New drama starts sun and mon for 1&2

then 3&4 following week on Sunday and Monday

the lovely Nicola Walker and Sean Bean

The acclaimed British actors play Ian and Emma, who are a couple navigating the ups and downs of their 30-year partnership.

They are parents to Jessica (Chantelle Alle) and are dealing with their fears and insecurities as the drama explores the risks and gifts of a long-term relationship.

Marriage on BBC1 sees married couple Ian (Sean Bean) and Emma (Nicola Walker) negotiate the ups and downs of their 27-year marriage. They've dealt with all the insecurities, the ambiguities, the hopes and the fears that are part of all marriages. The drama explores the risks and the gifts of a long-term intimate relationship.

When we first meet married couple Ian and Emma they’re in a Spanish airport returning from a lovely holiday — and bickering over a baked potato! By the time they’re on the plane it’s a full blown argument, setting the scene for what’s to come in this four-part series.

And I thought he was trashing her bosses car

Housewife2010 · 22/08/2022 08:10

I didn't understand the car incident.

butterpuffed · 22/08/2022 08:21

I didn't catch what led up to the car being trashed [just went to fetch something !] . Whose car was it and why did Ian do it ?

I'm not sure whether the acting oddly with people has always been a 'thing' with him or whether he's bored and trying to make conversation or whether he's having a breakdown.

Jamie is vile. Emma's ideas are probably good ones which he's dismissing out of hand as he knows she's better at the job than him .

PuppyMonkey · 22/08/2022 08:45

The car was slimy boss car.

Ian drove to the conference to see Emma probably and/or catch her with slimy boss, but then was reminded about slimy boss going on and on about his precious car so trashed the car in anger/jealous rage.

LadyEloise1 · 22/08/2022 08:45

It's still soooo boring.
Why am I bothering to watch. 🤷‍♀️

SapphosRock · 22/08/2022 09:19

So I've gathered Jess is attracted to men who talk and communicate well as that's what her dad doesn't do.

Emma is scared about losing her job as she is worried about money after Ian's redundancy. That's why she is trying with the awful Jamie.

Housewife2010 · 22/08/2022 09:31

@PuppyMonkey thank you

I really enjoyed it last night. It's definitely growing on me and I'm looking forward to the final episode tonight. I don't really understand why so many people who hate it keep watching it. I might give a programme a second chance if I wasn't sure after the first episode, but if I wasn't enjoying the second episode I'd give up. I keep seeing comments online about how people hate it and that it's "four hours of my life I'll never get back". It's not compulsory viewing.

SueSaid · 22/08/2022 09:50

'keep seeing comments online about how people hate it and that it's "four hours of my life I'll never get back".

I know, you pretty much get from the first scenes what it is going to be like, slow but an intrical portrayal of the behaviour of people who are flawed but still seem to care a great deal for each other.

My only criticism would be Jamie seemed so miscast, an older charismatic man would have been better rather than an obnoxious kid who shouted at people.

I quite liked it.

midsomermurderess · 22/08/2022 09:59

I got the impression that Jamie has taken on what had been his family’s (father’s?) business. Odd to question the writer’s creation of this character. If he’d have wanted a charismatic older man, don’t you think he’d have written that? He clearly intended Jamie to be a creepy, predatory, inadequate wide-boy.

Iain had been ringing Emma repeatedly but he’s calls kept going to voice mail. That triggered his insecurity so he drove to the conference hotel, saw Jamie’s car and went a bit radge on it.

SueSaid · 22/08/2022 10:04

'Odd to question the writer’s creation of this character.'

Well, it's a thread discussing and critiquing the drama. Many many people have said it's a load of crap. My opinion is it is a really clever look into the lives of people who have endured a lot but are still obviously very close. The Jamie character just spoilt it a bit. Imo.

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/08/2022 10:06

Assume cctv in car park

wonder why Jessica didn’t try and call her mum or maybe she dud and got voice mail

Ian drive to course as jealous and her phone kept going to am

Critique away, but I maintain it’s odd to say that that character should have been completely different. The writer intended him to be what he was. And Emma as we were shown, with her ideas and ambition, had to put up with it, that was one of the strands of her life. Her job would have been very different had her boss been an older, charismatic man.

You remind me of some posters talking about Motherland and pretty much saying the writers had got it wrong by giving Anne a previously high-powered job. Surely that should have been Meg. What can you do?

SueSaid · 22/08/2022 10:20

'Critique away, but I maintain it’s odd to say that that character should have been completely different.'

Hmm so is it odd that many have said its crap, perhaps they shouldn't question
the writer's writing?!

We're all just sharing opinions..

the80sweregreat · 22/08/2022 10:31

If you watch the writers other tv dramas / sit coms he always has creepy awkward men characters and nasty manipulative horrible women in them. They are the cartoon version of people we do come across in real life.

LadyEloise1 · 22/08/2022 11:43

How did she exit the bedroom at the hotel, will we see that tonight ?
How nasty is Jamie. He was so disparaging of Emma to the intern when she was in his apartment.
I too think he inherited the father's business. But he will ruin it because of his own over estimation of himself ( and under estimation of others' ability ).
I've met a few Jamies. Horrible people.

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/08/2022 12:48

I assume she walked out the door lol

def no hanky panky going on

OP posts:
the80sweregreat · 22/08/2022 14:04

I doubt Emma did anything with the horrible cake eating / drug taking Jamie

Housewife2010 · 22/08/2022 14:06

I thought it was awful when he went to the loo with door open when she was in his room.

the80sweregreat · 22/08/2022 14:25

Jamie is horrible .
I really felt for Ian having to look at that car
He really didn't want to.

MuddlerInLaw · 22/08/2022 14:43

Seriously, how can anyone not find this riveting? Grin I was on the edge of my seat for the entire hour!

I absolutely love the way they don’t spell everything out - forcing the viewer to keep up make leaps from one idea to the next. Although … When Emma said something I won’t write because spoilers - I wondered if it was about to turn into a different sort of show.

It’s very focused - limited number of characters. Wondering if that’s an authorial thing or a budget thing.

<Deletes whole paragraph of spoiler-y speculation.>

Will cross my fingers that the final episode won’t be all revelations.

LookdeepintotheParka · 22/08/2022 16:42

@butterpuffed Emma's experience at the conference resonated with me as I'm treated like that at work sometimes. The writer's observation of 'boring' middle aged women with ideas being shot down or overlooked made me feel a bit teary.

I think it's really clever but not easy viewing. It's making me squirm at times with the uncomfortable relationships between all the characters.

SapphosRock · 22/08/2022 21:25

Just open the letter FFS

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/08/2022 22:00

Glad Jessica left boyfriend

Jamie's sobbing over his car at counselling

I did think Jessica was very rude on phone ignoring her dad at home

Amazed at Emma talking to her boss like that

The letter was sweet. Wonder what it said

But again conversation very stilted

Almost like watching a programme that they ad lib

Wonder why she came to them at 8

What happened to her birth parents

Dabbing cream on his leg/groin
crease

Couldn't he have rubbed in his self

Glad Emily's dad went to the office

Emily has clocked that her mum works and still managed to cook a meal for 4

Where as Ian does bugger all

So we find out about Nicholas

6mth preg when she gave birth so guessing he didn't live a few days drowning is 23/24w preg

I did think Jessica was a bit insensitive
to keep asking

But also sounds like they had never spoken About him

Jessica was right. They didn't tell the truth. Yet when did she didn't like it

But she couldn't see that Adam was controlling

Hope there isn't a s2 but if there is I shall be compelled to watch and moan about it 😂

As soon as ending title music started I muted
