn’t understand what the end result was and if that’s what Harper had intended or not. Rishi was totally pissed off and DVD weighed in but I couldn’t work out if he was on Harper’s side or not until he told her to get off his desk. Was that some insider trading?

maranella · 13/10/2022 18:06

@Rollergirl11 I think Harper told people in S1 that her DB was missing and possibly dead. That's what I remember anyway. But yes, what he said in S2 was that he was running away from Harper (rather than their DM - which is what we were led to assume before).

During the Jesse trade I assumed that Harper was using hand signals that were slightly ambiguous in order to deliberately shaft Rishi because a) she's a psycho, b) she doesn't give a shit about Rishi and c) she knows her only real value at Pierpoint is her relationship with Jesse. The insider trading was that the two of them acted on the info that she had gleaned from her conversation with Gus about the government healthcare deal.

Same. I don't understand the jargon at all. I find nearly all the characters rather unlikeable as well, but am finding it a fascinating watch. This is so far removed from my world that I have no idea if this is a true represenation of life in the financial sector in London or not.

As this thread contains some spoilers I admit to skipping reading some of the posts, so forgive me if I have missed something.

I'm currently watching episode 3 of series 2.

Kitkatcatflap · 15/10/2022 22:48

I remember Harper saying that her twin brother had gone missing in series one with a possible implication that it may have been a suicide. When she began texting in series 2 I knew it was the brother.

I think he was such a let down for her. Although she calls her mother for a pep talk in series 1 and sends her some of her first bonus cheque, she calls her Mother a fucking bitch. Her brother is the only person she shows any love or loyalty towards but he is a weak, self obsessed druggie. He blames Harper for encouraging him to go out and play, expecting her to guess he was struggling but anyone knows the amount of time, effort, focus, travelling and money it would cost to take a tennis player to that level.

Summerof22 · 16/10/2022 11:20

Just finished season 2 and I loved the ending.

Both Yasmin and Harper are some of the most loathsome characters I’ve ever seen.

I need to believe that I’m the real world, Harper would have been sacked at any stage in season 1. She kept making mistakes, sounding clueless and crossing the line way too many times. Hard to believe that a graduate would be given so many chances.

just when you start feeling a bit sorry for Yasmin, she goes and uses Robert for her personal gain again, and anyway, she kept saying she was knackered and asking for cocaine? I thought cocaine would be the last thing you’d take if you want a good night’s sleep.

I would watch season 3 to see if the writers manage to find some form of redemption for those 2 characters, they’re obviously able to write redemption. Kenny and Venetia were quite off putting in the beginning but turned out to be pretty decent people.

I think Robert gave up again because he know he’s worthless on his own and is would be out without that woman as a client.

in fact, from his previous boss, to Eric and Harper, they were all dependant on just one big client, which is pretty ironic in an industry that has ‘diversifying’ as one of its principles.

glad for Rishi in the end, he’s an idiot but at least he is great at his job.

its been announced there will be a series 3
