Katie Price: What Harvey Did Next BBC1 7th March 2022

This documentary followed Katie Price’s son Harvey making the transition to a full time residential college (National Star provides specialist further education and residential services for people with physical and learning disabilities/brain injuries). Harvey has been diagnosed with Septo-optic Dysplasia, as well as autism and Prader-Willi syndrome, which means that he requires constant care.

I don’t usually like to see people’s private moments documented on tv when they may not be able to give informed consent. However, putting the ethics to one side for a moment, I did find this documentary very insightful. I feel like it gave a realistic and quite respectful depiction of Harvey’s issues and the conflicting emotions that parents go through in ‘letting go’ of a child with complex needs. The staff who work at these residential colleges are wonderful at supporting these young adults and no doubt get little recognition for it.

Did anyone else see it and find it insightful?

I thought it was excellent.

I also think it would hopefully have given reassurance to a lot of parents. There are likely many parents out there with children with very complex needs who feel they are the only ones who can and are expected to be there for their children, who are hopefully reassured that these places exist, with professionals who have an understanding of and ability to deal with such complex needs, thus giving those parents hopefully some much needed reassurance.

It must be immensely stressful to have a child with such complex needs and to potentially feel that you and only you are the one who is going to have to manage those needs for perhaps the next 40/50 years. Places like Star college hopefully also remove some of the stress from those parents.

WRT Katie’s drink drive incident, given the timing I don’t think they could not cover it. I don’t rate the woman, but at the end of the day the programme partly featured Katie Price. To have her disappear for a chunk of it would quite likely have shown things in a different light and even created the idea that now that Harvey was at Star, she had simply disappeared from his life.

I really liked the parents of the other girl Lucy, and to the PP who said that they had considered star for their DS who now lives independently, the girl’s parents said that this was something which could be considered for her since she went to star, so while obviously for many their complex needs mean they will never live independently, for other it will give them skills they otherwise wouldn’t have had.

I have always really admired Katie for the way she was with Harvey ... until I saw that she is bringing him to do a PA at a local nightclub to me in April.
Is that in his his best interest or is that a money making exercise? Shameful

purpleme12 · 09/03/2022 08:53

Mmm that is strange

AlternativePerspective · 09/03/2022 09:58

Oh there is absolutely no doubt that she exploits everything about her life for money including Harvey. And she has exploited him for the longest because her other children would all grow up with their own thoughts even if they’d stayed with her, but as it was they all went to live with their fathers.

However I think that Harvey going to star college is absolutely going to be the best thing for him to learn some life skills, but it will IMO also mean that KP will take more and more of a backseat in his life as time goes on, and it wouldn’t surprise me to read in a few years time that Harvey was living in supported accommodation while KP is courting husband number god-knows-how many and serving her umpteenth driving ban from the comfort of the Priory.

Some really unpleasant posts on here. We all have our own opinions on Katie Price, but one thing I don't think can be disputed is her love for Harvey. I really take my hat off to her. No amount of fame or money could compensate for being solely responsible for a child with significant needs from your early twenties. She has raised a lovely young man and should be proud of herself for that.

MrsBerthaRochester · 09/03/2022 15:34

Having Harvey do nightclub appearances is akin to how folk used to pay to laugh at folj like the elephant man at circuses. It is disgusting.

You're kidding me! That's dreadful poor Harvey
BigSandyBalls2015 · 09/03/2022 16:33

People moaning about her exploiting Harvey - have you seen the price of the college he's at? Eye watering and I don't think it is all covered by the Govt.

I do agree the nightclub is a step too far though.

Loopytiles · 09/03/2022 16:33

Given KP’s history of monetising her DC, and the question of her son’s consent, I don’t think it was at all responsible of the BBC, however ‘sensitively handled’ it was. It would have been better to cover similar issues with young adults able to give consent and / or families without history of monetising their DC.

purpleme12 · 09/03/2022 17:04

The programme said it was covered by the local authority/whoever covers these things

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 09/03/2022 17:12

@Clymene

Her children should be taken into care. If she weren't famous they would be. She's an absolute disgrace
Taken from their fathers care? Why would they have their children taken away ? You wouldnt expect a mother to suffer because of the actions of a non resident father would you?
AlternativePerspective · 09/03/2022 17:14

No it was specifically said that his place is funded by the LA.

