Anyone else excited.

oddly the daily Mail have totally changed their review of it overnight. Last night the article said it was a total turkey and would likely bankrupt Amazon studios. Poor acting, dire story lines, etc. couldn’t have been worse.

today it’s much more factual about what the show is about rather than really giving an opinion. I think Amazon have paid the DM off! 😂

I tried again with my 10 year old last night. Wanted to give it another go. Unfortunately he got bored halfway through, so we switched to Stranger Things. He loved all the LOTR movies and loves the Dark Crystal so we thought it would be similar. He was picking holes in it throughout and we ended up laughing about how cheesy it was. I think they'd have been better just creating a whole new fantasy series instead really as other have said.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 06/09/2022 14:18

LOTR book/film fan here. I was so disappointed with Episode 1 - boring, slow, predictable and nothing fresh or original, just a very expensive (moneymaking) hommage to everything that’s gone before. I hope it perks up in the coming episodes.

YourUserNameMustBeAtLeast3Characters · 06/09/2022 21:31

I found episode 2 better than episode 1, a lot better. I did not like the start of episode 1 - “this happened and then that happened and then that happened over there” - show don’t tell!!

The elves seemed far more mystical and ethereal in the original, here they are just acting like men and women with pointy ears. But by the end of episode 2 I did like Galadriel, and I think the actress is very good. Elrond is a definite no, really not getting elf vibes from him. The hobbit girls were very good.

Somebody has overlaid the opening credits with the theme tune from Kath & Kim. Which fits perfectly. Almost wonder if somebody on the inside did it on purpose! Hilarious...

PolkaDotMankini · 07/09/2022 17:46

I love the visuals but haven't been wowed by the story so far. Galadriel was a powerful leader from the beginning of the Silmarillion and definitely on a par with the high king. I also expect every single elf to be hot 😁

Wafflefudge · 08/09/2022 21:14

Im really enjoying it. Think Galadriel is great.
I am a fan of the books but haven't read Silmarillion.

FrippEnos · 11/09/2022 11:48

I was looking forward to this, but its so slow, some of the acting is wooden, and the Segway's between parts are just lumpy.

YourUserNameMustBeAtLeast3Characters · 11/09/2022 19:25

I found the third episode disappointing, too many characters now. Isildur’s sister really annoyed me, it was jarring, like you’d stuck someone in from a current soap.

LadyFromage · 12/09/2022 08:55

Me too.

Arondir is about the only character I give a damn about - and even then, not by much.

It's got the same problem as the House of the Dragon (imo) - so big a programme that it's been made by committee and so lacks any heart. Almost all the characters are so bland, so far.

JonSnowedUnder · 12/09/2022 11:34

I was bored and lost focus about half way through. Even if I tried watching it without LOTR expectations there's not much to it other than visually looking good. I don't like any of the characters so I'm not routing for anyone.

It all feels a little basic, the son not wanting to follow the path his father wants him to, the traveller getting into trouble with the locals, the strong female character who doesn't know how to be diplomatic to the point of being rude even though she is alone on an island, the young person who longs to get out and experience more than their village/tribe. Nothing feels new.

YourUserNameMustBeAtLeast3Characters · 12/09/2022 18:03

It’s like the fantasy/sci fi books that I hate, where you start with a huge number of characters and places and have to wait for it to all draw together, but get confused or bored in the meantime.

Much better when it starts more focused on person/small group of people in one place then grows from that. Like the original books actually!

PolkaDotMankini · 12/09/2022 19:13

I find Galadriel bloody rude and annoying. She's a thousand years old but acts like a stroppy teenager.

PolkaDotMankini · 12/09/2022 19:13

Elendil is very easy on the eye though.

Rhaenys · 13/09/2022 00:09

Just got round to watching the latest episode despite it first airing 3 days ago. Says a lot really. What a shame.

Also has anyone else found some of the acting to be quite poor?

IceandIndigo · 13/09/2022 12:41

The jury's still out for me. It looks beautiful, but the storytelling feels a bit lazy with many minor plot holes (a cow who just happened to wander a full day's journey away; Arondir crawling down the tunnel to find out what had made it and then retreating in panic at the first sign of anything; Elrond and Celebrimbor turning up at the dwarf kingdom unannounced, with nothing but the clothes on their backs).

I also find it's disappointing that they decided to humanise the elves. They are literally just humans with pointy ears - underlined by the scene where Galadriel boarded the raft with the humans and they couldn't tell she was an elf until one of them pulled back her hair! They are supposed to have amazing agility and lightness of movement. Also, if they are immortal and don't age, surely all the actors should be under 35 or so.

PuppyMonkey · 16/09/2022 08:44

I see I’m in the minority here, but just to say I am really really enjoying this. That last episode with the hottie and his fellow captives trying to escape from the pit - loved it!

nohopenoharm · 16/09/2022 17:06

Watched episode 4 this morning and thought it was brilliant, each episode has been better than the last and this one really picked up the pace and ran with it! The visuals and the music are just incredible. Loved the wave scenes and the scene in the forest escaping from the Orcs. "Adar" is going to be a fascinating character I think.

Really excited for the next episode now!

PuppyMonkey · 16/09/2022 17:42

Yay, just you and me loving it @nohopenoharm

PuppyMonkey · 16/09/2022 17:58

Although I just realised I haven’t actually watched ep 4 yet so now I must put that right immediately

peaceandove · 21/09/2022 20:46

I am a huge Tolkien fan and own copies of everything he ever wrote. I was beyond excited to watch TROP. But it is just so.........dull. Visually it is glorious. But the plot is weak and slow. So slow.

So disappointed.

Mumsnut · 21/09/2022 20:51

Elrond's chin ...

And TV Weatherman hair ...

peaceandove · 21/09/2022 22:20

Yep. I think Elrond borrowed his wig from Ron Burgundy.

hattymattie · 02/10/2022 21:02

This finally hit its stride - episode 6. Anybody else watching or have you all given up?

escapingthecity · 02/10/2022 21:14

I am hooked. I like the slow pace and shifting focus between the different groups.
But did I miss something in the most recent episode? How did the chap who put Sauron's sword-key thing into the stone get hold of it?
