Anyone watching The Staircase remake? [Contains spoilers]

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 09/05/2022 00:18

I tried to search for an existing thread but the new AS is shockingly bad so thought I'd start one

Anyone watching this new series of the Netflix documentary? Colin Firth is really badly cast imo, everyone else is great.

It swings from being like a channel 5 Sunday afternoon film to really ,really graphic!

I've watched the first 3 episodes.

The documentary stuck with me for ages. I've watched one and a half episodes of this dramatisation but not sure what new it's offering? They should have tried something different like showing it from Caitlin's POV or something, weird watching an almost scene by scene dramatisation of the documentary when you know what all the twists will be.

BeyondPurpleTulips · 18/05/2022 15:23

Having now seen ep4, the one thing it has added is MPs relationship with the producer. I wonder if there is going to be more on that, which would differentiate it from a scene-by-scene remake of the documentary?

BOOTS52 · 18/05/2022 20:53

I have now started watching it and saw the first 4 episodes and loving it as it is showing far more details about his sexual bisexual life and his behavior and he is truly a narcissist the way he treats the children and spending the daughter's money also on the legal fees. Colin Firth is actually very good in it and it is way better than the show that he helped direct as there is lots of details that we did not see on that show on this. His poor wife was working herself silly while he was doing sfa. When are the next four episodes out, thanks for the heads up to watch this as compelled me to watch it with my adult son. When the legal team heard another woman died after falling down the stairs we were in fits here as really how could 2 women die the same and not be anything untoward about it. Great thread by the way.

I wonder if they’re going to bring the owl into it? It’s already been alluded to with Kathleen looking up at the trees after hearing a hoot.

crips · 19/05/2022 16:34

Episode 5 is V annoying 🥵

Is it on sky yet, or did you watch it online?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 19/05/2022 17:51

I quite liked episode 5 ,I didn't realise or I had forgotten they left the cartalidge evidence out of the documentary .

If you have Sky the there is a 2 parter called Behind the back Staircase in Sky crime. I've just started watching it. It's an Interview with Peterson.

**it's on the Dateline series, episodes 7 and 8

Watched the latest one, the way the series presented the owl theory now seems very plausible. Don't know what to think now!

I've just watched latest episode too and agree it's a new dimension. I'm really enjoying the series.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 26/05/2022 16:29

I am too now after not so much at the at the beginning. I knew nothing about the affair with the French netflix woman and the bit about wanting the girls spilt up is a whole new level of dysfunctional family!!

I've just started watching the series, but watched the documentary years ago and found it fascinating!

hockeygrass · 09/06/2022 20:38

Has anyone finished the series today? I've just watched episode 8. I really enjoyed the series as a whole but found the time switching around confusing at times. I will watch the documentary next.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 09/06/2022 20:56

Well, after slating it I ended up enjoying it and I think Colin Firth did a good job. I liked seeing all the different theories and it brought to light things I didn't know like the issue with the evidence and that he lied about Kathleen knowing he was gay.

One thing I didn't get was when they were at the Xmas party and Kathleen was in the loo washing her hands, what was the significance of the long look in the mirror at herself, it totally went over my head?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 09/06/2022 20:57

The last 30 second of the episode was fantastic, so well done!!

hockeygrass · 09/06/2022 21:08

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor , I agree re last 30 secs, Colin Firth has been outstanding in the series along with the rest of the cast.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 09/06/2022 22:37

I totally did a 360 , I hated him at the beginning of the series. I have to say I found the time lines really confusing, could've done without the chopping and changing.

I thought Colin Firth was great, and I’m not usually that fussed about him.

The makers of the drama definitely think he’s guilty, which he clearly is.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 09/06/2022 22:55

Cam anyone throw any light on my early question about Kathleen looking in the mirror?

OP posts:
AtrociousCircumstance · 10/06/2022 00:21

Re Kathleen’s mirror look, it felt like an acknowledgment to herself that her giddiness that evening and her relationship itself was a facade to some extent.

Toni Collette was, as usual, brilliant. Such a luminous, nuanced performance.

Ah,that makes sense, thank you. It was the close up of her cleavage that confused me😂

I watched the documentary, the last episode made my blood boil - a very key piece of evidence (won’t poop by saying what) was left out until the final episode as was the fact Peterson was saying one of the programme editors. I actually felt quite deceived by it

Would this be the part when they casually dropped out there was evidence she might have been strangled? I was really annoyed that they had left that out as it was pretty key.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 10/06/2022 09:01

They DID say she was strangled,it was also mentioned by her sister in the victim impact statement,it was also stated in earlier episodes by the coroner.

Interesting that he's never left Durham. He probably gets a kick out of people knowing what he's done/ got away with.

OP posts:
MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 10/06/2022 09:07

The fact he lied about Kathleen knowing he was gay just points even more to her finding out and him attacking her. I wonder what Sophie thinks of it all now?
