Anyone watching The Staircase remake? [Contains spoilers]

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 09/05/2022 00:18

I tried to search for an existing thread but the new AS is shockingly bad so thought I'd start one

Anyone watching this new series of the Netflix documentary? Colin Firth is really badly cast imo, everyone else is great.

It swings from being like a channel 5 Sunday afternoon film to really ,really graphic!

I've watched the first 3 episodes.

No haven't seen it as don't like Colin Firth but did see the original series and it was strange but compelling. He definitely did it as weird how 2 women killed on same stairs. Just started watching Shining Girls which I am loving as like the pace of it and Elizabeth Moss excellent in it.

I've also watched the first three episodes. The story is new to me as I wasn't aware of the netflix documentary.

I actually think Colin Firth is pretty good in it as this rather florid, unattractive, selfish man swinging from grief stricken widower to paranoid poor me from one moment to the next. It's eight episodes though and I wonder how they'll keep up the momentum.

There are loads of twists and turns to come yet!

It's worth looking up you tube clips or the documentary to see what I mean about Peterson's behavior, he was very much directing the show and people around him and that gets lost with Firth.

I saw it advertised on Netflix? The other day. Mentioned it to Dh, as a possible watch, Then realised it was really old.

SilverPeacock · 09/05/2022 08:04

iIt is on my list to watch

Still worth watching. It's a very odd story.

What channel is this on in the UK. I've just googled it and it says HBO.

I was looking for this yesterday. Where are you watching it?

PersilPower · 09/05/2022 08:13

Sorry cross posted, will check the drama series out. Loved the documentary! What were the odds of two women in your life falling down the stairs? 🤔

anchorbuttercakes · 09/05/2022 09:10

I’m really enjoying this and no nothing of the story BUT I cannot get my head around Martha and Margaret’s parentage! Can someone explain?!

I'm not sure I'd be able to follow if I hadn't seen the doc either!

They lived next door to Peterson when he was married to Patty in Germany. They adopted them and when they divorced he and Kathleen brought them up.

There's a pod cast that Kathleen's sister did that is really worth listening to, she goes into great detail and you really get a sense of the whole thing. Can't remember what it was called but can't be hard to find with Google.

He says he DIDN'T have an affair with her but seeing as she ended up at the bottom of the stairs too it's very unlikely that this isn't true.

So I've just been and binged a load of episodes of the documentary. My question is this: why have they bothered making this dramatisation with Colin Firth etc.?

I'm not really sure tbh! Do you agree he's an odd choice to play Peterson? I don't know who I think would be better.

Colin Firth is a most unlikely Peterson. Very odd choice of actor.

I've asked HQ to ammend the title.

I watched the documentary, the last episode made my blood boil - a very key piece of evidence (won’t poop by saying what) was left out until the final episode as was the fact Peterson was saying one of the programme editors. I actually felt quite deceived by it

Martha and Margret's parents were Michael and Patty's 'couple friends' in Germany and then their dad died.

When their mother also died in mysterious circumstances Michael adopted them and they were brought up by him and his new wife Kathleen alongside Michael's sons.

thenightsky · 09/05/2022 21:39

Found this on Youtube... very interesting and I'm now convinced he is guilty.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 09/05/2022 22:11

Oh yes, he was always guilty.

OP posts:
franke · 09/05/2022 23:42

Yes, I'm not sure he's an odd choice, more it's odd that he's playing Peterson to be much more objectionable than he comes across in the doc so far. In the doc he seems detached and a bit naive whereas Firth plays him as manipulative and cantankerous, really unpleasant, ugly. It's strange. I'll keep watching the doc.
