Breathless! (And delighted.)

He was outstanding in Sex Education.

I've never heard of him or seen him in anything but I look forward to seeing his Doctor!

Try and watch ‘Sex Education’. I realise it might not be to everyone’s taste - but it’s very beautiful visually, and he is just gorgeous in it.

And now I’m wondering if this news means the Sex Education writer Laurie Nunn might be one of the Dr Who writers …

I just hope they give him some decent scripts.

yes! Jodie suffered from dreadful scripts I think. She didn't have a chance.

Chiefofstaff · 08/05/2022 19:48

Thank god it’s a bloke again. After literally a lifetime watching Dr Who from the 60s onward I just couldn’t get my head around the character as a woman. Now they need some good writing, some decent assistants that don’t act like wooden blocks and to stop with all the tedious worthiness and go back to its roots. After the last few series that’s an awful lot to wish for but I really hope they can get back to basics. I can see Ncuti as The Doctor. And the teens and 20s will be on board with him. I know it’s not relevant to the role but he is one of the most stunningly beautiful men I’ve ever seen.

ENoeuf · 08/05/2022 19:52

We gave up mid way through Matt Smith when you needed a spreadsheet to follow the plot. Not sure if I can pick it up again as a child of the 70s where the main thing was defeating aliens and being a bit scared with a bit of awareness of the back story!

Chiefofstaff · 08/05/2022 20:07

ENoeuf. I’d so love it if they’d go back to defeating aliens and it being nicely, mildly scary. Some of the plots where characters were their own mother or daughter and you required the brain of a theoretical physicist or quantum mechanic to unravel, literally did my head in. It just shouldn’t be that taxing to try work out. It’s not necessary for it to be so ridiculously convoluted. I don’t think I’m an idiot, but for entire series at a time I literally didn’t have the vaguest clue what was going on. I just want it to be entertaining and understandable.

This was me. I just couldn’t follow the timelines or plot of river song, Rory the soldier? Or centaur? And cracks in walls and Clara being a dalek all along. I had to google and really from when David Tennant turned into an ancient baby and then Matt smith was locked in a tower in his home planet I just gave up.

TottersBlankly · 08/05/2022 21:36

the timelines or plot of river song, Rory the soldier? … And cracks in walls and Clara being a dalek

Is it weird that I adored all of that? Those story arcs made me so, so happy. And my closest small fellow fan loved them too. Made for years of enthralling conversation and speculation - and such a weight of nostalgia when it ended. (Clara immediately ceased to be of use or interest after the brilliant Dalek episode.)

Complex story arcs that make sense are a large part of what I’m longing for in the new era.

I wanted Paterson Joseph. But this guy looks like he will do the job excellently.

Hawkins001 · 08/05/2022 21:38

Anyone know when tourchwood is new series ?

TeamSpike · 08/05/2022 21:47

I am so pleased! And with RTD back at the helm I'm hoping it'll return to its former excellence. Matt Smith is my favourite. I loved all the crazy story arcs and River is just fabulous. Amy and Rory are also my fav companions. Hoping they just go for one companion this time. Gave up on JW series. Def too much preaching and being politically correct for my liking

takingmytimeonmyride · 08/05/2022 22:04

I'm looking forward to seeing what he's like. I was going to say I've never seen him anything but then realised I'd never seen any of the others in anything before they became the Doctor. (Well, apart from Peter Capaldi as Caecilius in Doctor Who)

Donna was my favourite companion. I thought I was going to hate her, but she was amazing.

I didn't like Clara and ended up not watching her episodes with Peter Capaldi as I got fed up of it being the Clara Show.

So more Donna, less Clara for a companion please!

Bubbleteaaaaa · 08/05/2022 22:33

Another Matt Smith fan here, but oh my god this is inspired casting. Ncuti Gatwa is an astonishing actor.

TottersBlankly · 08/05/2022 22:36

Yup!

This made me giggle thinking of the certain people who won't be happy

DOCTOR WHO NEWS!!!
Chiefofstaff · 08/05/2022 22:44

TottersBlankly. Hats off to you for making sense of some of those timelines and complex relationships with River Song and Rori. It went completely over my head and left me utterly baffled.

Dudds · 08/05/2022 22:49

He was one of the best things in Sex Education, brilliant acute with a lot of range and very believable.

I am going to actually start watching again (never like Peter Capaldi in the role and tried JW but again, didn't warm to her as the Doctor).

Dudds · 08/05/2022 22:50

Acute = actor

Chiefofstaff · 09/05/2022 09:05

Did anyone other than me like Peter Capaldi in the role? I absolutely loved him as the Doctor but apart from my DB don’t know anyone else who did. Since Chris Chibnall and Jodie whittaker & co were at the helm, the whole thing lost it’s gravitas, humour and soul for me.. It was like something suited to CBBC. Everything about it felt wrong. Hoping that RTD and Ncuti can rescuscitate it again.

pointythings · 09/05/2022 09:08

I really liked Peter Capaldi, better than Jodie Whittaker - she had some cracking episodes but overall was let down by the scripts and didn't seem to be allowed to have any kind of emotional range.

Overall since 2005 I think Christopher Eccleston was my favourite, shame he only got one season.

WilmaFlintstone1 · 09/05/2022 09:15

Am overjoyed, he was (and is) brilliant in Sex Education.

I can’t wait to see what he brings to this role.

Agree that Jodie has been let down by the scripts. However, when I have rewatched her episodes I have been able to see just how good she is.

I grew up with Tom Baker but having watched everything I can find I have to say I also loved Patrick Troughton in the role.

in modern times I have loved everyone that has been cast.

I adore Peter Capaldi as I have watched him since the early 1980s in various things. Never seen him play a duff character..

Jo Martin is the same, one of those actors who is just brilliant in whatever she does. Loved her turning up in DW.

Discovereads · 09/05/2022 09:15

This might tempt me back to Dr Who. I lost interest when Peter Capaldi took over. Did not like his acting. Then watched a couple episodes with Jodi Whittaker and could not get on board with the woke sermons that they were. I did really like Ncuti Gatwa in Sex Education (watched that with my then 16yr old). Bit shocked to hear he is 29yrs old, he looks very much younger. But he has boundless youthful energy and with him and better writers, hopefully Dr Who will reclaim its original spirit of playful adventure.

she was everything a female Doctor should have been.

Chiefofstaff · 09/05/2022 13:07

Glad there are more Peter Capaldi fans. I thought he was a brilliant Doctor.
