Anyone else watching it? The reviews are terrible but I'm loving it - lots of fun and the live scenes are great.

Watched 2 tonight, I'm enjoying it too, apart from Dh going "who's that then?" every 2 minutes.

Theimpossiblegirl · 04/06/2022 00:04

Tell him to Google...
I really enjoyed it, so much young talent in one place.

QueefofSheena · 04/06/2022 00:05

I haven’t seen it yet, I’m a bit conflicted as I like Steve Jones but I’m aware of the legal wrangles over it. I hope they haven’t glorified SV too.

Thelikelylass · 04/06/2022 00:11

I binge watched it, it's great fun I really enjoyed it even if it is a bit panto.
It's more that it brought all those memories back of being a kid and remembering jus how shocking they were.

LetsGoCrazyPurpleBanana · 04/06/2022 13:12

Loving it so far. Only seen the first 2 episodes. Check out Sid and Nancy with Gary Oldman if you haven't already. 👍

TheClitterati · 05/06/2022 21:26

I'm on ep 4 & I'm loving it.

Something very disconcerting watching a period drama set in my lifetime.

PermanentTemporary · 07/06/2022 07:45

Something else I'm noticing is that the effect of punk on the fans and the circle around the band is focusing entirely on women. It's interesting because there were a lot of blokes d'un certain age for whom punk was everything and who wrote about its role in their lives. But this is absolutely all about the impact of punk on women. As well as the central roles given to Vivienne Westwood and Christie Hynde. Makes me think about Viv Albertine's books which I loved and also seeing Poly Styrene and others on TOTP.

The book by Steve Jones that it's based on is 99p on Kindle atm.

PermanentTemporary · 07/06/2022 21:51

Thank you @Cocolapew - loved it!

We’ve finished it tonight and really enjoyed it. I was 7 when the Sex Pistols became famous and remember just how shocked and disgusted people were by them and punks in general.

One of my favourite ever films!
I really enjoyed Pistol, thought the acting was superb and I loved the gritty 70s filming style.

👍😁

Going off on a tangent slightly but if you like these type of films, have you seen "Dogs in space" with Michael Hutchence"?

MermaidEyes · 09/06/2022 09:40

LetsGoCrazy yes!!! He used to be my idol! That was also one of my favourite films 😁

DeusInAbsentia · 09/06/2022 12:08

DS has been raving about this, need to watch!

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 09/06/2022 12:13

I'm really enjoying it! Yes it's over the top style wise but it is Danny Boyle. I think the reviews are unfair. Only watched three so far but recommend it.

LetsGoCrazyPurpleBanana · 09/06/2022 14:39

Last episode for me tonight. Really enjoyed it. I preferred Pistol's version of Nancy to the Sid and Nancy movie version. Much less brash. Of course I've no idea which was more accurate. Still hard to believe they were only 20 and 21 when they died :(

TheClitterati · 09/06/2022 14:42

I really don't understand why its getting bad reviews.

I think its brilliant Johnny objected to it and thought it was shit even though I don't think he had watched it when he was objecting. Seems to be completely in character for him to do so - well going by the film anyway. Grin

Hopefully JR will tell his story of the Sex Pistols in a series too.

I do think its astonishing Westwood became so proudly establishment with her Damehood.

I'm a bit uncomformatble with all these 18+ rated "Disney" Star shows sitting so closely to Moana on my telly.

That's funny because I actually preferred Chloe Webb's version! If you're into reading have you ever read 'And I don't want to live this life' by Deborah Spungen, Nancy's mother? It's a fascinating and heartbreaking read.

I've not read this and I'm kicking myself for not knowing about this book. Off to have a look now. Thank you :)

Ok I’m two in and I bloody love it. I think it helps that I was born in the early 70s so just about recall the shock value of the punks at the time.

it’s funny because the Sex Pistols we’re a band I always knew but never knew much about embarrassingly, so the whole insight into the movement is fascinating. Absolutely love the portrayal of Jordan, and Thomas Brodie Sangster is perfect as Malcom.

started reading Chrissie Hyndes autobiography on the back of this and will read Steve Jones later.

The poor reviews are baffling, unless it’s John Lydon running a smear campaign. The irony of a man who sold butter on the telly trying to stop this from going ahead because it was against everything they stood for is not lost on me.

Calmasulike · 14/06/2022 07:39

I loved it and couldn’t understand John Lydon’s opposition. After finishing it It got me really thinking about the hypocrisy of the 70’s. The moral outrage regarding the Sex Pistols in an era of Carry On films, Benny Hill, the establishment protecting Jimmy Saville etc. watching the reenactment of that famous TV interview when they shocked the nation by swearing on TV made me think about how it was John Lydon who openly outed Jimmy Saville in the 70’s on BBC radio only to have the footage cut. Moral outrage was completely displaced then (as it probably still is)!

notaflyingmonkey · 18/06/2022 15:36

I was a punk in the 70s and am enjoying the series so far. The stuff a PP said about the women feels true to me - I can remember seeing Poly Styrene at a ANL gig in London where sporting massive braces on her teeth, she peeled a scarf off her head to reveal cropped hair, and said 'I don't want to be beautiful'. It was truly liberating for me, given all the shit that was in the mainstream at the time about how women should look, etc.

DeusInAbsentia · 18/06/2022 16:20

Must admit, I was very choked by the last episode.
Loved every second of this.
