Blondeshavemorefun · 09/08/2022 14:29

New drama starts sun and mon for 1&2

then 3&4 following week on Sunday and Monday

the lovely Nicola Walker and Sean Bean

The acclaimed British actors play Ian and Emma, who are a couple navigating the ups and downs of their 30-year partnership.

They are parents to Jessica (Chantelle Alle) and are dealing with their fears and insecurities as the drama explores the risks and gifts of a long-term relationship.

Marriage on BBC1 sees married couple Ian (Sean Bean) and Emma (Nicola Walker) negotiate the ups and downs of their 27-year marriage. They've dealt with all the insecurities, the ambiguities, the hopes and the fears that are part of all marriages. The drama explores the risks and the gifts of a long-term intimate relationship.

When we first meet married couple Ian and Emma they’re in a Spanish airport returning from a lovely holiday — and bickering over a baked potato! By the time they’re on the plane it’s a full blown argument, setting the scene for what’s to come in this four-part series.

looks good

There seems to be a style of leading up to a scene but then not showing us the actual scene, which I'm finding frustrating. I've watched 3 episodes now and it keeps on happening. I'm certainly not finding it relaxing TV, i constantly feel on edge watching them.

Faircastle · 15/08/2022 22:37

Watching episode 2 now. There's an awful lot of dick-swinging.

the80sweregreat · 15/08/2022 22:31

They haven't much money , so everything they buy is cheap or in the sales etc.
The jacket was half price

I didn't pick up on that. The shit jacket looks like something she'd pick up in a Marie Curie shop in the back of beyond. for a couple of quid. My grandmother in her 70s wouldn't be seen dead in it.

cakeorwine · 15/08/2022 22:47

£3 extra for avocado?

Sod that....

SheilaWilde · 15/08/2022 22:48

I was looking forward to this. Just started watching it on iPlayer and it's so awful. The script, the acting, the cinematography, editing - everything! It's like a poor am dram but nowhere near as good. James Bolan is such a great actor but in this he's lost. I can see the intention but the end product is just very bad. The director and producer have done very poor jobs. I'm going to carry on with 'The Secrets She Keeps'.

FunkedUp · 15/08/2022 23:01

It's all the faffing about and jumping from one scene to a completely different one
And sitting in cars...
And faffing about in the hallway
Seriously painful to watch, it's the first time I've ever watched SB in something, never been a fan of him and now I know why. He's a creepy sod, just something 'off' about him and totally miscast in this

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/08/2022 23:20

They spent some of his redundancy on a holiday

but worry about £3 avocado

Totally agree but surely that's the point?! In which case it's excellent casting.

There's an awful lot of women avoiding confrontation with men. Maxine hiding from Ian in the leisure centre, Emma refusing to accept Ian's jealousy, Jessica going along with the creepy boyfriend's gaslighting.

mikado1 · 15/08/2022 23:27

Me too UrsulaPandress .... watched to see how depressing they were, only to think they're actually quite friendly.. :/

vroom321 · 15/08/2022 23:52

Watched all 4 episodes today. Agree with the crappy clothes!!!

Pemba · 16/08/2022 00:23

Well I liked the first episode but I was in a different mood tonight, and they all really annoyed me. There seems to be some affection between the couple, and they were supportive of the daughter at her gig, apart from that there is a lot of nastiness going around (the daughter's boyfriend, Emma's coworkers)and no one seems to have proper conversations.
People do have difficulties in their relationships but they do have conversations in real life!

I absolutely hate her father, miserable old git! He is demanding, but seems to have no affection for his daughter, and hates his son-in-law. James Bolam is doing well though, he's 87 now apparently!

The very avant garde theme 'music' is jarring and intrusive, the spoken voices cropping up inside a scene are confusing. It belongs as the music for a contempory dance recital or something, not a down to earth drama.

But ah well I shall plough on with it now as halfway through. I love Nicola Walker. Sean Bean is so weird in this, normally he's quite attractive. That's good acting I suppose

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 16/08/2022 00:33

Thanks to this thread I am now hooked on Him and Her, absolutely brilliant 😂

purpleme12 · 16/08/2022 01:50

I don't think it's bad.
I mean it's not supposed to be exciting.
But there music at the end is very jarring. I don't really get why they've chosen it

the80sweregreat · 16/08/2022 07:13

I v e only ever seen one episode of ' him and her ' which is odd as it has Ricky champ and Russell Tovey in it and I like both actors a lot.
Mum is tv gold.

the80sweregreat · 16/08/2022 07:20

I feel that Emma is hiding a lot from Ian in order to avoid any confrontation with him : she can't deal with his emotions about his jealousy which is unfounded.
He is also tight with money , never an attractive feature in anyone.

Deleting because we're concerned this is a spoiler.

the80sweregreat · 16/08/2022 08:21

Maybe the tidying up down stairs is for show , but upstairs shows the real chaos of their lives ?
Everything is undone and not properly sorted out in their heads, but keep downstairs straight and tidy for when anyone comes round ?

Netaporter · 16/08/2022 08:29

I actually enjoyed ep2. I liked the mundane details, the bedroom and house becoming more untidy as Ian’s depression worsens, the accumulation of clutter in Jessica’s bedroom. Surprise appearance by Jackie Clunes (Mrs Lamb in Motherland) as the genetic middle manager who has total disregard for anyone’s feelings. Sadly I can identify with a parent like the controlling Dad and batshit bitter brother - my mother is like this, nothing to say except when there is an audience and then massive performance parenting 🙄.

The clothes are part of Emma’s persona I think, all safe nondescript choices (red jacket aside) and if you look, none of them fit quite right.

Jamie is a complete wanker, that poor actor seems to always be cast as a tosser 😂. Might watch the last two and catch up with you all next week on this thread.

SapphosRock · 16/08/2022 08:48

Either I missed a lot or the 2nd, 3rd and 4th from last posts all contain spoilers Angry

We are only discussing episodes 1 and 2.

kittybloom · 16/08/2022 08:52

I’m struggling with it after 2 episodes.

Title music - perhaps it is supposed to deliberately jar after the quiet mundaneness but I don’t think it works and just leads to jumping for the remote control twice to turn then (and then to have to turn up again). Irritating.

Male characters - all grim and controlling in their own ways. Not balanced for me. Even Jamie mansplained her lunch choice.

Jamie / office - that set up is so unrealistic if it is supposed to be a firm of solicitors. Really don’t see Jamie as a partner / head of team. I personally don’t think that particular office set up exists anymore post Covid / remote working, it didn’t feel realistic for a probate firm.

But weirdly I know I will watch the remaining two episodes so perhaps it has drawn me in. Loved Mum.

The most powerful scene was the bench scene at the graveyard. That was very good.

Although I think SB and NW are both amazing actors, the age gap doesn’t work and I don’t understand why they go from passive aggressive silence and rows to manic laughter.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 16/08/2022 09:43

Whoops, sorry.

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/08/2022 10:36

Glad I didn’t see the spoilers and removed

please please please if you have seen 3&4 don’t comment on stuff that we haven’t seen /been shown

I'm not wasting anymore time on this crap, I just don't care enough🤷🏻‍♀️

Thesearmsofmine · 16/08/2022 11:41

We watched the second one last night, I don’t think I’ll watch any of the others. It has nothing to draw you in to want to find out more and the theme music is just so bad that I don’t want to hear it again.

purpleme12 · 16/08/2022 11:43

I just can't really understand why they'd choose that theme music
