MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #30): In which we return to Korea from our January Japanese adventures

boatyardblues · 28/01/2022 12:31

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here but our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads.

Shows marked with an asterisk are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others admittedly), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We sometimes resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or favourite actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

No, Rowdythree I haven't finished Goblin yet. I am trying to eke it out a bit because I am enjoying it so much. I had a lovely dream last night about Lee Dong-wook , hoping for Gong Yoo tonight Wink

I am enjoying Nokdu very much, it is quite sweet.

Bea · 10/02/2022 19:34

Awww... Nokdu! One of my faves! 🥰

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 10/02/2022 20:19

I'm struggling with Snowdrop episode 1 for the same reasons as you, Boaty.

The soundtrack is too Disney orchestral, the pace is quite slow compared to a trad K-drama (it would have taken 2 seconds to shimmy up that drainpipe in a normal K!). It feels like a teen movie so far.

boatyardblues · 10/02/2022 20:27

Bear with it. Jung Hae In is worth it, but it is still a shade 반짝 반짝.

If all the Disney kdrama output ends up this noisy and plotted without the usual deftness it will get on my wick.

Same.
boatyardblues · 10/02/2022 21:15

Waaaaah. The open house dance competition, make it stop. Please. It’s like a bad 80s Times Square flash mob. Too much Disney.

Kim Hye Yoon’s character in Snowdrop is a hateful little toad. It’s undone all her good work in Extraordinary You.

This is an interesting article, not at all surprising though.

For the first time I just felt a bit embarrassed watching the Chinese shooting drama in front of DH, it's so bad 🙈Blush

Oh man that's a shame, I like both the lead actors. I haven't got any further than episode 1.
Rowdythree · 11/02/2022 09:44

It's bad, but I can't stop watching, even through the cringey bits! The main leads are cute, I wish they'd stop messing around and become a couple! I'm on episode 10

MusiqueAutomatique · 11/02/2022 13:46

That was an interesting article Rowdy, thank you for sharing it. I wonder how widespread the misogynistic views are amongst the general male population, or is it more of a culture faciliated by the internet?

I found Hellbound to have a sort of Hollywood veneer as well. It just didn't feel the same, one of the reasons I stopped watching it.

I'm binging my way through Coffee Prince because I am able to actually to do so due to work pressures having eased off. I absolutely love it. I'm enjoying Kim Jae wook's long hair too, but as yet he has said about four words. Still, he has another ten episodes to do some acting, so fingers crossed.

polkettle · 11/02/2022 14:38

sidles in with shifty eyes Love and Leashes has dropped and somebody has to watch it so I'm going in. Noble me.

Rowdythree · 11/02/2022 15:00

Go for it Pol, report back! I predict we'll all be watching it by the end of the weekend 😆

boatyardblues · 11/02/2022 15:16

I bookmarked it Pol. 😄

OP posts:
FedUpWithBriiiiick · 11/02/2022 15:33

I will also take one for the team and watch it

polkettle · 11/02/2022 16:47

more shifty eyes I enjoyed it! It's both a cute will they won't they romcom and a (weirdly wholesome) gallop through some quite eyebrow raising fetishes. Probably not one for family film night...

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 11/02/2022 18:05

It was pretty wholesome rom-com at the end of the day. Although I wasn't particularly keen on the "hey just give BDSM a whirl for the person you like - you can train yourself to like it" message.

Rowdythree · 11/02/2022 18:18

I hadn't noticed it was a film! I might have to save that for another weekend. Not sure I want to watch it with teen DD 😱

boatyardblues · 11/02/2022 18:20

This was me at Christmas when DH was giving me side-eye about To Fly with Me.

I'm enjoying Kim Jae wook's long hair too, but as yet he has said about four words.

He doesn’t get many lines, but TBH his hair and the tsundere vibe does all the heavy lifting. Dialogue is optional.

Definitely not the right film for an 18 year old! 😄

Definitely not Briiiiick 😆

Horrors!!! This thread fell off "Threads I'm Watching" cos I haven't posted recently. Bad addict! 😱
I have been enjoying Stranger a lot. I know it's been said before but Bae Doona is ace 🤩
Also this morning Weverse totally emotionally manipulated me into buying Bon Voyage Season 3 ooops!!! I'm restraining myself for the sake of my overdraft to not buy anything else
