Absolutely love this show, and realise it follows a formula - “we stand by our decision” “ full payment on the nose, thank you” etc
But I’m wondering whether they are told to be so petty or are they unaware of how they are coming across
eg small amount of dust after running their fingers in a drawer, leads to low score and filthy comments
Obviously more examples, does anyone know someone who’s been on the programme ?

I love FIAB too. What makes me laugh is when a couple dismantle the furniture in desperation to find dust, give the host a lower score, then when they (quite naturally) get the same treatment they claim bitterly it's obviously tit for tat (well what did you expect?!). And the winner is often the game player/low payer, so I wouldn't assume a B&B with a FIAB plaque on the wall was any good.

SlipperySlope99 · 10/03/2022 08:53

I also cringe at the £2 overpayment- the owners being thrilled and the givers sitting there all proud, because they feel the service they got was defo worth £2 more 😂😂😂

I remember the very early episodes of this and no-one used to pull back the sheets to check the mattress!! The first time someone did it was like "Wow what did they do??" and now it seems a par for the course check. Some weeks are good but sometimes it seems like comparing apples and oranges - how can a B&B that doesn't offer breakfast be called a B&B? And how can they compare a big green bus experience to a posh house in Weymouth? (or wherever it was!)

Fanacapan · 11/03/2022 16:24

And the ‘pubes’ they always find on the sheets are clearly just fibres! Don’t these people realise how bad they make themselves look?

SouthOfFrance · 11/03/2022 16:27

Yes I agree with comparing totally different types of accommodation on the same week. Eg a yurt in the middle of nowhere paired with a city hotel - going to appeal to different people.

I'd love to know how much the contestants get told to exaggerate too.

What's everyone's favourite b&b?

JauntyJinty · 11/03/2022 16:36

I hate the people that dom't seem to understand how the payment/scoring is supposed to work (which is most of them)

They seem to think it's full payment if everything great and then take oney off for anything wrong - not considering if that's already been taken into account in the price. For example "well our place has full tea and coffee making faciliteis and full sized bath so I'll take some money off 'cos theirs hasn't" Yes - but your place is also twice the price to start with!

Absolutley love the show though,a lwasy gets me riled up!! Grin

prettyteapotsplease · 11/03/2022 16:38

There's an item in The Sun about this which popped up on my phone. Obviously the couples are expressly chosen to encourage 'conflict' - if you say you don't like dogs they'll put you in a group with dog-lovers, etc, etc all in the name of 'entertainment.'

Just as manipulative as the cooking programme where they hide/remove essential ingredients from your cupboards to create a 'panic.'

rubydoobydoo · 11/03/2022 16:39

We stayed at a B&B after seeing it on this! We would have asked the owner but she was a bit scary 😁
It was the one on Northumbria with a herd of resident cats and a pet cemetery.

SouthOfFrance · 11/03/2022 16:39

Yes that's true, or they don't take into account the location or part of the country the B&B is in. Eg a owner from up north thinks a southern hotel is overpriced

pepsirolla · 11/03/2022 16:39

Love it too. I read an interview with a couple who won it. It is actually filmed over two weeks if long distance as stay in another hotel near the next B&B before filming the journey there. They spend ages filming little bits such as ringing the bell, walking into a room etc. The food got cold one evening whilst refilling the meal out and everyone was starving. The only thing they might change is their clothes if not camera friendly or move the furniture if needed for camera crew. They do fill out a questionnaire before asking what things you like or dislike so they suggested if you going on programme don't say you hate Blackpool or vegans for example as you can guarantee you'll be sent to a vegan Blackpool B&B. Don't know why people obviously gameplay as no matter how nice the place looks I wouldn't go there and judging by comments on Google and TripAdvisor seems many people agree

Floralnomad · 11/03/2022 16:41

IMO like most of these types of show it was better in the early days when less people just played up for the camera . One thing that has always annoyed me is when somewhere is lovely but the person says they wouldn’t come again because they don’t like the town it’s in , that’s not really the point is it .

pepsirolla · 11/03/2022 16:42

Refilming not refilling!

