I also don’t think they’re appropriate comments for a tournament director to make. The problem is that it’s a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy - by always giving men’s matches prominence it reinforces the opinion that it’s the men’s matches that are important, and if it’s always the men’s matches that are on at times convenient for people to watch then it’s inevitable that those matches will get the ratings, again fulfilling the prophecy!
Personally I prefer watching random women’s matches to random men’s matches - and by that I mean that if a player I like is playing then I’ll watch them (male or female) but if the matches being shown don’t feature any of my favourite players then I’ll usually pick a women’s match over a men’s match (where there is a choice).