And she has absolutely set him up on numerous occasions. I remember seeing him on loose women when they were talking about bullying online. Bearing in mind that Harvey had absolutely no need to know what people were saying about him online, and KP asked him (knowing full well how he could respond) what he would say to the bullies, to which he replied “fucking cunts.”

loobylou10 · 09/03/2022 17:56

It is disgusting isn't it. I lost all respect for her when I saw that appearance advertised. Best interests of Harvey?? I don't think so

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 09/03/2022 18:23

Personally I couldn’t watch it simply because to me it smacks of exploitation. Just watching the excerpts made me feel very uneasy.

It is Unless harvey h money himself it will be fully funded.
WomblingWilma · 09/03/2022 18:30

As a parent of a young adult son with ASD and a learning disability and as I am going through the SEND Tribunal process to get DS provision in a residential college, I thought it was very well done but it didn’t focus on how bloody hard it is to get funding for it. That’s the biggest struggle! The college seems amazing. I hope they’ve attached a big piece of foam behind his sofa though, that cushion wasn’t enough. You could see he had a bald spot on the back of his head, not sure if that was from the head banging on a hard surface. That upset me a bit.

I have a real soft spot for Harvey, the program made me cry at his distress, and although it is educational for people without SEND DC to see the real life struggles young people with disabilities and their families go through I hate the way he is paraded on the TV.

When KP had him on TV talking about people trolling him, my blood was boiling, as he should never have known about it or been put in the public eye to attract scumbags like that. I found it unbelievable she didn’t get that!

Of course she is is using him as a platform to keep interest in her. No one wants to see her boobs anymore.

I don’t think she should lauded for loving her son. She hasn’t exactly made his life easy or put him first with her chaotic lifestyle and love life. I understood her mum Mum mainly brought him up until she got ill? She was always pictured gallivanting about so how was she there?

I did wonder if Dwight Yorke had watched him on TV and how he couldn’t want anything to do with him, especially now he’s older. He’s such a funny, sweet young man. I can’t fathom it.

I hope the college don’t allow her to do any more filming. Leave him be now.

WomblingWilma · 09/03/2022 18:34

The college will be fully funded. They said as much. Harvey will also be eligible for benefits like Universal Credit and PIP to pay for personal stuff like clothes. toiletries etc. KP won’t need to pay for anything.

@Ionlydomassiveones she's said it herself on Instagram that SS have been involved (she later deleted it). It's not a secret that the children do not live with her and haven't done for at least two years or more. I don't think she's a good Mum at all.

She does love Harvey but I do think there's a lot of exploitation and many of the decisions she makes for him don't seem to be in his best interests.

BoodleBug51 · 09/03/2022 18:58

Katie confirmed herself in an instagram post that social services had removed her children.

BoodleBug51 · 09/03/2022 19:00

And taking Harvey to a nightclub is honestly indefensible. I'm horrified that the college he's at are letting it happen.

WomblingWilma · 09/03/2022 19:17

Reading about that nightclub appearance, someone needs to get a Deputyship for Harvey urgently so she can’t exploit him anymore.

He was wearing ear defenders when using an electric whisk while baking a cake and he didn’t want to come out of his room to meet new people when he started at the college. Can you imagine him going into a noisy crowded nightclub!

Utterly disgusting.

CallmeHendricks · 09/03/2022 21:23

@Ionlydomassiveones, I'm sorry but you are being naive. Look a little deeper at what she's showing/not showing on SM.

Margot78 · 09/03/2022 23:17

I haven’t met her and it’s hard to get a realistic view of a person through the filter of the press. I have seen her in interviews and often wondered if she is on the spectrum herself but whatever she is struggling with that led to the crash, I hope she is getting support. I suppose the question is whether a documentary that is viewed by many as exploitative can still do some good in creating awareness. I know it is important to consider personal motives when watching something like this but carers and young adults with disabilities rarely have a voice in the media, so I hope that this programme can still be a force for good.