SlipperySlope99 · 11/03/2022 16:58

Totally comparing apples with pears on some episodes.
Agree that some don’t get the value for money- was it this week the Blackpool couple said they wouldn’t come back was it because the porridge was too stodgy and the scrambled eggs could have been flavoured with vanilla 😂
Last week was the grumpy man who criticised everyone and wouldn’t stay at anyones again, but then his boiler broke for the stay at his and wasn’t happy with underpayments for no heat nor hot water - bonkers some of them

My favourite is when they complain that someone is clearly trying to win - anyone would think it’s a competition!
There was a brilliant woman on it once who had a fallout with her partner halfway through, but just carried on anyway. She described the issue as a po far 🤣🤣🤣

Fanacapan · 11/03/2022 17:38

What's everyone's favourite b&b?

There was a lovely place on the Isle of Wight years ago with a young chap and his grandmother, can’t remember what it was called but grandmother was a real character, Scandinavian maybe? I always thought I’d like to stay there.
Ibleedibreedibreaatfeed · 11/03/2022 18:37

Are we missing an episode this week? Can't seem to find the Thursdays episode?

AnImposter · 11/03/2022 18:43

Iv one massive bugbear about this show!! Why do they tell them the price beforehand!!! Seriously!! Make them pay what they think it's worth without any clues!! That would make a MUCH more interesting payment day!! Been saying this for years it drives me mad!! Grin

CrustyCrackers · 11/03/2022 19:03

I don't think the idea was originally to compare them, they should be judged on their own merit
A budget B&B isn't going to be serving eggs benedict or free range organic sausages.they should be judged by what they say on the tin

SouthOfFrance · 11/03/2022 23:36

Good point AnImposter. That would be really interesting.

But I'm guessing they'd be way out, even if they wanted to pay the correct amount because unless you have local knowledge of the likely rates you could easily over or under estimate it?

ParkheadParadise · 11/03/2022 23:53

We have stayed in the Lamlash Bay Hotel in Arran for the weekend which was featured in this week's show.
It was lovely and the view was spectacular.

Youcansaythatagainandagain · 12/03/2022 00:01

I love this show.

One memorable episode showed a couple remove the shower plughole and pull it out completely before looking into it and exclaiming it was full of gunk and hair. They reduced their payment because of this loudly declaring that they do this everywhere they go :).

Two separate couples on two different occasions substantially underpaid every other competitor B&B they stayed at because they 'would never spend more than £40 on a room' when they went on a break. Their own B&Bs were both basic and rundown.

vjg13 · 12/03/2022 19:41

Yes, one couple dropped out. No proper explanation, it did ruin it.
Ilikeadrink14 · 02/04/2024 16:25

What I really hate about FIAB are the stupid comments and excuses made when underpaying. That said, I hate it even more when the BandB owner doesn’t like the feedback and states they will take it up with them at payment “they will have some explaining to do’!!” Why? They are entitled to their opinion and I find it very arrogant when an owner assumes the guest is lying! Some of the people on here, both hosts and guests, are unbelievably rude and full of their own importance.
It definitely takes a certain type of person to go on this programme! Not necessarily pleasant ones!

I remember the plug hole one and a couple who had a large and very run down B&B. They visited a really lovely one and offered payment of thirty or so pounds because they would never stay anywhere that charged more. It was really ridiculous but was good tv.

BebbanburgIsMine · 08/04/2024 16:10

My favourite episode was "The Very Famous Bob"

He's from Aberdeen, and he said he couldn't go anywhere without being recognised and people shouting Hi Bob! all the time.

Well, I'm also from Aberdeen, and he's not as famous as he thinks he is, even family who were in the hotel trade had never heard of him 😂
