Breathless! (And delighted.)

He was outstanding in Sex Education.

He's not 'the first black actor to take in the role' though

NightmareSlashDelightful · 08/05/2022 13:03

Oh cool! He’ll be good I think. They need to get the companions right this time. More Donna and less Dan.

CotswoldWoolly · 08/05/2022 13:04

Brilliant news!

Pemba · 08/05/2022 13:06

Never heard of him, but good luck to him. I wish him all the best. I'll take your word for it that he's good (not got round to watching Sex Education yet).

A good thing to have a person of colour too. Although I did want Lydia West, but two women in a row would be too much to ask for I suppose. And let's hope they start getting some better storylines for the next series.

PortiaFimbriata · 08/05/2022 13:12

Not familiar with this guy's work RTD hasn't picked a bad actor yet, so I'll trust his judgement.

TottersBlankly · 08/05/2022 13:18

Weirdly, because there was so much focus on other ‘School of RTD’ actors - particularly those who were in ‘It’s A Sin’ - I just didn’t think of Ncuti Gatwa as a serious possibility. Despite the fact that I couldn’t take my eyes off him in ‘SE’. Not only because his face is just made for the screen, from every angle, but because he made me feel every single emotion the character experienced. He made everything epic and important and deeply truthful.

Really the BBC, or Bad Wolf, could not have picked anyone better. I can’t wait to retrieve that feeling I had at the start of the reboot - blessed to live in such an age. O frabjous day!

I'm really pleased about this - loved him in Sex Education, and the petty part of me is really ging to enjoy watching a certain section of the population explode with rage.

PowerfulWombSpaceRespector · 08/05/2022 14:14

I'm just pleased it's not Kris Marshall or Olly Alexander.

I like the choice but what will happen to Sex Education? I hope he will still be in it too.

TottersBlankly · 08/05/2022 14:22

I’ve just read an article that says he’ll be reprising his SE role for the next season. (Can’t remember the source - maybe Radio Times.)

debbrianna · 08/05/2022 14:27

You don't say! I didn't see this coming. I am going to love seeing some people explode. 😂

debbrianna · 08/05/2022 14:28

He is in new Barbie movie too. Wow!

SillySallySassySausage · 08/05/2022 14:32

I don't watch Doctor Who, it's not really my thing but absolutely adore Ncuti in Sex Education and I always felt that that would just be just the start for him.

Pyewhacket · 08/05/2022 14:34

Tom Baker was the best Dr Who.

TottersBlankly · 08/05/2022 14:48

Matt Smith …

And Peter Davison is mixed race on his dad's side.

PortiaFimbriata · 08/05/2022 15:02

Matt Smith was amazing. I'm a long-standing Tom Baker fan and DH is Team Peter Davison, but we both believe that Matt Smith is objectively the best casting ever. Counting the days until I can see him as Damon Targaeryen.

If Gatwa is even half as brilliant a pick as Smith or Billie Piper then I'll be delighted.

JustALittleHelpPlease · 08/05/2022 15:03

I'm really looking forward to seeing him, I think he'll be excellent (so long as the writing is up to scratch). I'm a bit cross about the "first black actor" line although they do qualify it with "to play the role full time". 🙄

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 08/05/2022 15:10

Awww yay. Hopefully they can get the companion right and not try to cram a load in. And have the writing back to how it can be rather then all over the place!

MermaidEyes · 08/05/2022 15:14

I'm just ready for something different, gone are the days when we all looked forward to sitting down as a family and watching the latest episode. Let's hope the next season brings back that excitement. My absolute favourites are David Tennant, Matt Smith and Tom Baker, although John Hurt has to get a mention too.

gothereagain · 08/05/2022 15:16

I think he'll be brilliant. I'm really pleased with the selection. Was dreading it being Olly Alexander- I think he's great, but he's not the Dr. I do love Jodie Whittaker though and I'm sad she's going.

SoupDragon · 08/05/2022 15:16

I've never heard of him or seen him in anything but I look forward to seeing his Doctor!

SoupDragon · 08/05/2022 15:17

I would have liked to see Jo Martin play it full time though.

TeenPlusCat · 08/05/2022 15:19

I just hope they give him some decent scripts.

I have stopped watching Dr Who during JW's tenureship, the scripts were just so worthy/preachy. Not what I want from Dr Who.

luciatrope · 08/05/2022 15:26

Don't know this guy but I hope he's good. Interested in seeing what RTD comes up with for the new series.

And Chris Ecclestone was my Doc Smile
