Blondeshavemorefun · 09/08/2022 14:29

New drama starts sun and mon for 1&2

then 3&4 following week on Sunday and Monday

the lovely Nicola Walker and Sean Bean

The acclaimed British actors play Ian and Emma, who are a couple navigating the ups and downs of their 30-year partnership.

They are parents to Jessica (Chantelle Alle) and are dealing with their fears and insecurities as the drama explores the risks and gifts of a long-term relationship.

Marriage on BBC1 sees married couple Ian (Sean Bean) and Emma (Nicola Walker) negotiate the ups and downs of their 27-year marriage. They've dealt with all the insecurities, the ambiguities, the hopes and the fears that are part of all marriages. The drama explores the risks and the gifts of a long-term intimate relationship.

When we first meet married couple Ian and Emma they’re in a Spanish airport returning from a lovely holiday — and bickering over a baked potato! By the time they’re on the plane it’s a full blown argument, setting the scene for what’s to come in this four-part series.

looks good

Well, I prefer not to know if it's going to get better/worse. Just to add another opinion. It is TV pace and I want to hear about TV pace.

swimlyn · 18/08/2022 18:22

Better or worse is just a pov though, innit?

😃

LadyEloise1 · 18/08/2022 18:27

"better or worse" - I thought you were talking about the marriage vows 😂

Housewife2010 · 18/08/2022 15:54

I don't think there's anything wrong with people saying that the later episodes are better or that it picks up. To me a spoiler is if they tell us about what actually happens. To be told that later episodes are good, doesn't affect my enjoyment.

To be fair they couldn’t be any worse than 1&2

Halfway through episode 2 and I'm in the 'like it' camp.

I think that review sums it up perfectly so far.

I haven't seen any contemporary theatre for reference!!

Housewife2010 · 18/08/2022 20:21

As a potato obsessive, I was more concerned that Ian made such a fuss about jacket potatoes. They are in my top 5 favourite foods, but unless the food stall was obviously selling them and they were crispy from the oven, a poorly advertised one would be more likely to be flaccid from the microwave with maybe that unfortunate old potato taste. Far better then to have chips, but definitely with HP rather than the lesser ketchup!

MichaelAndEagle · 18/08/2022 20:25

I think one thing I'm guilty of is watching TV and also scrolling on my phone.
Awful habit, I really need to stop.

With this, because nothing much is really happening, I need to actually watch it actively so I see what I'm supposed to be seeing if you know what I mean.
The story is in the pauses, looks etc.

I must stop this habit, its mindless.

the80sweregreat · 18/08/2022 20:28

I scroll through mumsnet whilst watching tv
I often post things and then get flamed .. that didn't happen like that , etc
I have a phone addiction ! I need to break it

Housewife2010 · 18/08/2022 20:35

I'm the same. I sometimes charge my phone in another room when I'm watching TV. It stops me from mindlessly reaching out and scrolling.

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/08/2022 13:18

@MichaelAndEagle @the80sweregreat @Housewife2010 I do the same

ESP if on tv thread tv pace and it’s something omg

but then if typing I’m missing what’s on next 😂

I think 3&4 this weekend we will need to concentrate

OP posts:
MichaelAndEagle · 20/08/2022 16:16

I have actually watched them all now and got a lot more out of them by actually concentrating. So maybe that's a lesson to me!
I'm sure when the writers, actors etc have put so much into it, they'd prefer us to watch it properly.
No way would I sit on my phone in a theatre or cinema.

the80sweregreat · 20/08/2022 16:18

No, I agree that at the cinema or theatre the phone is off! The tv indoors I find so difficult..
I'm not sure why. I need to work on my 'phone addiction. '!

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/08/2022 20:07

@the80sweregreat ditto

I thought that Maxine may have gone to the bathroom to compose herself having been unsettled by Ian. Maybe she avoided telling her fiancé about her weird encounter because she was afraid that he would remonstrate with Ian, maybe even thump him, rather than listen and sympathise. Perhaps he is controlling too.

I don’t think any of Nicola Walker’s costumes in this will be selling out like that Sandro coat, amongst other things, that she wore in The Split! They are drab and ill-fitting. The Style & Beauty board on here would have a field day. She’s given up and taken a “that’ll do” approach.

Their house is a decent size but so messy and featureless. Again, i can imagine the regulars on the Property board on here telling her to declutter and repaint.

It is very realistic. Nuanced.

the80sweregreat · 21/08/2022 13:16

The red jacket was half price (online sale )
He complained about the Ketchup price in episode one.
They were either just tight for money after his job loss or his always been like that without being any real need for it.

midsomermurderess · 21/08/2022 14:20

I wondered with her drugs diatribe, if her brother was a user and that's why he was so keen to avoid her.

Hbh17 · 21/08/2022 14:59

I don't understand how anyone could find this boring - I was riveted and just hinged the whole 4 hours.
Every little moment was a perfect detail (I love the fact that they are both always picking up litter). I see it as an affectionate & supportive marriage, where each one has had cause to support the other over the years - ie just like real life. They care about their daughter; they make an effort with Emma's difficult dad and each one of them tries to protect the other. There is so much nuance and every interaction is important, particularly when nothing is said - in fact, especially when nothing is said. We are left with a few loose ends, true - but, again, that's just like life.

Proof that you don't need car chases & shoot outs for drama, just a great script with characters we care about & good actors.

Hbh17 · 21/08/2022 15:00

"binged the whole 4 hours"

the80sweregreat · 21/08/2022 15:05

This isn't a spoiler thread !..
There is a thread for spoilers and those who have binged watched it on telly addicts.
Come over to that

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/08/2022 21:32

It’s slightly better then last week.

will reply at 10

Y
Tried to watch again. The conversations are so jerky and disjointed.

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/08/2022 22:06

Shower gel gate

Another fictaxtion

And chatting to people. The gym lady. The shop assistant

Weird bland chats

Gym lady Maxine obv didn't want to be with him so sent male

Jamie obv wasn't interested in her ideas at the conference

He's horrible

Car deserved to be trashed 😂🙀

Ian's friend /neighbour didn't want to chat to him as collected parcel

So we know Emma is adopted - guessing after their son died ? Unusual to place with diff colour family or was it diff years ago

Emma deserves better. Hurrying her about a wee

He Checks her phone. Def controlling

Mark the barman seems nice

First cuddle /sign of affection they showed sitting down

And Jessica feels she could marry and have a lifetime of laughing

That's marriage

Not how her parents marriage is but maybe should be

OP posts:
the80sweregreat · 21/08/2022 22:34

I found the car smashing scene quite shocking
I expected her to mention it to Ian , but she didn't !

the80sweregreat · 21/08/2022 22:35

He really did humiliate Ian over his car though !
So maybe he did deserve it ..

mikado1 · 21/08/2022 22:44

My TV is very dark....I couldn't work out who was trashing the car...was it daughter's boyfriend? Jamie absolutely awful. Ian depressed surely... sounds like he has been a great support for her...maybe the marriage not as hopeless as looked originally?
