wanting to take my 9 and 11 year old to see the new Elvis movie. Anybody seen it and is it appropriate for that age group? Thanks

Its age 12A rating. There are no sex scenes in it, mild drug use (mainly administered by his doctor), drinking scenes, they do depict the racial segregation at the time which I found hard to watch even though it was handled sensitively in my opinion but other than that, I'd say a 12 A rating was quite appropriate.

I loved it, made me really emotional. I wouldn't take the 9 year old but that's up to you.

I think nearly 3 hours may be too long for them, but you know your children best.

It was excellent though and I can see why Elvis fans got emotional.

It looks brilliant, a question to those that's seen it, yes his manager may not have been the best, but would you say it's true that without Elvis manager then we would not have the Elvis we know ?

I absolutely loved this movie. I adore Elvis and I love Baz Lurherman's style of filmmaking.

It was fast, pacey and the acting was superb. Would highly recommend to anyone.

I think it's more the drug references that makes it a 12a - there wasn't much bad language or sex. Your 11 year old would be fine I think, not so sure about the 9year old personnally.

It’s an incredible film as an adult but I don’t think a child would get it at all.

Just back from it with 4 friends and, if I'm honest, it is really long and I think your dc would be bored stiff.

I was born in the late 60s so Elvis was still playing regularly on radio and TV while I was growing up. I came out feeling sorry for Elvis, but far from emotional and was glad it had finished as it dragged on a bit. Austin Butler was very good in parts. I am a massive Tom Hanks fan, but I think he was dreadful, he irritated me throughout the whole movie - he was flat and boring. All 4 of us had roughly the same opinion, one of my friends work colleague saw it last night and said she fell asleep half way through it.

I wouldn’t take kids. I saw it age 35 and didn’t get it at all, yes was lots of his music but I didn’t understand the plot and was bored, not everyone stayed through the full film. Take the kids to see the minions one instead.

Sounds like you saw an older version, this new Elvis film has just come out.

I honestly dont know how you could fall asleep during it! Its action packed and visually beautiful. It is a long film and I went to the toilets afterwards and several women who were watching it too commented to me whilst in the toilet how amazing they found it, and one was crying she loved it so much. So, my experience was the complete opposite

I saw this last week after a long and tiring day, and whilst I thought it was terrific I was definitely struggling by the last 30-40 minutes, and I wouldn't expect children to sit through it without complaint. Maybe if you can find a teatime showing?

I do plan to see it again when I'm not quite as tired Smile

It's very sanitised, bit like bohemian rhapsody insofar not really going into graphic detail of the sex, drugs and booze abuse. Entertaining enough though

Yes the 3 hours would be the deciding factor for me too.

I thought it was brilliant and am planning to see it again

Is it really 3 hours ?
Or is that including the trailers and adverts ?

It is. With the time added on for trailers and ads, I was in the cinema for slightly over three hours which meant just after 2330 on a 2030 start time and getting in just after midnight (thankfully I didn't fall asleep on the Central line).

I said nearly 3 hours. Running time is 160 minutes, which makes it 2 hours and 40 minutes, so close to 3 hours for me, but probably an eternity for a 9 and 11 year old who know very little about Elvis.

Felt like 4 😴💤, thankfully we went for the premier seats so could move about a bit.

Saw it last weekend and loved it. Thought Austin Butler was tremendous.
I definitely wouldn’t take kids that age though…I think they’d be bored.

Worried about the falling asleep comments!

It's an incredible film especially for a fan. Brilliant acting from both AB and TH. Austin makes an amazing Elvis and Tom's portrayal of the Colonel is absolutely on point. It's a fast, pacey film in the BL style. It has some difficult scenes to watch from an emotional viewpoint. The ending was very moving and emotional. I think much of the film would be lost on a 9 year old however, the 2hrs 40 mins, absolutely flew by. Hiw anybody could claim to have fallen asleep during this films is beyond me... It's an amazing film.
